Lynne's Corner Updated On Nov 29: Thanksgiving
Lynne's Corner on Britneyspears.com was updated yesteday:

Thanksgiving was, as it always has been, hectic. With Britney on tour, it was even more so. Jamie Lynn, and I came home two days before Thanksgiving to prepare for everyone.

Britney flew in at 3:00 A.M. Thanksgiving day. She slept on the jet, but was still exhausted. Brit slept until thirty minutes before dinner.

The whole family came. We ate until we could eat no more. Our family never changes.

When we finally do get the chance to be together, we are excited and joke around for the first hour. We finally mellow and start talking more seriously about what we are doing or what we are planning. Then we start making plans for Christmas. After we visit, we are so stuffed, we all want to go home to bed. This year Britney and Laura Lynn decided to go mud riding on the four wheelers. The Enquirer or Star magazine would have given a pretty penny for a picture of Brit when she got off that bike -- both the girls had mud from head to foot!

The next day Justin drove down from Memphis for a quick visit. He was there only one day, and had to fly to Florida with Brit to look at a condominium she thinks she might buy. I really liked it, because it is facing the beach and has a perfect floor plan.

I guess I'll have another project for the next few months.

Thanksgiving was nice as usual. Holidays always leave me feeling good yet sad. When it's all over, I still feel like there wasn't enough time to really visit and have quality time together. I always say, "Another year is about over." Then, I have to send Bryan and Britney of to their work again. We're all left feeling a little melancholy.

We, the Spears family, hope all of you readers have a wonderful and safe holiday season.

Britney And Justin: To Wed Or Not To Wed
MuchMusic reported that it turns out in an interview with UK's Smash Hits magazine, *NSYNC's Lance Bass has squashed rumours of the apparent Valentine's Day Britney and Justin wedding. "Oh pul-eese," says Lance in the interview. "They don't ever see each other. No one's getting married anytime soon." Bass' interview follows reports that Britney and Justin apparently told friends to keep February 14th free, hence sparking rumours that the two plan to tie the knot on that day.

Britney On The 10 Essential Pop Albums of 2001

CDNOW.com has compiled The 10 Essential Pop Albums of 2001 and no surprize to Britney Spears Fan's, Britney is on the list with the #9 spot. This should be an honor for Britney who enters her twenty-somethings this Sunday and sales of Britney should get a boost with the soon to be realesd "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Women" single in the U.S. and "Overprotected" single in Europe. Congrats Britney and Happy Birthday!

EW Says Britney's TV Special A Flop
Entertainment Weekly (EW) had an article that discussed TV specials and how most of them are just failures. In the article, they mentioned Britney's HBO special, and said: Thus Madonna and Britney Spears both brought their concert tours into subscribing homes via HBO. Both women would have given the prim Ed Sullivan a heart attack with their wiggly suggestiveness, but on the channel that also brings you ''Sex and the City,'' these gals fit right in. Spears' show was a pretty dodgy spectacle; her apparently-augmented vocal tracks kept dropping in and out of the audio, and as an Elvis fan, I was disappointed that Britney never did don the white late-period-Presley jumpsuit she wore so wittily in print-ads for the show. Read the rest of the article here.

Britney Hails Show Biz Relationship
AP reported that it's not the money or the fame that keep Britney Spears and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake together. It's their crazy schedules. ``I think it is easier dating someone that's in the business because they understand what you're going through,'' Spears told AP Radio. ``You're both always so busy and I don't think someone that was living a normal, ordinary life - you know, 9 to 5 every day - I don't think they would be able to handle being gone so long.'' The pop singer, who turns 20 on Sunday, said that when she and her 20-year-old boyfriend are together, ``we definitely, you know, make the most of it and get really romantic, but that's not very often.'' Fifteen years from now, Spears said, ``I do want to get married and have kids and stuff like that, but my heart will always be with music.''

Britney Signs With ICM For Representation
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Britney Spears has signed with ICM for representation in all areas except music. Additionally, the singer has formed a production company that has yet to be named and is in final negotiations with screenwriter James V. Hart to write a feature film project for her to star in. No details of the project have been disclosed. Spears makes her feature acting debut in the coming-of-age film "Crossroads," which Paramount Pictures/MTV Films is distributing Feb. 15. Her music label, Jive Records, co-financed and produced "Crossroads" with Filmco Enterprises Inc.. Spears' latest album, "Britney," debuted this month at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on 745,750 copies sold, becoming the year's second highest-debuting album. The pop singer's 2000 album "Oops! ... I Did It Again" debuted at No. 1 on 1.3 million units sold, setting a record for first-week sales by a female artist. Spears also is the star of a massive Pepsi advertising campaign launched this year. The singer, who got her start on the Walt Disney Co.'s "The Mickey Mouse Club," will continue to be managed theatrically by Bayonne Entertainment's Rob Lee. Musically, she also is managed by Wright Entertainment's Larry Rudolph and Johnny Wright. Before signing with ICM, Spears was repped theatrically by Endeavor, but the singer and agency mutually parted ways three weeks ago because of what sources said were disagreements about the direction of her motion picture career.

Britney Sets The Date For Wedding
RUMOR: ITV reported that friends of Britney have revealed that Britney is planning to tie the knot on February 14. But details of the romantic ceremony have yet to emerge. Earlier this month, Britney spoke of her feelings for her fiancee. "I love Justin and want to spend the rest of my life with him," she said. "I want to grow old with him. I couldn't ask for a kinder and lovelier boyfriend." The pair, who have been engaged since August, first met as children, when they appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club, a US television show. Earlier this year, they moved into a £3 million mansion in the Hollywood Hills. The 19-year-old pop star is renowned for her vow to preserve her virginity until her wedding night.

Mick Jagger Not Happy With Britney's Satisfaction
WENN reported that MICK JAGGER has put down BRITNEY SPEARS' "childish" rendition of SATISFACTION - and vowed never to duet with her. Jagger and Spears met earlier this year at the MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS, and the ROLLING STONE told her he'd been impressed with her version of his famous song. But behind closed doors the singer admits he wasn't actually keen on her performance. He says, "Britney wears too much makeup and hardly any clothes. Her version of Satisfaction was not bad, but I consider it children's pop. "I would not sing a duet with her. MICHAEL JACKSON can do that."

Britney HBO Special Loses Out To Football
WENN reported that BRITNEY SPEARS' live TV special from Las Vegas on Sunday scored a crushing defeat to American football. A mere 5 million Americans tuned in to watch the HBO cable network's coverage of the pop babe's concert while a whopping 19 million watched the CHICAGO BEARS play the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE game on Fox TV. But the figures for Britney's Vegas extravaganza aren't quite as bad as they might seem, since HBO is a cable network and not all Americans are able to receive it. Nevertheless, by contrast MADONNA's special on the network showcasing her DROWNED WORLD tour hometown show in Detroit in August pulled in an estimated six million viewers.

Britney Bombing In Britan
WENN reported that BRITNEY SPEARS may be top of the charts in her native America - but her popularity in Britain seems to be waning. The STRONGER hitmaker has enjoyed a host of No1 hits in the British Isles since her 1999 debut single BABY ONE MORE TIME, but in recent months, her British fans seems to be losing interest in Britney. The singer's raunchy image and new sound after working with THE NEPTUNES and BT has been met with a weak response from Britney's mostly-teenage devotees. Her new single I'M A SLAVE 4 U only managed to get to number 4 in the British single charts when it was released last month. Last week it emerged her third album BRITNEY sold an amazing 745,750 copies in America in its first week. However over the Atlantic when the album was released two weeks ago fans were in no hurry to snap up a copy. Britney entered the album charts at number 4 and then dropped to a lowly number 20 last week. One reason behind her dwindling sales is the busty blonde's refusal to fly to Britain for promotional activities after the 11 September atrocities, but only time will tell if Britney's popularity with British fans has already passed its peak.

Britney Spears At The Ballagio Hotel
rough transcript from "Extra" segment: Britney blew us away last night, but the concert wasn't the only way she worked it in sin city. On Friday night, sin city was all shook up as Britney danced on water at the famous fountains of the Bellagio hotel. "Extra" got a peek behind the scenes as Spears recorded a wet and wild version of her hit "I’m a Slave 4 U," confirmed to air during the Billboard Music Awards in December. Some 3,000 Britney fanatics packed the strip to watch Britney on a special floating stage, backed up by her flashy dancers and 300-foot fountains. Britney says she wants to be nastier and funkier with her new CD "Britney," and these moves are sure a long way from her days on the Mickey Mouse Club. In fact, on past tours Britney had requested fruit loops and pop tarts in her dressing rooms, but sources tell "Extra" at the Vegas shows the pop star was crazy for coffee drinks. It seems Britney’s all grown up and her fans love her mature new moves.

Check out the video caps of the sneak peak.

Britney Cries For Troops
WENN reported that Britney Spears broke down in tears as she paid tribute to her heroes - the American military fighting the war against terrorism. The She took time out from her Las Vegas concert to express her devastation over the 11 September terrorist attacks. Introducing the crowds to four American military bases via satellite, the pop princess expressed her gratitude to the army personnel fighting in Afghanistan. Wiping away her tears, the singer then dedicated her song NOT A GIRL, BUT NOT YET A WOMAN to her brave countrymen.

note: I didn't notice any tears coming out of Britney's eyes last night but then again I couldn't pay as much attention as I wanted to since I was doing the vidcaps. I did, however, hear obvious trembling in her voice as if she were on the verge of crying. My sister even called at the same moment and asked if I thought Britney was about to cry... I'm sure many of you thought the same thing.

'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' Britney's Favorite Song
AP reported that Britney says her new ballad, 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,' is her favorite song because it captures her state of mind. In the song on her new album, "Britney," she sings of being at an age where she feels she's "caught in the middle." "It's really where I'm at right now," Spears said in Sunday's edition of the Los Angeles Daily News. "Yes, I'm on the verge of being a woman. I need my own identity. I need to grow and do things on my own."

A Britney Interview

Friday, November 16, 2001
Las Vegas Review-Journal
Teen pop superstar explains, you know, what it's like being Britney

A Rolling Stone critic recently wrote of Britney Spears: "Never has a female star courted the preteen and trench-coat crowds so simultaneously and shamelessly." Like, how? Well, she's a 19-year-old self-professed virgin who lives with her boyfriend, 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake, in Destin, Fla. She also ripped most of her clothes off at the MTV Video Music Awards and will again, reportedly, in a movie called "Crossroads," next year. But don't expect the pop singer to talk about the nitty-gritties of her personal romance. One question that many thousands of people want to know the answer to is: If she's a virgin, how does she "work things out" romantically with her live-in boyfriend? "Uh, we can go to the next question," Spears says. She says this on the phone with 40 or so music writers on Oct. 24. The virginity question (asked by this writer) is newsworthy. Spears' nonresponse is reported in major publications around the nation. But since then, Spears has refused to field such questions. During the interview, Spears was in a very pleasant mood. She answered most questions with a friendly, upbeat giggle. She seemed to chew gum for most of the interview, but was definitely munching potato chips later on. Reporters mostly asked her about her sex symbol image.

So what message is she sending to teens?
"Well, I think, it's, you know, first, I'm very flattered that young, you know, such young kids look up to me, because the innocence of them is a really beautiful thing. But I think it's honestly up to their parents to explain to them that I'm a performer, and that when I'm onstage, that's my time to perform and express myself."

Is she changing her music to try to go for more grown-up listeners?
"Really, maybe I should think that deep. But honestly, I think when you grow as a person, you're going to grow as an artist as well. And I just think for this, my third album, I mean, I had to grow creatively. And I couldn't do, like, `... Baby One More Time No. 3,' you know?"

How much does she sense that she's a role model?
"It's very flattering, oh my goodness, that they look up to me. But I just sometimes think it's kind of lame when someone places a label on someone as being a role model. Because when I go onstage, I do my thing and I perform. And that's my time to express myself. But when I come off, I trip and I burp and I fart just like everybody else, ha ha ha."

What does it mean for her to be neither a girl nor a woman, as she sings in "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman"?
"I think my definition of a girl is someone who hasn't experienced her life at the fullest potential yet, very naive, and, you know, she's still growing. And a woman is one who has, you know, fulfilled her life, and she has a lot of wisdom, gained all the wisdom that she needs. And she has, you know, she's just completely lived her life the way she needs to. And she knows herself in and out. And I think that I'm kind of right in-between there. I'm, yes, I think I'm on the verge of being a woman."

Spears is becoming an icon for gay men, a la Madonna. What are her thoughts on that?
"Um, it's flattering. Oh my gosh, all my best friends are all gay guys, ha ha ha. So, no, I think it's very cool, yeah."

Spears is dressed like rhinestone Elvis in TV ads for her HBO special. Is she an Elvis fan?
"Yes, I am a really, really big Elvis fan. And I think the real reason why we did the whole Elvis thing is because, you know, he's from Vegas."

Why did Spears choose Vegas as the location for her HBO concert?
"It was really (because Vegas') energy is amazing, where people are crazy. And every time I perform there, I have my best shows, so it just really made sense for me to be there."

Will she wear snakes onstage, the way she did at the MTV Awards?
"No, there's not going to be any animals on this tour. ... No, yesterday I was doing, going through the run-through, doing all my stuff, and I was, like, `By the time I'm 30, there's not going to be anything left for me to do,' ha ha ha."

Spears' concerts aren't selling as well as they used to. Why?
"You know, I really don't, you know, know the reason why, you know? I just, you know, I just got to go out there and do my thing, and hopefully they'll see the show and just, you know, the people that do come will love it."

Why did she cover the old hit "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" for her new album? She needed a cover song for her upcoming movie, she says.
"And actually, I sing 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' all the time in karaoke ... I love Pat Benatar. She's a rock 'n' roll chick ... and it's a very empowering song."

Actually, Joan Jett sang that song.

"Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm a total dork."

Is she still doing hundreds of sit-ups a day? Not lately, she says.
"No, honestly, when I have an event coming up, I just feel better about myself if I'm really in shape, and honestly, I'm very active. And, you know, I'm, like, the Energizer bunny. People are always telling me to calm down."

Is it frustrating to read bad reviews?
"You know, I'm not really here to, you know, please the critics. I'm here to please my fans, you know?"

The Spears Extravaganza in Las Vegas
Britney Spears headlines her own special, "Britney Spears Live From Las Vegas," Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden. The show which capitalizes on Las Vegas' big-event image. "There's a cachet to Las Vegas," Ray Stallone - HBO's director of sports publicity, says. "If a fight is stamped Las Vegas, it (connotes) a degree of excitement, of championship caliber, of energy." Besides, "Vegas really lends itself" to spectacle "because every time you turn around, the skyline seems to change," adds Randall Gladstein, a producer at Cream Cheese Films, which is producing the Spears special. The live portion of Spears' concert, the second of two weekend shows, doesn't start until 5 p.m. Sunday, prime time for East Coast viewers. (As usual, we Westerners get a live-on-tape telecast at 8 p.m.) But an elaborate opening sequence is scheduled to roll this evening, according to Gladstein. The main titles will feature "a rather elaborate stunt at the MGM Grand, with a number of stunt people" doubling for Spears' dancers, he says. They'll be performing "controlled descents down the giant poster" adorning the MGM Grand exterior, which features Spears in an Elvis Presley get-up.
The sequence also will include some special-effects shots done in Los Angeles, Gladstein notes. Before showtime, camera crews may capture other Vegas views, he says. "That's part of the creative process, something you do at the last minute," Gladstein explains. Most of the show, by contrast, is meticulously planned. "There are elements we have down to a science," he says, "but every show is different." And the Spears extravaganza will include new equipment and new cameras deployed by producer-director Marty Callner, a veteran of previous made-in-Vegas HBO specials, including Bette Midler's Emmy-winning "Diva Las Vegas." A giant 110-foot crane, for example, will be positioned on the upper level of the MGM Grand Garden arena "and sweep down over the arena floor," Gladstein explains. And three remote-controlled rail cameras, similar to the cameras that accompany Olympic sprinters down the track, will follow Spears' moves, one from stage level and two from the ceiling. Satellite links with four military bases (two in California, one in Texas and one in Louisiana) will enable troops to "become part of our audience," Gladstein adds, with Spears reacting to them as they react to her. All in all, about 30 cameras will capture the singer in action. That's about twice the number deployed for Saturday's heavyweight bout, according to Dave Harmon, HBO Sports vice president and senior producer. -- Carol Cling

Britney Says No To Las Vega Visitors Convention Ad
WENN reported that BRITNEY SPEARS has snubbed the Las Vega Visitors Convention by refusing to appear in a TV advert promoting the betting city. The pop princess is due to arrive in Las Vegas on 18 November to perform at an HBO channel TV special at the MGM GRAND hotel and local authorities hoped to persuade her to promote the city during her visit. But the sexy singer turned down their request that she be shot saying "Viva Las Vegas," although she offered no reason for her refusal. Britney seems to be turning her attentions to more moral causes, having requested that the TV special be broadcast for free on AMERICAN FORCES RADIO AND TELEVISION SERVICE, which beams out to American soldiers abroad. She's also pledged to donate $1 from every ticket sold on her current tour to the children who lost a parent in the tragedy of 11 September.

Britney's The Online Event Of The Year
WENN reported that BRITNEY SPEARS' commercial for PEPSI cola has been awarded the online event of the year by a leading American marketing magazine. The pop princess is top of the internet charts after more than two million avid surfers clicked on the advert at PEPSI.COM, according to the ADWEEK publication. A delighted Pepsi believe part of the appeal is the fact the 90-second ad, aired for two hours on the Net at YAHOO before its official TV premiere during the ACADEMY AWARDS in March, was only ever shown on TV in the America four times before going into cinemas during July.

Britney: Building A Mystery
From MTV: Even though it's #1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart, Britney is something of a mystery.

We aren't quite sure what to make of the first-week sales posted by the soon-to-no-longer-be-a-teen's new album. With its #1 chart debut (see "Oops! ... She Did It Again: Britney Spears Tops Albums Chart"), Britney becomes Spears' third straight album to perform that feat, equaling the previous accomplishments of her first LP, ... Baby One More Time, which entered the Billboard 200 at #1 in January 1999, and her second effort, Oops! ... I Did It Again, which landed atop the album charts in May 2000.

But the real puzzler is in the numbers. ... Baby sold some 120,000 copies during its first week in stores to just nudge NSYNC's self-titled album from the top spot, while Oops! moved a monstrous 1.32 million copies straight out of the gate to become the biggest debut by a female artist in the SoundScan era, which began keeping weekly sales records in January 1992. With 745,000 copies sold, Britney's first-week figures are good enough to be the second biggest sales debut by a female artist ever, but the numbers mark a dramatic sales plunge of 43 percent from the history-making first-week heights of Oops!...I Did It Again.

The reasons for such a dip leave us a bit mystified. Was it because of a better lead single for Oops!... I Did It Again (which tapped the title track) than Britney's "I'm a Slave 4 U?" Perhaps. Could it be some fans' fiscal response to Spears' sex-sational vamp makeover? Maybe. Whatever the case, don't blame it on a "sluggish economy" as some have suggested. Despite lingering fears of recession, the 200 albums comprising the new Billboard albums chart combined to sell more than 6.58 million copies last week, up 5.7 percent from this same week last year, when the top 200 albums sold a total of 6.22 million copies and featured the #1 debut of R. Kelly's TP-2.com (with 543,000 copies sold).

While we're not sure what to make of Britney's debut week, we'd like to go ahead and give her credit for some of the icon-like sales figures she's posted during her (gasp) three-year recording career. To date, Spears has SoundScanned a jaw-dropping 8.68 million copies of Oops!...I Did It Again and 10.22 million copies of ...Baby One More Time. Those numbers fare considerably well when stacked against milestone albums by female artists such as Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (6.01 million copies sold), Jewel's Pieces of You (6.95 million), Mariah Carey's Daydream (7.49 million), Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love (9.1 million) and Falling Into You (10.42 million), and Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (11.68 million). In time, Spears' ...Baby debut could even rub sales shoulders with Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (13.86 million copies sold) and Shania Twain's Come on Over (14.06 million).

As a special birthday present for Britney, who turns 20 on December 2, we'd also like to point out how far she has managed to outdistance fellow teen singer Christina Aguilera, whose eponymous 1999 debut has sold some 7.81 million copies, according to SoundScan. And with 19.6 million in career sales to date, Britney has already sold more LPs in just three years than Madonna has done in the last 10, with Mrs. Ritchie tallying just over 19 million in total album sales since January 1992. -- David Basham

Never Too Old To Rock
From WENN: Cher has some words of wisdom for Britney Spears - Remember you're never too old to rock. The 55-year-old BELIEVE pop veteran, who's currently sporting a peroxide wig over her still black tresses, is aware time is beginning to catch up with her, but refuses to become yet another victim of the music industry's obsession with youth. She complains, "Tina Turner and I are the only old girls left in pop. There are other older women, such as Joni Mitchell, but they don't make the charts - that's where you separate the men from the boys." Cher continues, "I was talking to Britney recently and she was telling me that some people were saying that she's too old, at nearly 20, to be a singer! Is she insane? I think Britney will evolve and be around for years." And she could also tell Britney, who turns 20 on December 2, exactly how to stay at the top - never be afraid to re-invent yourself. Cher explains, "Clothes and hair are just accessories. They are like belts, rings or hats. They help make the music more fun for me."

Britney To Buy Mom A Villa in the Caribbean
RUMOR: Britney is buying her mom a holiday home thank you present in the Caribbean. A friend explains, "Britney loves it when she visits St Barts. She calls it a little piece of France in the middle of the Caribbean. "Her mom has always been there for her and Britney decided to say thanks by buying her a luxurious villa." "She's really excited about this and she's sure Lynne will love it."

Britney Hits It One More Time
From E! Online: The teen queen's third release, simply titled Britney, easily bounced Michael Jackson's Invincible from number one on Billboard's album charts, selling more than 745,000 copies for the week ended Sunday, according to SoundScan data.

That gives the 19-year-old diva a perfect track record, with all three of her albums opening in the top slot. She's the first female solo artist to accomplish the feat. Britney's first-week sales are also the highest by a solo act this year and second only to 'N Sync's monster 1.9 million bow in July.

Britney's three-quarter million sales mark is less than the 1.3 million opening week she scored last year with Oops! I Did It Again, but record sales have been down across the board. While 'N Sync has notched the only seven-figure debut in 2001, there were five albums with million-plus first weeks in 2000. Nevertheless, Spears' latest did chalk up the second best first week ever for a female solo artist, behind only Oops! I Did It Again.

More than anything, Spears truly cemented her star power with Britney. Not only did the album outperform huge 2001 bows from Janet Jackson and Destiny's Child, Britney's first-week tally bests the combined total sales of current albums by teen rivals Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore.

Weekly Chart Analysis: week ending Nov. 17
A great week to be a chart watcher AND a Britney fan. -- by Britellectual
"Britney" - Weekly chart track - #1.

Congratulations. Britney Spears' "Britney" debuts atop the BillBoard 200 Album Chart. Her third #1 debut in as many years. The second highest debut by a female act, the second highest debut of 2001 and it strengthens Britney's claim to be the best selling teen performer of all-time. Of course in a few weeks she will no longer be able to add to that crown. Quite impressive for someone who's "15 minutes of fame" keeps on expanding as the years roll by. I guess she must exist in a different space-time continuum. Not bad for a little girl from the backwoods of Louisiana who grew up, not in a powerful showbiz family, but in a home where she was able to both pursue and realize her dreams.

For a variety of reasons I had predicted an 800k debut so 750k is not far off the mark. Critics like to point out the drop in sales between the debut of OIDIA (1.3 million) and "Britney". They seem to feel it is a harbinger of Britney's disappearance from the worlds cultural stage. I disagree. I feel it is a sign of Britney maturing as a performer and establishing a core long-term fan base that will carry her from one success to the next. Keep in mind that if "Britney" sells half of what OIDIA does and if Britney's fourth album sells half of what "Britney" does then she will be selling at the same level as Madonna is currently. Plenty to maintain herself as one of the cultural icons of the new millenium.

What are some of the possible reasons for the decline from OIDIA?

Some blame the economy but I disagree. The music business as a whole has been in decline for quite a bit longer than the recent economic slide. Movies, another entertainment product, seem to be doing quite well and there is no reason similarly priced movie tickets should be selling so much better than CD's. Music sales are down close to 10% this year because the music business is trying to drive away its future customers. First young people, the most Internet connected generation, had to face a music industry totally opposed to the new medium of the Internet. Why would they kowtow to the music industry that slagged one of their favorite mediums. I have a feeling that despite the elimination of Napster, downloading is cutting sales of everyone Britney include.

Plus young people have seen a sustained attack on "teen-pop" by music's cultural establishment. Imagine being a 13 year-old, who a few years ago was turned on to music by acts only a few years older than them such as Britney. After enjoying a peer succeeding at music this young person then was subjected to a steady barrage of criticism calling their musical taste -horrible, juvenile, unsophisticated, subject to corporate mind control etc. - and that they should grow up. They were told that the performers they enjoyed did not count and that they should listen to good music like the rock their boomer parents remembered. Perhaps some of these young music fans, instead of changing musical tastes decided that they preferred to spend their time and entertainment dollars on videogames or Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Just a thought as to why the music industry is down and not the movie business in the same economic conditions.

If the music business is down than clearly pop music is down from its cyclical peak in 1999 were it was around 10% of the music market. Pop declined 20% in 2000 and a similar drop occurred in the first half of 2001. It is a tribute to the fans of core pop acts like Britney, NSYNC and BSB that they have sustained themselves so well in a declining genre. It indicates the real possibility that they have reached a position to ride out the ups and down of the music market.

Looking specifically at the sales decline of "Britney" I also see a possible change in Britney's fans demographics. You can divided Britney fans into three main camps. The biggest being teens, the next biggest being tweens and the smallest (but in absolute terms still huge numbers) her over 20 fans. "Britney" clearly designed to straddle these groups well positioning Britney as a more adult act as she herself grows up. The marketing of "Britney" ignored her tween fans in order to position as an act moving into adulthood in order to sustain her career. The choice of IAS4U as the first single clearly demonstrates this intent. It has not had huge radio airplay but it has had enough radio airplay so that combined with a heavy MTV presence people no it exists and that Britney has a new album. IAS4U dis not, however, get any promotion in the younger market. Radio Disney did not play it, Disney, Nick and Canada's YTV banned the video and almost all the promotion that Britney did was aimed at her older teen and adult market. Except for Fox Family (which occurred after album release) which leads me to believe that now that Britney has established her willingness to grow-up artistically to the general public she can return to promoting herself to the tween market as well. Look for the release of more child friendly material as Xmas approaches with the single "Not a Girl". Expect this to get airplay on Nick, Radio Disney and YTV. This may encourage parents to feel more comfortable buying Britney as a gift. Remember that when parents and grandparents go to the store they may remember buying OIDIA and look at "Britney" as being an easy gift for their child. As well Britney's older fans may feel more comfortable buying her material for themselves around Xmas when they may feel less embarrassed. Britney has legions of closeted adult fans (how else could she have sold 20 million + albums).

Once the Xmas sales season is over the continued success of "Britney"'s drive towards greater and greater multi-platinum status may depend on the success of "Crossroads". Look for a second big marketing push associated with the movie release (SNL, Leno, more magazine covers etc.). The album is also very close to being a soundtrack as well.

One final thought in this section. With time it is clear that SNL was a huge career booster for Britney. It reached an audience broader than MTV and her critically acclaimed performance showcased Britney top the world as a wonderful, talented multi-facetted performer. Hopefully her HBO concert will do the same.
--------------------------------

OIDIA - Weekly chart track - #103 - #114 - #124 - #138 - #140 - #127 - #121 - #124 - #128 - #134 - #150 -#156 - #159 #176 - #140 - #166 - #169 - #184 - #170 - #191 - #185 - #186 - #164.

OIDIA is selling at about half the pace of BOMT around OIDIA's release date so that would indicate that Britney's acquisition of new fans is about half what it was then. Therefore lower sales would go with the fact that she is losing more soft fans than she is gaining fans.

Live and More (video) - #4 -#4 - #5 - #8 -#5 -#6 - #8 - #11 - #8 - #8 -#9 - #8. Expect Britney's new DVD/Video to hit the top of the chart when it is released because her old videos are still selling.

IAS4U moves up to #40 from #49 on the Hot 100. This is partially to do with a bit higher airplay and partially to getting a few positions from the strong sales of the vinyl 12" single. On the CHR/Pop format only IAS4U is at #17 (up from #18).

IAS4U rockets up BillBoard's "Maxi-Single" sales chart from #22 to #8. This is an incredible sales feat for a 12" vinyl single (no maxi-CD single) and even gets IAS4U onto Billboards single sales chart at #73. IAS4U is #2 on the Club Play Heatseekers chart which means it is just below the Top 20 in Club play. I know that IAS4U would get me up and dancing.
------------------------
Canada

"Britney" debuts at #1 in Canada with 44k. In proportion sales are down more in Canada than in the US but Britney has done less promotion in Canada than in the US. For OIDIA Britney had a new MuchMusic special (Planet Britney), she did a press conference in Montreal and and I&I and radio picnic in Toronto. Plus shows like SNL are seeing in Canada while MTV & HBO (where most of her current promotion is done are not seen in Canada). This time all she has done is one press conference and a concert. It is clear that personally appearing is very important in promoting sales. "Britney" debuts high in almost every big music market (#1 Canada, #2 Germany, #4 Britain & Australia, #7 Brazil) which shows she is a global force. But I have no doubt that had she been able to make appearances in person in Brazil, Germany and Britain (as scheduled) she would have done much better. The impact of her Australian trip was severely muted by the 9/11 atrocity.

IAS4U on the Canadian Airplay Chart (all formats) debut #78 - #61 - #63 - #55 - #43 #31 - #30 - #28. On the CHR/Pop format chart only IAS4U is at #15.

IAS4U is #9 in single sales based on the sales of imports alone.

--------------------------------
Billboard Top 200 Albums

No mention needed of number ONE.

Pink Floyd debuts at #2 but clearly they are not the Beatles. An interesting question is will Pink outperform Pink Floyd. We will find out November 27.

MJ has the standard drop of between 45% and 55% for a big debuting album. Look for a possible bump given the strong ratings for his CBS special. Given the chaotic reports from the live shows it shows the benefit of having a good editor.
Enrique stays strong at #4.

Enya, at #5 now has the #3 best seller for the year.

DMX drops to #6 but still sells despite poor airplay.

BSB's greatest hits album drops to #7. This is a better performance than many expected and shows that despite the declaration of the death of pop its core performers like BSB and Britney can survive.

Alicia Keys - #1 - #2 - #1 - #2 - #6 - #2 - #4 -#4 - #3 - #2 -#2- #4 - #7 -#10 - #12 -#13 - #18. Has Alicia Keys reached the point were she will be a Xmas seller. This is act that is so well known, by parents and grand-parents, to be popular with younger people that they will by the CD as a safe gift even if it is not asked for. If Alicia has crossed over to that level of recognition expect it to stay in the Top 20 or even move back into the Top 10.

NSYNC #1 - #2 - #2 - #3 - #5 - #12 -#9 - #16 - #24 -#20 - #17 - #16 - #21 - #24 -#26 - #27. "Celebrity" has a backwards bullet and with strong airplay for "Gone" and Xmas sales season approaching I expect continued sales # increases even if the position does not improve.

DC Xmas album is at #59 behind several other Xmas albums. Is this a pop Xmas album "to far".

Michelle Branch moves #64 to #74 to #94 to #90. Strong airplay and TRL recognition has not led to big sales. My recommendation. Follow in the footsteps of Britney, Christina and Alicia and start wearing belly-shirts.

My second favorite album of the year, "O Brother Where Art Thou", gets a big boost from the CMA's and jumps from #30 to #16.

Britney Spears appears 5 times on the BillBoard 200 Album Chart - "Britney", OIDIA, NOW Xmas, NOW 7 and NOW 6.
--------------------------------------------
Hot 100

No new songs in the Top 10. Is there a more boring chart in the world. Maybe next week NSYNC will shake things up in the Top 10. They are currently #11 and "Gone" is clearly a much better song than "Pop"

---------------------------------

Last year OIDIA was the second best debut of the year when it was released. the following week it was bumped down to #3 by Eminem and only spent one week at #1 (although now OIDIA has out-sold Eminem by several hundred thousand). Will history repeat itself. Garth Brook's first day numbers show a debut of 600k but his TV special last night may boost it up past "Britney's" debut. MJ will also benefit from his TV special. I am quite interested in seeing the debut numbers of Shakira and Jewel (who has a solid album coming out).

Look for "Britney" to drop the traditional 45% to 55% (NSYNC's "Celebrity" fell over 75%). I expect a boost the third week from the HBO Special and Thanksgiving.

Britney Tops Albums Chart
MTV reported that she did it yet again. The same thing keeps happening to pop princess Britney Spears — whenever she releases an album, it debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Spears' Britney sold more than 745,000 copies its first week in stores, garnering her the top slot on next week's chart, as well as the honor of having the second biggest debut of the year — behind 'NSYNC's Celebrity, which moved 1.2 million copies in its first week — according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (November 14). Britney is, however, the year's most successful debut by a female or females, trumping Destiny's Child's Survivor (663,000 copies in its first week) and Janet Jackson's All for You (605,000). Spears now holds the #1 and #2 slots for the biggest first-week sales by a female artist, with last year's Oops! ... I Did It Again, which moved 1.3 million units its first week, and Britney, respectively. Her debut LP, ... Baby One More Time, also arrived atop all others when it was released in early 1999. The pop singer crushed the rest of the chart competition, outselling next week's #2 album, the debut of Pink Floyd's Echoes - The Best of Pink Floyd, by more than 500,000.

Britney At #4 On The Official UK Album Chart
Ananova reported that chart experts say they're not surprised Britney Spears has been eclipsed by oldies Pink Floyd and Sting. Her new album only made it to number four in the new Official UK Album Chart. Steps top the chart with their greatest hits collection Gold. Pink Floyd's Best of album Echoes is at number two, and Sting's collection All This Time is at three. But Britney did beat off the challenge of Michael Jackson, who is at number five with Invincible. HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said Britney had kept a relatively low profile in the UK for the album release. He said the Pink Floyd collection was seen by many as this year's equivalent to The Beatles' singles album last year. And Sting had been boosted by the publicity generated by flying on Concorde last week. The full chart countdown is on Radio 2 tonight from 7pm.

Britney Clothing Are Up For Grabs
SonicNet reported that Britney Spears, Beyoncé Knowles and Pink are among the celebrities whose wearable wares are up for grabs in an online clothing and memorabilia auction benefiting September 11 relief organizations. Outfits worn by those singers — along with others worn by Sheryl Crow, Gloria Estefan, Shania Twain, Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks — will be on the auction block for two weeks beginning Sunday (November 11) at GloryAuction.com. Designer Betsey Johnson donated a velvet coat with faux fur collar and cuffs that Spears wore to a Madonna concert earlier this year, while designer Badgley Mischka donated the crystal-beaded beige lace gown Spears wore to the 2000 American Music Awards. Bidders will also have a chance at the Diane von Furstenberg dress worn by Destiny's Child's Knowles on a recent cover of Vanity Fair magazine. Pink donated the orange crocheted top and pink bra she wore in the video for her new single, "Get the Party Started," along with an outfit she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in September. Crow is offering the leather pants she wore in the video for Stevie Nicks' "Sorcerer." Each outfit was donated by either the celebrity who wore it or the person who designed it, and each winning bidder will receive a photo of the celebrity wearing the outfit at an award show, premiere, video shoot or similar event. Most of the participants in the auction, which closes at midnight on November 24, are actresses, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Katie Holmes, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz and Charlize Theron. John Travolta and Adam Sandler are among the actors who donated items. Members of the New York Yankees, Mets, Knicks and Giants, including Mike Piazza and Latrell Sprewell, offered up autographed jerseys and caps. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Liberty Partnership Charity of each donor's choice, according to organizers.

Britney Will Be Back In Australia In March
The Daily Telegraph reported that Britney Spears will return to Australia in March to launch her film debut. Crossroads, which also features comedian Dan Ackroyd and Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall, tells the story of three high-school girls who go on a road trip to compete in a musical talent quest. Spears, who plays straight-A student Lucy, has been hailed for her performance by the film's cast. They have downplayed reports the film was just a vanity project for the teen pop phenomenon, who commissioned the script, director and cast. "She is a good actress. I mean, she's got the essence of greatness," Ackroyd said. The 19-year-old singer is also enjoying rave reviews for her United States tour, which opened in Columbus, Ohio, last week. But most of the reviews centred on her racy costume changes, which some said were too sexy for the predominantly teen audience. Like her idol Madonna, Spears presented several different looks.

'Britney' Will Be A Lukewarm Success
Billboard.com reported that Britney Spears' "Britney", released Tuesday in the U.S., is posting impressive numbers and is expected to debut at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200, but retailers aren't exactly celebrating, Billboard Bulletin reports. Spears' set is expected to sell more than 600,000 units-far from a lukewarm success but considerably less than the million-plus the teen queen mustered in first-week sales of last year's "Oops! ... I Did It Again." "It's selling worse than Britney usually does, but far from bad," says Mike Camacho, GM of Chicago's Tower Records store on Clark Street. "It did excellent Monday night and Tuesday, but then it tailed off ... It will be well below the usual numbers for those types of artists."

Britney Spears Performs Military Service
Another good reason to join the military: Britney Spears has requested that her live HBO concert on Nov. 18 air simultaneously on armed forces radio and TV without charge. ``Britney Spears: Live From Las Vegas,'' which will emanate from the MGM Grand, will be carried by the American Forces Radio & Television Service (AFRTS) on its AFN-Atlantic and AFN-Pacific channels. Throughout the show, Spears will interact via satellite with people at four military bases: the Marines' Camp Pendleton and San Diego Naval Station, both in California, the Army's Fort Polk in Louisiana and Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. AFRTS reaches 800,000 U.S. military personnel and their families in 175 countries and territories, as well as sailors and Marines aboard U.S. ships at sea.

Can She Do It Again?

source: NEWSDAY (Long Island)
Can She Do It Again?
Britney’s talent clock may be winding down
By Glenn Gamboa

November 8, 2001

THE CURRENT Britney Spears spectacular concludes with her suspended in midair, after her troupe of eight metallic-underwear-clad dancers pushes her out of the metal gondola that ferried them over the mammoth stage. This move saves her from another trip through the makeshift rainstorm, complete with a drenching downpour and fireworks display onstage.

It's a lot of trouble to go through to distract from the fact that Spears is singing a new techno version of "Baby One More Time” slightly off-key and maybe even off-tempo, though it's hard to tell, considering all the timing changes. Music is hardly the point of the "Dream Within a Dream” tour, where no expense is spared in creating stylish scenarios for Spears to shimmy through in a variety of skimpy outfits.

Spears currently sits atop the pop world, and her 75-minute concert shows off the kind of good-time extravagance that brings. But the almost-20-year-old knows she is at a crossroads. No, not this "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” nonsense the obviously-a-woman has been pushing to promote her new "Britney” CD.

Spears must soon decide whether to push to become an actual artist -- like her heroes Madonna and Janet Jackson -- or remain a perfectly produced performer, an actress playing a singer, who eventually will run out of tricks like a 21st-century Paula Abdul. (Doesn't the "I'm a Slave 4 U” video resemble Abdul's "Cold Hearted Snake” clip?)

"I take a lot of flak from people for what I wear or what I say,” Spears said, introducing "Not a Girl ... ” as her next single. "I'm not a little girl anymore. I have a lot to learn, a lot to experience. But I'm doing exactly what I want to do.” Judging from the show, which focused on new songs from "Britney,” that means paying as much attention to costume changes and choreography as the actual music.

Some, like the light-hearted Janet-Jacksonesque "Anticipating” (fuchsia beret, turquoise skin-tight top, patchwork skirt), show a vastly improved Spears simply enjoying the irresistibly fun beat. Others, like the 'N Syncish "Lonely” (silver skin-tight top, lime green hip-huggers), were oddly conceived, as she danced with an image of herself on a video screen. The Princeish "Boys” (white halter top, skin-tight jeans) and the current single "I'm a Slave 4 U” (green bikini top, super-short green hot pants) show her moving in an edgier, dance-oriented direction that she might not be quite ready for.

Unlike so many of her cohorts, Spears, with her intense work ethic and drive to perform, is lucky enough to get some time to shape her new image. The clock, however, is now running.

Openers O-Town, the nicest bunch of overachievers around, kicked things off with a safe, pleasant collection of songs from its debut, including a powerhouse version of the ballad "All or Nothing” and the reggae-lite groove of "We Fit Together.”

Exchanging Her Halo for a Cloak of Darkness
There is a review of Britney's concert but Ann Power in the NEW YORK TIMES.

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Nov. 7 — If the shock-rocker Alice Cooper hadn't claimed the title before she was born, Britney Spears could have called her latest tour "Welcome to My Nightmare." The show she took to Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday night, which was actually titled "Dream Within a Dream," is dazzling. But its concept is darker than you'd expect — or perhaps just dark enough to illuminate the commotion America's latest sweetheart generates.

Conceived in league with her 18- year-old choreographer, Wade J. Robson, the performance inevitably played on the tension generated by Ms. Spears's persona as an innocent provocateur. Since she is now nearly 20 and promoting an album, "Britney" (Jive), that stresses her coming of age, she smartly did not play too much of a Lolita.

Ms. Spears was more vampire slayer than coquette. She emerged first all in black, clinging to a rotating disc like a sideshow performer waiting for knives to be hurled at her head. Later she breezed past her ominously seductive male dancers during "Boys"; did flips while suspended from two bungee cords at the conclusion of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"; and was decidedly virile in her solo song-and-dance turns. Those displays of strength nearly always led to moments of being menaced. Once she even threatened herself: when her mirror image popped up on a screen, Ms. Spears shouted, "She wants to battle me," and danced it into oblivion.

The show's action-movie tempo was justified by its focus on dreams, which often disturb. The clever device of merging video clips with live sequences added to the hallucinatory mood. Yet the dream theme also allowed Ms. Spears to emphasize the upsetting emotions beneath her supposedly vapid music.

The show made you realize that the words most frequently used in her songs are "lonely" and "confused." There were sunny moments, but they were less compelling than the ones in which Ms. Spears tapped into her well of fury.
This artist's sullen side was obvious from her early notoriety as the bad good girl singing, "Hit me baby one more time." She has remained fascinating because she and her team of conceptualizers continue to hint at the violence and oppressiveness wrapped up in her power as an ingénue.

Forcefully displayed sexuality may be the key to this Pandora's box, but it's not the only element. In fact, despite frequent near-nakedness, Ms. Spears didn't come off as very sexual.

Her oddly neutered presence partly served her audience, which included many, many children with watchful parents nearby. Intentionally or not, it also made room for other layers of meaning. In this show, not just sex chased Ms. Spears, but also celebrity and ultimately happiness itself — the burden of representing American ascendancy in an age of doubt.

This dream extravaganza perhaps unwittingly suggested that the Britney we know is herself a dream, an artist whose genius is not for singing — indeed, this performance did not suffer at all from the music's being its least important element — but for teasing out the cravings and fears that haunt the modern world. Ms. Spears now wants to awaken to an adult persona, but she may find that the netherworld of desire is her natural home.

She's A Lucky Girl!
From ETOnline: Millions of adoring fans, mega platinum albums, and dreamy beau JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE. Who could ask for anything more? BRITNEY JEAN SPEARS certainly can ... and she is!

The gyrating genie is slated to cross from the pop world into her first starring role in the upcoming flick, 'Crossroads,' due in theatres early next year. In the meantime, the 19-year-old sensation is gearing up baby, one more time, for another sure-to-be-a-hit album!

On November 6th, the princess of pop did it again with Britney, the third studio release from the former mouseketeer. And the album's steamy, offbeat single "Slave 4 You" is certainly convincing proof that Britney's not that innocent.

"I know I may be young but I've got feelings too/And I need to do what I feel like doing/So let me go and just listen," sings the artist with all the breathy seduction of PRINCE protégés VANITY or SHEILA E.

While the Britney camp left the hit single's penning and production duties in the capable hands of THE NEPTUNES, a little nepotism pays off on the cut, "What It's Like To Be Me." Co-written by the equally capable Justin Timberlake, Britney's audacity is in full swing as she lays her cards on the table among the tune's stuttering beats.

And howzabout a little headbanging! The soon-to-be 20-year-old even tackles the leather-n-lace JOAN JETT classic, "I Love Rock 'n Roll," adding some turntable scratches to its hooky guitar and trashy vocal brawn.

In fact, Britney decided to steer the ship in a whole different direction this time around, recruiting new writers and producers to spread a different flavored icing on the cake. Co-written by DIDO, the cut "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" is a soaring ballad which Britney tackles with somewhat raspy finesse as it embodies the young pop diva's newfound dilemma.

The slightly Latino cha-cha beats of "Let Me Be" finds the Louisiana native walking her own path of trial and error while pleading, "trust in my instincts, trust that I know what's right." The semi-frustrations of "Overprotected" -- one of five tracks on the album penned by Britney herself -- continue to boldly defend the artist's transition into womanhood.

So which is she, anyway? Girl or a woman? "I guess it depends on what your definition of a girl and a woman is," Britney tells CDnow. "My definition of a girl is someone who hasn't experienced her life to the fullest potential yet, and she's very naïve. A woman is one who has fulfilled her life, gained all the wisdom she needs, completely lived her life and knows herself in and out. I think I'm kind of in between there."

In other words, Britney lies somewhere between pop tarts and pop diva, all wrapped up in her skimpy fixin's. Nevertheless, girl or woman, one thing is for sure. Britney Spears is one lucky, er, person living a very charmed life.

The artist's North American tour in support of her latest opus is already underway. The energetic jaunt is slated to crisscross the continent before wrapping up on December 21st in Washington D.C. For those who cannot make the gigs, Britney's HBO special "Live From Vegas" airs on November 18th! Don't miss out!

Denver Post Article
Spears - interviewed via a satellite linkup from Toronto to the Channel 9 newsroom - was fidgety during her conversation with 9NEWS entertainment reporter Kirk Montgomery. She seemed more like a typical 19-year-old than what Entertainment Weekly this week describes as a "teenage sex kitten" on a cover that features a shirtless Spears in a jeans jacket open to the waist. In her soft Louisiana twang, Spears talked about her new CD, which she has described as "nastier and funkier" than her earlier records. "It's really a reflection of me . . . and what I've been going through," she said. "It's a very personal record, and I wrote five songs on it. So hopefully people will hear it and just see that I put my heart out there." She says she finds songwriting to be "a simple process, but it's hard to do a hit song, put it that way. . . . I was really fortunate that I got to work with amazing producers who were just very talented and fun to be in the studio with. . . . You have to have a good vibe with the people you're working with. . . . It was a lot of fun; I loved it." One of the most fun parts, Spears says, was getting to collaborate on a tune with her main squeeze, Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync. "It was nice," she recalled, dreamy eyed. "I was a little nervous at first because I'm not used to working with . . . " She grappled for the word, then giggled. " . . . my boyfriend! So it was a little awkward at first, but once we got into the flow of things it was very cool." If the songs get salty at times on "Britney," at least in comparison with the puppy-love tunes on her earlier records, it's only because she was true to her muse. "The writing process for me was very therapeutic. I took some frustrations out on a song, and if I had the feelings to do that, I thought it was tastefully done and appropriate for where I was at that time." And as far as her increasingly randy image in videos, Spears hopes, as the Doors once sang, the little girls understand. "You know, when I was younger and I had my (dance) recitals, I would put on my little makeup and my tutu and my tap shoes and I would go out onstage and perform," she said. "And that's what I'm doing when I'm doing a video. "I'm not wearing that (sexy outfit) to the supermarket - No!" she added, making a "Duh!" face. "Seriously, I think parents should really explain that to their kids. And I think it's a beautiful thing for kids to be able to go into their parents' closet and put on mom's high-heel shoes and have that dream fantasyland to escape (to). I think that is so beautiful, you know? "I just think," she said, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "they should explain that to their kids." Now, on top of the pressure she feels to succeed with her new tour, her new CD, her new special and her new movie, there's Vogue magazine, which just proclaimed Spears "Madonna's heir apparent" on its cover. "I think it's very flattering that they'd compare me to her," she said. "I think I have my own thing, my own identity, you know. I want to make sure of that. But at the same time, for them to compare me to her as far as the way my career's going, I think that's flattering." read the entire article by clicking here!

Britney Steps Into Maturity
From USA Today: What a shock. No navel on view! Yes, Britney Spears said at her Britney CD launch party Tuesday. ''I wanted to wear a dress, so no belly.''

The dress was a creamy ruffled slip thing, no sign of bare midriff, paired with her favorite vintage cowboy boots. Maybe her bejeweled bellybutton is getting enough exposure at her concerts and on MTV's Britney weekend. After all, it has the Nov. 18 HBO Las Vegas special at which to shine.

Spears, covered up in a long Dolce & Gabbana coat, arrived at Centro-Fly with boyfriend Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync. With her mother, sister Jamie Lynn, 12, and brother Bryan, 24, on hand, the dark depths of the club became a family party as the whole group did some dancing.

Asked what's sexiest in her video, I'm a Slave 4 U, Brit said, ''Oh, probably the dancing . . . the whole mood of it, definitely, how it's really sweaty, and kind of dark. It sucks you in.''

Timberlake co-wrote a song on the CD with choreographer Wade Robson. Justin said, ''We just wanted to give her a little bit of punk and a little bit of hip-hop in the same song and to give it a little play on words. It's called What It's Like to Be Me, so immediately when you see that, it's like, ooh, I bet it's one of those leave-me-alones by Michael Jackson or something. It's not. She's talking to a guy, saying if he wants to be her man, he's got to understand what it's like to be her.''

Britney may not yet be a woman, as she sings, but she'll say goodbye to girlhood Dec. 2, her 20th birthday. Her birthday wish? ''Really just to be with my family, my little sister, to have a normal day, eat barbecue, do whatever.''

Justin, in a vintage leather jacket and Western shirt, has a birthday surprise lined up: ''I'm not going to tell you! I can't give it away!''

Also partying: the group O-Town, on the road with Spears through December. And hunky Anson Mount, who co-stars in Spears' movie, Crossroads, due in February. He says she's ''a 19-year-old girl from Louisiana. She doesn't try to be anyone else, and I appreciate that.''

Weekly Chart Analysis: week ending Nov. 10
First Britney

OIDIA - Weekly chart track - #103 - #114 - #124 - #138 - #140 - #127 - #121 - #124 - #128 - #134 - #150 -#156 - #159 #176 - #140 - #166 - #169 - #184 - #170 - #191 - #185 - #186

OIDIA only 3 albums on the BillBoard 200 have been on longer and they all have sold lower amounts.

Live and More (video) - #4 -#4 - #5 - #8 -#5 -#6 - #8 - #11 - #8 - #8 -#9.

IAS4U inches up to #49. On the CHR/Pop format only IAS4U is at #19 (up from #20).
IAS4U debuts on BillBoard's "Maxi-Single" sales chart at #22. It and J-Lo's "I'm Real" are the only vinyl only songs on the list.

IAS4U on the Canadian Airplay Chart (all formats) debut #78 - #61 - #63 - #55 - #43 #31 - #30. On the CHR/Pop format chart only IAS4U is at #17.

BillBoard reports that "Britney" is set to sell upwards of 700,000 units this week. My prediction of 800k is still possible depending on weekend sales. "Britney" stands a good chance of being the second highest debut of the year after "Celebrity" (last year OIDIA was the #4 debut). Of last years big debuting acts (NSYNC, Britney, Eminem, BSB and Limp Bizkit) Britney had the best legs ( in more ways than one). A smaller percentage of OIDIA's sales came in the first week as the album had better long-term sales strength. Hopefully that situation will continue.

Why the possible drop from last year?
1)The economy is in a recession.
2)"Britney"'s more mature sound and Britney's more adult image may have turned-off some of her younger fans or at least their parents.
3)Britney's "tween" fans, who do not have their own control of spending may have to wait for their parents to buy the album as an Xmas present. This means that her opening week's sales may have come mainly from her older teen and twenties core fan base.
4)Britney has become an established performer with a core fanbase and those who liked her as the hot new act may have moved on to other acts.

Regardless, Britney has proved herself a core pop performer with a solid long-term fanbase willing to stand by her through a transitional album. MTV obviously considers Britney a core performer for their target audience given the coverage they have given her. I guess their research still shows she generates ratings. As for radio, they may want to ignore Britney and hope she will go away but they may be in for a long wait. IAS4U is slowing growing and in many stations has shown stability as a medium rotation song (but the reason it never "blew-up" at radio is that it was a high rotation song on only a few stations).
--------------------------------
Billboard Top 200 Albums

MJ has a good debut at #1 with 366k. Obviously he still has a few fans. I wonder what his drop will be and how the album performs over the long-term because in the past his albums have been slow-burners.

Enrique debuts with a good #2 and in this case it is clear the radio success of "Hero" propelled this album.

DMX drops to #3 with a "good" decline of only 50%. Despite bad radio airplay he still has fans that radio clearly ignores.

BSB's greatest hits album debuts at #4. This clearly was an attempt by Jive to fill a lull (and help its profits) in BSB sales with a quicky GH's album when they should have waited at least one more album to do so. Very little promotional money seems to have been spent on it so it will be almost pure profit from the get-go. But Canada loves BSB as they debut at #1 with over 40k (the US equivilant would be 400k). BSB, Canada's favorite boy-band.

Please notice that last weeks #1, this weeks #2 and next weeks #1 (Britney) all had relatively poor radio airplay. So the question is, does radio matter.

Lenny Kravitz #12 debut is surprisingly low. It seemed hurt by a lack of promotion.

Alicia Keys - #1 - #2 - #1 - #2 - #6 - #2 - #4 -#4 - #3 - #2 -#2- #4 - #7 -#10 - #12 -#13. After a few months in the Top 10 she finally falls out.

NSYNC #1 - #2 - #2 - #3 - #5 - #12 -#9 - #16 - #24 -#20 - #17 - #16 - #21 - #24 -#26.

Are we DC (Beyonce) saturated as their Xmas album debuts at #66 behind 4 other Xmas albums.

Michelle Branch drops from #64 to #74 to #94. Pop-rocks great female hope does not appear to have broken through yet even with a strong first single. She may come back if her second single proves attractive.

Next week of course big "Britney" dominates the charts followed by another exercise in baby-boomer nostalgia with Pink Floyd.
--------------------------------------------
Hot 100

Same-old same-old with Nickelback replacing Staind as the token rock song in the top ten.

Justin Timberlake - Hopeless Romantic
On the December issue of Glamour (UK) Britney has revealed that her boyfriend Justin Timberlake is so romantic that it makes her embarrassed. And despite her sexy image she still claims to be a virgin. She also said that despite constant rumours, they are not engaged and living together. Though she does say that she would love to marry and have children with him at some point. Britney says: "There aren't really the words to describe how you feel when you are in love with someone. It was always there. "He's very romantic - to the point where I get really embarrassed," she tells the December edition of Glamour magazine. "I love him being romantic, but I'm really shy. I can't be romantic because I don't know what to do. We'll be somewhere and the music will be playing and, in front of everyone, he'll get up and ask me to dance. "Or he'll invite me up to the hotel room and there'll be flower petals leading from the elevator to the living room, with a package of goodies, like lotions and candles, stuff I'm totally in love with. I'm definitely a candle girl." In the interview, Britney stresses that she still believes in no sex before marriage, calling it "a good thing". She says: "You know, when the time is right, the time is right. "I really feel weird when I'm called a sex symbol," she adds. "I'm a little nervous of older male fans. And when I look in the mirror and try to look sexy, I just make myself laugh." Reports of her engagement to Timberlake began in August when she posed for photographs at a basketball game wearing a diamond ring. She has since said it was a gift from her brother. Britney, as well as maintaining she remains a virgin, also claims not to have a rebellious bone in her body. "During my European tour I probably went out four times in a matter of seven weeks. I'd rather stay in and watch a movie." She says about her home in Los Angeles: "The bathroom is spectacular. We have the most beautiful paintings up and there are windows throughout the whole room. "There are a lot of flowers and beautiful lamps. I love how big it is. And it's marbled. I'm a bathroom girl and I love it."

The Concert Was AMAZING!!
The concert was is one word...amazing! Because I am not a great writer, and also because I don't want to ruin the surprises that Britney has in store for everyone who is going to see her perform this winter, I am not going to put up a full blown review on the news page (if you want, you can read a review of the concert here).

Basically, the concert was alot of fun! The sets, the costumes, the dancing, the whole show was so cool, almost like a broadway production but bigger! I could not sit down once during the whole show, all I did was sing and dance the whole night. It was just a fun and entertaining night! Only thing I was disappointed was with the show ending as early as it did, I wanted more ;)

Britney Aiming For More Film Roles
Ananova reported that Britney Spears says she is hoping to land more film roles. She says she would "love to do more acting." Britney makes her movie debut in the forthcoming film Crossroads. She told www.canoe.ca: "Making the movie, honestly, was probably one of the things I'm most proud of that I've done so far. "The movie is really heartfelt, it's just a chick movie. You want to just watch it with your girlfriends." One scene from the film shows Britney and her girlfriends singing along to NSync's Bye Bye Bye in a car, but the male driver refuses to join in. According to Britney her boyfriend, NSync's Justin Timberlake, was less than amused by the scene. She said: "He was like, 'Ew, why did you do that?' I was like 'Why?' He goes 'All the nerds liked my song. The cool guy didn't like it." Crossroads opens in the US next February and in the UK the following month.

Here is a few hints for you to be able to spot me, I am going to be sitting in section 12F (which is floor seats) and going to be wearing blue jeans, a blue tommy hilfiger jacket and a white/blue shirt. So keep on eye out for me, and hopefully I will get to meet some britneyspears.org fans!

HITS One-Day Sales Projections
According to HITS Daily Double "Britney" is likely to sell around 700k units for the debut week. This is lower than my projection of 800k but still it will be the second or third best debut of the year (last year she had the third best debut).

My feelings are that the album may not have sold as well with her younger fans as OIDIA. But perhaps some of those younger fans (without their own money to spend) will be getting it as an Xmas gift rather than getting it right away.

Look for "haters" to say this is the first sign of Britney's disappearence and more objective types to say this is a decent number for a transitional album in a weak economy. -- Britellectual

Britney's Triumph!
A Review:

Britney Spears
"Britney"
Jive/Zomba
Håkon Moslet from Dagbladet (Norway)
Rating (dice): 5

Britney's triumph!
Britney Spears is undoubtedly a commercial product. And her third album "Britney", is undoubtedly a great pop album.

I never thought I'd write these words, but there's no denying it: The new Britney Spears
album is absolutely, completely RIGHT ON!

While this "child"'s first two albums were musically fairly thin, based around each own
supersingle and not much else, "Britney" is a great album. Plain and simple.

This is genuine pop with an abundance of hits the world is gonna love.

"Britney"'s success is a result of producers and management not forgetting who they're dealing with: a quick stepped pop babe who shouldn't and can't be aquintened with artistic ambitions.

The first single "I'm A Slave 4 U" is an unsuccessful attempt because it has pretensions of showing Britney as mature and an intelligent queen of the clubs. But the dry seriousness and the overdone need to appear more mature, is not present on the rest of the album.

Here, there's only the happy and at times irrestistable chart type pop that rules.

Max Martin has not re-invented the dynamite with "Overprotected", but it sticks like glue with the bombastic production, glossy vocals and its very "spearsy" melody.
"Lonely" is a much more natural and deliverable track than "I'm A Slave 4 U", directing more towards a new R&B inspired sound. Janet Jackson is gonna moan when she hears the funky and aggressive little number.
"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" is the Max Martin ballad which is gonna lead Britney through the upcoming movie debut "Crossroads", due out in February. It's extremely calculated as a big movie ballad, but has its innosence and a grace which makes you like it. This is gonna be big.
"Anticipating" is one hell of a charming disco flirt, with Chic boss Nile Rodgers' funky 77-guitar, THE string arrangement and Britney's smart vocal lines.

Even Rodney Jerkins' heavy version of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock'n'Roll" works like a charm. The track is the theme of each party's headbanging the winter of 2002. "When I Found You" is a run-through sweet teenage girl ballad and a sure hit. "Bombastic Love" is Max Martin's Abba-tribute, with a chorus very close to "Oops!...I Did It Again", but much like the other tracks on this album, it has a young freshness and an immediateness which will hit your head before you know it.

It's pure pop, and it's genuinely catchy. It's everything you're missing on Michael Jackson's new album, and it's everything needed for "Britney" to be a gigantic success from the North Cape to Cape Town.

'Kiss FM' Goes Too Far in Britney Cash Contest.
From Chicago Sun-Times: No one ever accused radio of having an overabundance of good taste. But in this case, even the bosses of WKSC-FM (103.5) admit they crossed the line. In conjunction with the release this week of Britney Spears' new album, "Britney," the contemporary-hit station known as "Kiss FM" launched a contest offering its young female listeners a chance to win "Boobies Like Britney." "Wanna be like Britney?" the Clear Channel Communications station teased in on-air promos and on its Web site. "You first met her on 'The Mickey Mouse Club.' You've watched her GROW into every guy's fantasy slave. Now you want what she's got! Enter to win 'Boobies Like Britney' and the $5,000 grand prize!" In order to win the grand prize (presumably enough to finance breast augmentation surgery) as well as tickets to Spears' Nov. 28 concert in Chicago, contestants were invited to submit their photos along with essays of 50 words or less on why they should win "Boobies Like Britney." "Kiss FM" listeners would then be encouraged to go online to vote for their choice to win a "Britneyesque transformation." It might surprise you to know that the vice president and general manager of "Kiss FM" and the station's marketing and promotions director are women. In fact, they are sophisticated and intelligent professionals. So how they both could have signed off on such a sexist, insulting and irresponsible promotion is utterly baffling. Not surprisingly, complaints began pouring in almost as soon as the contest was announced. On Tuesday, station boss Kathy Stinehour went on the air with something that sounded close to an apology. "Some have indicated that the title of the promotion sends the wrong message to young women in Chicago. I agree," Stinehour told listeners. "In the interests of making the promotion exciting, our programmers crossed the line. We will immediately change the direction of the Britney promotion and ask you to keep listening and keep giving us feedback." So how did "Kiss FM" change the direction of the contest? By simply altering the name of it to "Body Like Britney" and recasting it as a chance to win $5,000 for a makeover to look like the singer. "This was never about a boob job, although I know it appears that way," Stinehour later said in an interview. "We were not giving away breast augmentation in any way, shape or form. We're giving away $5,000 in cash for whatever the person chooses to do with it. "Britney's breasts are really only one part of her whole package anyway. There are lots of moving parts to her--her clothes, her hair, her makeup, all that stuff. "The intent was that this would get a lot of talk and attention and discussion for the radio station. That's just what it's doing."

Battle of the Albums
Ananova reported that Britney Spears, Michael Jackson and Steps are battling it out for the number one album spot. There are only a few hundred sales between the three albums, according to midweek sales figures. Michael Jackson's Invincible is currently number one in the Official UK Album Charts. Steps are at number two with Gold. Britney Spears' new album Britney was released this week. HMV's Gennaro Castaldo says it's going to be a three-way scrap. He said: "There's only a few hundred either way and with the majority of records sold on a Saturday, there's no guarantee who will take the number one spot. "It's going to be very close."

Britney Wants Fans To See Her In A Different Light
Britney wants fans to see her ``in a different light that they've never seen me in before.'' ``This music that I'm singing right now is such a reflection of me and who I am,'' Spears told reporters. Her new album, ``Britney,'' is due for release Tuesday. Songs on the album include ``I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.'' The 19-year-old singer opened her new tour in Columbus, Ohio, last week. Although she had performed at this year's MTV Video Music Awards with a snake around her neck, she said there are no animals on the tour. ``I'm already doing enough crazy stuff. No animals,'' she said with a laugh. ``I was going through the run-through doin' all my stuff and I was like, `By the time I'm 30, there's not going to be anything left for me to do.''

The Sun reported that Britney Spears has doubled the security for her US tour. She has hired extra minders for her journey around America in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. But the singer, who kicked off her 30-date Britney 2001 tour in Ohio last week after a series of delays, refuses to fly. Instead she will clock up around 50,000 miles on her tour bus.

Boycott Britney? NO WAY!
Matt Flahive from The Cornell Daily Sun wrote an article attempting to initiate a boycott of the new Britney CD.

Here is the article:
This Tuesday, millions of Americans will make a choice that will affect this country's future. Their decision will either support or reject the direction of our society; together we can make a difference. No, this is not about Election Day, this is bigger. Tuesday is the day Britney Spears' new album, "Britney," hits the shelves. Record sales of "Britney" will show us just how much America supports Spears' two-faced actions. She boasts large sales to guys worshipping her like a sex goddess, and even more sales to young girls worshipping her like a hero. This is a dangerous combination. If Americans choose wisely and boycott the upcoming album, Britney will be forced to recognize the error in her hypocritical ways. And all the slinky spandex suits in the world won't get her out of this one.

Read the rest of the article here. This leads to the interesting question: If a college newspaper is telling its students to not buy Britney's new CD, than maybe her cd is reaching the older audience she needs.

thanks Aldo

Leafing through the new Spin Magazine (with Kid Rock on the cover) I noticed an ad that said Britney would be performing at this years Billboard Music Awards on December 4th. This was speculated as the reason her NY MSG concert was moved to Dec. 5th.

Also listed as performers are NSYNC, Alicia Keys, and Shaggy.

Britney Spears Street
Germans living in Frankfurt can soon look forward to taking a stroll down Britney Spears Street or hanging out in U2 Square. As Frankfurt prepares for the MTV EUROPE AWARDS, the German city's mayor has temporarily renamed local streets in honour of the pop stars for the November 8th event. Bright orange plastic signs bearing the names of stars including Janet Jackson, Madonna, and Robbie Williams will sit on top of the city's real street signs until November 10th. The new street signs will reportedly add excitement to the city, which has a reputation for being a bit dull. The Mayor of Frankfurt feared visiting pop stars would struggle to pronounce real street names, like Hauptwache or Grosse Bockenheimerstrasse.

Britney An Olympic Gymnast?
WENN reported that Britney was training to become an Olympic gymnast when her music steered her onto an alternative path. The teen singing sensation would work out daily in the gym her father owned at the back of her house in Kentwood, Louisiana, before she joined a proper gymnastic school. She says, "When I first started out it was fun. I would cry if I missed gymnastics. "Then I started going to Bela Karolyi's gym and people would come out crying because their weight wasn't right and it just got to be too much." Then Britney's mother Lynne discovered her daughter had other talents too - Spears was singing along to music while jumping on the trampoline. She says, "My mom was freaking out. She was like, 'Oh My God, my daughter can sing!' And from then on I started doing competitions and winning a lot."

Britney Treated Acting Like School
Britney treated acting classes as her own version of going to University. She hired Renee Zellweger and Kate Hudson's acting coach to prepare for her movie debut 'Crossroads'. The film's director Tamra Davis says, "She had these huge notebooks in which she took all these notes. "In a way I felt like it was her college. She threw herself into it in such a dedicated way and with such intensity." She continues, "I fell madly in love with her. You just can't stop wanting to be around her and look at her and watch her. "She's just captivating."

Britney's Top Of The Parps
From TheSun: BRITNEY Spears says her sexy image is just an act — and she “burps and fts” like everyone else. The 19-year-old singer says young fans should realise she is like any other teenager and her sensational outfits are just for the stage. She said: “I don’t wear those clothes to the supermarket or to a ballgame. “It’s like when little kids go into their mum’s closet and they dress up in their mum’s clothes. “When I go on stage, I do my thing and express myself. But when I come off, I trip and I burp and I ft just like everybody else.” Britney, whose new single is called I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman, also spoke about turning 20 next month. She said: “My definition of a girl is someone who hasn’t experienced her life at the fullest potential yet, is very naive, and still growing. “A woman is one who has fulfilled her life and has a lot of wisdom — gained all the wisdom that she needs. “She has completely lived her life the way she needs to and knows herself in and out. “I’m kind of in between there.”

Interview: Another Side of Britney
interview by Dan Aquilante At the tender age of 19, Britney Spears is a pop icon, but she isn't just another brainless babe with a body.Sexy, sassy Spears has sold more than 23 million copies of her first two albums and delivers her latest, "Britney," on Tuesday. Yet she has more on her mind than self-promotion and her image.

Since the attack on America, Spears told The Post, "All the little things I worry about suddenly seemed so petty.

"You have to embrace every moment you have with the people and family that you love," she continued in her down-home Louisiana drawl.

"What happened was awful, but I've noticed people seem to be kinder to each other since."

It's a side of Britney one wouldn't expect, given her naughty-girl image of late, but she's an unusual artist. Maybe that's why, when other teen pop singers have suffered waning careers as their fan base grows up, Spears' popularity has been rising steadily since she was 16.

To support the new disc, Spears is currently on a sold-out 31-city American tour. She's doing her best Elvis with a live concert Nov. 18 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which will be broadcast live on HBO.

Spears is also using this tour to raise funds for the children of New York City police and firefighters lost in the World Trade Center disaster. She's donating tickets to be auctioned at each venue and sending $1 from every ticket to the fund.

On "Britney," Spears sings a Dido song, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman."

In conversation, you realize how appropriate that song is. At times, the teen was introspective - sharing sobering thoughts about the nature of conflict - yet she was also school-girl giddy when speaking about the new, $3 million California home she and her megastar *NSYNC boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, recently purchased together.

Post: How would you describe the evolution of your records from your debut to this week's release?

Britney: The first two albums - well, that's where I was at that point in my life. This album is really where I'm at right now, and that's a really good place.

Post: Why are you in a better place now?

Britney: I'm really in control of every aspect of what I do. Now I do a lot of things on my own. You know, I'm going to be 20 years old on Dec. 2. This independence is just a really good feeling.

Post: In a number of lyrics on the album, you make the point that you're not a little girl any more. What's the difference between a girl and a woman?

Britney: A girl is someone who is very naive and hasn't explored life to its full potential. A woman is someone who is living her life to its fullest and knows herself inside and out.

Post: Which is better?

Britney: They both have their ups and downs. I'm right in between now. But you know, maybe I'm a little of both. I don't know.

Post: One of the top songs on your album is "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," the song Joan Jett made famous.

Britney: I love that song, and who doesn't love Joan Jett? What I really love about that one is that it's one of the great empowering girl songs.

I think it really fits in with the rest of the album. I do a karaoke scene in my new movie ["Crossroads"] and that's the song I do. So it made sense for the album. Besides, I think it's a really sexy song.

Post: A number of the other songs list you in the writing credits. When do you have time to write?

Britney: You make the time because when you're on stage singing a song you wrote, the song means so much more to you. Nobody has to tell you the emotions behind a song that you wrote.

Post: You recorded a batch of songs and you sat down to pick what was going to be on "Britney." Did your songs get special treatment?

Britney: When we made those final decisions, yeah, I looked at those songs as my babies.

Post: Some people believe that you can know everything about a person by looking at their home. You just bought your first house for a reported $3 million. What attracted you to this one?

Britney: Houses are houses, but when you find home, you know. When I shop, I'm not the kind of girl who takes forever. I know what I like and want. That's the way it was with my house - I was four steps in and I said, "I'll take it."

Post: What made it so special?

Britney: It was so open. There's so many windows. There's a pool. It's just the right size. Big enough, but still cozy. And it has this great country kitchen. It's me.

Post: What about the bathroom?

Britney: It is really big, beautiful and girly. Enough about my house, but it's just really pretty.

Post: On Sept. 11 you were in Australia. What went through your mind when you learned America was attacked?

Britney: I called my mom to make sure everything was all right with my family.

Then I said, "I gotta get home." I didn't want to be promoting an album in another country when so much was going on at home. It just didn't feel right. Being back in America really put things back in perspective.

Post: Are you afraid?

Britney: A little. I don't have answers and I don't know what tomorrow will bring. I'm a very spiritual person and I think the best thing to do is to get in touch with yourself and try to pray.

You can't walk on pins and needles and you can't keep from doing your daily thing, whatever that is. You have to trust and have faith that our nation will take care of us.

Post: If the USO approached you, would you be willing to do a show for the men and women in the armed forces?

Britney: I'd love to. It would mean a lot to me and I think it would be really fun.

Is Britney Fashion-able?
From PageSix.com: Much is made of Britney Spears' fashion sense. At the MTV Video Music Awards last year, she shocked the nation and sparked fashion debates with a black pants suit that she ripped away, leaving her to perform "Oops! I Did It Again" in a flesh-colored, lace body stocking. And, at the Michael Jackson tribute in early September, Spears looked elegantly beautiful in a painted-on emerald green gown. Although she picks out many of her outfits and enthuses that she "loves shopping," she is a little dubious about starting her own fashion line. "I would love to try to design, but I think I'd need help," she says. "I wouldn't want to do it by myself." Asked if pairing white socks and sandals is the ultimate fashion mistake, Spears laughs. "I used to do that," she says. "But the worse fashion mistake I ever made was wearing high cut-off jeans and cowboy boots."

Britney May Marry Justin Next Year
Britney Spears says she's considering marrying boyfriend Justin Timberlake next year. Britney says the pair have discussed the idea of getting married next year but it all depends on their busy schedules. She says she loves Justin and wants to spend the rest of her life with him. "I couldn't ask for a kinder and lovelier boyfriend. We are going to get married. We were thinking about next year but it all depends on our schedules," Britney tells the News of the World. She also revealed the couple have a deal that they never go more than three weeks without seeing one another: "After every three weeks we make time to see each other and spend quality time together. "I can't imagine life without him. If there is ever a problem between the two of us, we just work it out." Britney also insisted she intends to stay a virgin until her wedding night: "I'm waiting until I get married and that's all. When you're married it's special and it means more."

Britney Risks Life Everynight For Tour
WENN reported that Britney Spears is risking life and limb on her new American tour - by jumping 9 metres (30 foot) every night. The 19-year-old singer dances on a stage in front of a waterfall before bungey-jumping into the crowd. Spears admits she's come a long way since her first live performances three years ago, saying, "I went from jumping out of curtains and plants to now. I have really amazing props on this tour. "Hopefully fans will watch this tour and see something that they've never seen before. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster and something really crazy goes on." Teen choreographer WADE ROBSON is the man behind the spectacle, and after Spears' eye-popping MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS performance last month, he says the singer is up for anything dangerous. He explains, "People were like 'Dude, you're insane. You think Britney Spears is going to jump 30 foot every night?' "But after I put her in a cage with tigers and put a snake around her neck, she's like, 'What else do you want me to do?'" And Spears will be using the show as a chance to show off her new talent - playing the piano. During one of the songs the beauty will play the instrument in front of thousands of fans. She says, "It's definitely a work out for me but it's a lot of fun. There are parts of the show where it gets personal and I can just be me and talk to everyone."

MTV Review Of Britney Concert Last Night
MTV put up a review of last night's concert that said: Almost a week late, Britney Spears finally kicked off her Britney 2001 Tour Thursday night after the flu and a kink in her pre-production held her up. Obviously the fans who flooded the Nationwide Arena expected the concert to be all about Britney — the person, that is. And sure, she explored some personal issues/interests, appearing with a bald head at one point, bungee jumping and fighting off faceless nemeses during her performance, but the singer kept true to her promise to make a large portion of the show about Britney, the album. She previewed several cuts off of her upcoming release, due November 6. Read the rest of the review of the concert here.

Review Of Britney Concert Last Night
AP put up a review of last night's concert that said: Britney Spears wanted to make a statement that she's growing up. The 19-year-old proved it again and again Thursday night during an explosive performance literally filled with fire and rain and smoke and mirrors. Spears opened her concert tour here at Nationwide Arena to promote her third album, ``Britney,'' which is due for release Tuesday. She initially planned to start the tour in Miami on Oct. 26, but delayed that opening because she had the flu. Then she postponed her Washington concert set for Wednesday because of production delays. Outfitted in her usual racy costumes, Spears took fans through a wild ride of song-and-dance dream sequences that all carried one theme - her life as she wrestles with wanting to become a woman but also wanting to remain a girl. Read the rest of the review of the concert here.

Britney Ugly?
From Ananova: Britney Spears thinks she is ugly when she looks in the mirror. The singer says she feels like a slob. Britney tells Glamour magazine she dresses down when she's at home. "Most of the time I look in the mirror and think how ugly I look," she says. "I usually feel like a complete slob. I wear a Mickey Mouse Club T-shirt, black sweats and ugly tennis shoes." She says she enjoys downing Amaretto cocktails, now she has reached the legal age for drinking in the US. "After three of those I tell all my secrets," she says. Britney also says she wishes she had time to live with boyfriend Justin Timberlake. The full interview with Britney is in the December issue of Glamour Magazine, out on Thursday November 8.

Britney 2001 Tour
Britney Spears's Britney 2001 tour kicks off tonight at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, with special guests O-Town. Spears told LAUNCH that she loved the large-scale production on N'SYNC's recent PopOdyssey tour and Janet Jackson's All For You world tour 2001, but that she won't be borrowing any ideas from either of them. "As far as the PopOdyssey tour, that show is definitely an inspiration for this, for this tour that I’m doing, as well as Janet's tour, but I'm not going to...I'm not doing anything similar to their show at all, actually," she said. Spears added that she hopes her fans use the Britney tour as an escape from all of the recent tragic events in the world. "The main thing is I just would like for people to leave just being inspired, and just to make them forget about the day and who they are and everything going on in the world, and just have a good time," she added. Spears will donate $1 from each concert ticket sold to help the children of the New York City police and firefighters.
