Spears Taking Another Plunge Into Adulthood
According to United Press International: "Many parents cringe at the name Britney Spears. After all she is barely out of high school, but her demeanor, song lyrics, costumes -- what little she wears -- and other aspects of her personal life are not exactly the thing most would like their teenage girls to emulate. Or, for that matter, their teenage boys to look notice. Now the New York Post says if you don't like her pushing of the envelope so far, you might want to lock your kids up so they don't find out about her upcoming movie. The publication says the new flick for the would-be seductress, 'Crossroads,' forgets there was any envelope to push in the first place. In it Spears reportedly dances in her underwear -- and not in the style of Tom Cruise in 'Risky Business,' gets drunk and then becomes a non-virgin with some help from an ex-con. One reporter, writing in a Seattle newspaper, quipped: 'No word on whether they'll be releasing action figures to accompany the film.'"

Britney's Drag Copycat
According to WENN: "A new movie about BRITNEY SPEARS due for release next year (02) features the pop sensation - played drag queen.

BRITNEY, BABY ONE MORE TIME will be released as the singer's movie debut in CROSSROADS opens across America.

It stars DISNEYLAND dancer ROBERT STEPHENS as a drag queen dressed as the SLAVE FOR U star on a road trip across the States, with the goal of meeting the pop idol.

The film was inspired by an incident when Britney's minders refused to allow Stephens to meet her after he won a Meet Britney prize as part of a drag-queen look-a-like contest."

Spears Pops Up In 'Jackson' Rerun
From Yahoo! News:

"CBS will add more pop royalty to the rebroadcast of "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration," set to air Jan. 9 against the American Music Awards on ABC.

The rerun of the network's successful November sweep special will feature new footage, including the King of Pop's duet with pop queen Britney Spears on Jackson's 1987 hit "The Way You Make Me Feel," as well as a performance by Lil' Romeo.

The star-power duet between Jackson and Spears was not included in the original broadcast as a result of the increasingly tough exclusivity agreements that networks are placing on top music acts. Jackson has been at the center of several such disputes in recent weeks.

Spears briefly dropped out of Jackson's Sept. 10 anniversary concert at New York's Madison Square Garden because of her exclusive deal with HBO that prohibited her from appearing anywhere else on television within a month of her live HBO concert special Nov. 18, sources said.

She rejoined the star-studded lineup days before the event after reaching an agreement that her performance would not be included in CBS' televised Jackson special Nov. 13.

Also in November, Jackson became the subject of a battle for exclusivity between ABC and CBS. At the last minute, ABC had to cut his performance out of its broadcast of the "United We Stand" concert special, which aired Nov. 1. The snip was made at the singer's request after CBS had suggested that Jackson's Nov. 13 CBS special might have to be delayed if he had appeared so recently in a competing network's show.

In yet another exclusivity battle that erupted last week, Jackson and Spears are both cited in the lawsuit against Recording Academy chief Michael Greene filed this month by Dick Clark, producer of the AMAs (HR 12/20).

The suit alleges that Jackson this year and Spears two years ago pulled out of the AMAs because of pressure from the academy, which has a policy that if an artist performs during the AMAs' January ceremony, that artist will be barred from performing on February's Grammy Awards telecast."

Britney On TRL
Britney's new video "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" debuted at #5 today on TRL. Unfortunately for "I'm A Slave 4 U", the video was only on TRL for 51 days, and did not make the 65 day mark for TRL retirement. Now, keep in mind that TRL took some "vacations" during the 51 day period, and had it not, "I'm A Slave 4 U" would have been on TRL for more like 61 days and probably retired on TRL. But nevertheless, it has not, so...

Britney In Transition: The Pop Princess Grows Up
From The Seattle Times: "Four questions you're almost guaranteed to be asked if you're Britney Spears:

1. Are you afraid you're not being a good role model for children?

2. Why do you present such a sexual image?

3. How's your relationship with Justin Timberlake?

4. Are you trying to be more mature?

It's no wonder Spears hates interviews and prefers to get it over with in one teleconference of journalists from throughout the country. But she is still trying to be the good Louisiana girl that her parents brought her up to be, to mind her manners, say "yes, ma'am" and "yes, sir," and try to be polite even when the questions are like this one:

"If you're a virgin, then how ... I don't know how to put this in a nicer way, but I mean, are there other ways that you and Justin work things out?"

Spears pauses, and you can almost envision her scrunching her face in disgust before replying, "We can go to the next question."

Living under scrutiny

No matter what you think about Spears, you can't help but admire her ability to keep her dignity while being placed under a global microscope 24-7. You see, if you're older than 21, you're not supposed to like Britney Spears. She came out of the teen-pop revolution of the late '90s, after all, a product of the same Orlando machine that churned out the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync.

The sugar-sweet pop that such bands produced became an instant target for music purists, and now that the craze is starting to wind down, those artists are trying to expand their horizons and gain some credibility.

So is Spears on her new album, titled simply "Britney." She co-wrote five of the 12 tracks, and the R&B-tinged music attempts to be more tough, more lean, more ... mature. For Spears, who just turned 20 on Dec. 2, it's a crossroads album that can either provide a bridge to longevity like Janet Jackson's "Control," or trap her in teeny-bopper hell along with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.

Growing up musically

"I definitely think this is a turning point in my career," she said as she munched on potato chips. "I think that, you know, I'm really just coming into my own and becoming the person I want to be. ... I know this album is probably going to be a growth record for me. And I just want people to buy it and maybe even, like an older generation, maybe buy it and just have respect for it."

A lot of songs on "Britney" hint at being autobiographical. "I'm a Slave 4 U," although it sounds like it should be a sexed-up Prince song, is actually about breaking the bonds of childhood: "All you people look at me like I'm a little girl/Well, did you ever think it'd be OK for me to step into this world?"

Or take this lyric, from "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman:" "It's time that I learn to face up to this on my own/I've seen so much more than you know."

It's pretty obvious that Spears is going through some serious growing pains..."

Slowly, Britney Crosses Boundary
From ENTERTAINMENT NEWS DAILY: "Tribal beats sound a hypnotic thump. A slithering groove snakes atop a funky sonic canvas of electronic keyboard pulses and disco pings. Then a flirtatious voice, unmistakable yet alluringly anonymous, asks: ``Baby, don't you wanna dance up on me?''

The seductive singer behind this musical invite is none other than 20-year-old pop siren Britney Spears. And the song, ``I'm a Slave 4 U,'' which she'll undoubtedly perform, is on her new album, ``Britney.''

``Slave'' hasn't become a Top 40 radio smash like previous releases ``. . . Baby One More Time'' and ``Oops . . . I Did It Again.'' (Nor does it have an ellipsis in the title.) But it is developing strength where no Spears song has gone before: urban radio.

``It's a great song, bottom line,'' says Romana DeBreaux, music director of Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9, the first urban station in the country to play the tune. ``The phone lines reflected the fact that it's a great song. It was Top 10 on phone (requests) immediately.''

What's even more surprising about the tune's success is that it started in urban nightspots, where partygoers are notoriously unforgiving about anything that might be perceived as pop.

``As unbelievable as it sounds, this is clearly amovement from black clubs,'' says Larry Khan, senior vice president of urban marketing and promotion at Jive, Spears' label.

Credit much of its boundary-crossing ability to the Neptunes, the duo of Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, who wrote and produced the song. In the past few years, this team has crafted hits for the chart-topping likes of Jay-Z, Mystikal and P. Diddy, among others..."

Britney Spears: You Grow, Girl?
From ENTERTAINMENT NEWS DAILY: "Is she a girl, a woman, a superstar, a pawn, a fantasy, a musician, a God-fearing virgin or a belly-baring tease? The answer, of course, is yes.

Of all the labels resting on Britney Spears' sparkly bare shoulders, the largest one is this: Influential. Her third album, ``Britney,'' sold 750,000 copies the first week of its release; her first full-length feature film, ``Crossroads,'' is due out in February; she just signed to do a cameo appearance in the third ``Austin Powers '' movie, scheduled for release next summer.

In magazine interviews, she speaks of thanking God and loving her family, of luck and hard work; in her music videos, she bares nearly all and dances with studied abandon in costumes designed around her pierced bellybutton.

Her words seem at odds with her actions, and therein lies the conundrum at the heart of the Britney debate: Which message does she mean? How do we define this soft-spoken Southern Baptist who gyrates and moans in front of millions? Girl, woman, neither, both?

As a role model, she's a riddle. We look for clues, and find too many.

Spears is the poster person for a trend sweeping the nation. She's a girls who acts like a woman, and she's a woman who wants to be a girl.

Spears turned 20 this month, leaving her teen years behind for the life of an adult, but she's still not sure if she's up to it. It could be that a lifetime of recording songs with messages wide open to salacious interpretation has skewed her perspective. Her double-entendres are mostly single-edged but open to interpretation. Her followers (and their parents) are bewildered by the sight and sounds of a 17-year-old Spears, who danced famously in a plaid skirt and kneesocks while singing Hit me, baby, one more time (from ``Baby One More Time,'' her first album, released three years ago).

Spears' latest release gives voice to what her legions of role-model hungry fans are going through. They think they can have it both ways, and they're spinning in circles. One minute they're craving the freedom of youth's irresponsibility, the next they strain for the liberation earned with maturity. It's an identity crunch, squeezed at both ends of the spectrum..."

Britney's Movie Debut Set To Shock Fans
From Ananova.com: "Britney Spears' movie debut Crossroads contains sex, rape, under-age drinking and teenage pregnancy.

The coming-of-age movie follows Britney and two friends on a road trip after their high-school graduation.

Reports suggest it will finally lay to rest her virginal image when it's released in February.

One scene involves Britney staying up all night and getting blind drunk, reports The Mirror.

In other scenes, she dances to Madonna in her underwear, takes a shower and indulges in a bout of pole-dancing.

The planned certificate of the film is unknown at present."

Dancer, Prancer And Vixen, All Rolled Into One
From The Washington Post: "There was something vaguely pitiable about Britney Spears when she came through town last year. She seemed like the victim of a stage mom or some greedy promoter with a lot of arm hair and a couple of gold chains. All that Ms. Teen America smiling, all that fake-naughty rump-shaking -- it looked exhausting and inappropriate, a "Star Search" episode for pedophiles. You wanted to applaud, then call the child welfare authorities.

On Friday night, Britney returned to Washington and there was nothing fake-naughty about her. Now she's actually naughty, the naughty you can't feign, the naughty you buy in shrink-wrapped magazines. And truth be told, it fits her like a hand-made bikini. Now all of 20 years old, Britney no longer has the faint vibe of a Mann Act violation about her, which frees her to tease and grind without making every adult feel like a filthy voyeur. She's outgrowing her PG audience and growing into her R-rated shtick.

Be proud, America: Our little girl has become a convincing little hussy.

As a vocalist, she's at best a work in progress. Just like last year, Britney seemed to spend most of the night lip-syncing to her own recorded voice. Apparently, she still can't sing and dance at the same time, but how many can? Elton John can sing, but do you want to watch him writhe upside down on a trapeze in a tummy-baring bodysuit? No, sir, you do not. There are Martha Graham dancers who'd put Ms. Spears's moves to shame, but are any willing to shimmy like strippers and moan, "Hit me baby one more time" after getting doused in a makeshift rainstorm? Very doubtful.

For now, we've got Britney and the "Dream Within a Dream Tour," a high-tech and nimble pastiche of flying contraptions, video, garish costumes and lewd body language. The show started with Britney descending from the rafters strapped to a shiny metal wheel that rotated slowly as she "sang" "Oops, I Did It Again." It was a little bit vaudeville, a little bit bondage video. The opener introduced a mini-legion of backup dancers, who arrived dressed like Goth extras from "Blade Runner." Britney brought a similar troupe last year, but they knew their place and were obviously under orders not to upstage little miss CEO. Now, it seems, the lass is confident enough to let the pros shine.

"I want to welcome you to a world where anything, and I mean anything, can happen," Britney panted as she was lowered beneath the stage after the intro number. MCI had been fitted with a catwalk that ran, like the elevated runway at a beauty pageant, through the middle of the arena's floor, the better for Britney to show off her storied abdominals, one of the uncredited stars of this production.

Britney turned up in a handful of guises: She emerged from an oversize music box as a twirling ballerina for a medley that included "Lucky"; she wore a black cape streaked with bright Day-Glo stripes; she tried her hand at sophistication by sitting at a piano decked out with a candelabrum..."

Give Britney The Credit She Deserves
Here is a great "Letter To The Editors" from the St. Petersburg Times:

"Why is it that every time I go to a pop concert, someone has to ruin it for me -- writers like Gina Vivinetto who write the meanest things you possibly could about a great performance.

That's great she didn't like it, but did she ever think of the other 15,203 people that liked and paid a lot of money to see that performance? My friends and I were so excited ever since we had got sixth-row tickets. (Tuesday) we all came to my house and listened to her CD nonstop in anticipation to see Britney. We thoroughly enjoyed the show!

The next day we can't wait to here what the newspaper has to say about it because most girls my age collect the clippings of performances they've been to. How do you think it was to have had so much fun and tell everyone how good the show was and then writers such as Vivinetto totally put down the whole performance as well as the performer?

I noticed how Vivinetto pointed out every little bad detail she could think of. But did she ever mention the big (real water) waterfall at the encore . . . great stage setup, good dancers, cool outfits . . . the special effects, the little videos before each song, the part where she dedicated one of her songs (I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman) to all the people impacted directly or indirectly by 9-11-01? How about how she's donating a dollar from every shirt and ticket sold to a charity she set up for the victims?

What about when she picked out of the audience six people who had nosebleed seats and gave them front-row tickets? What about her non-hoochie outfits (the long silver dress)? Or how about when she talked to all her fans about how they should never give up because without that, so many girls would lose their dream?

There's so many more, I can't go on. Did Vivinetto ever think about any of those things? I didn't think so. She really knows how to bring a 13-year-old girl whose idol is Britney Spears down."

Lynne's Corner Updated For Christmas
Lynne's Corner on BritneySpears.com was updated today for Christmas. Here is what Britney's mom had to say:

Christmas at the Spears'

It is four days before Christmas and Britney's last show is tonight. She will visit Justin at his home in Memphis. Brit will come home Christmas Eve, and stay home through the rest of the holidays. Bryan will come home for a week also.

It is going to be so nice to have everyone home for the holidays. Christmas Eve with the Spears will be at my house this year. Christmas dinner with my family will be here too. I have so much to do! Brit usually helps me plan. I'll have it all to do this year, since she is coming home later. She needs the extra rest anyway. Jamie Lynn will have to step up to the challenge for me this year. She loves to help me decorate and fix the house too.

This year is almost over. I always begin to reflect on the past year's experiences. This year is full of wonderful memories. It's been a jam-packed year for all of us. We've all had so many changes to make. Bryan started a new job in New York. Brit finished her new album, and starred in a new feature film. Jamie (Brit's dad) is president of the new Fan Club. Bryan, Britney and I all moved into beautiful new homes. And Jamie Lynn is singing and dancing ALL THE TIME! Oh, and I can't forget to mention my two new beautiful man-eating guard dogs. I have fallen in love all over again with those huge dogs.

Christmas will have a few sad moments this year. Last week we lost Maw Ruth and Grandmother Lexie within twenty-four hours of each other. Britney came home for the funerals. Needless to say, it has been a trying time for everyone. We will all make the most of the Holidays despite it all. We will make this a sweet yet solemn Christmas season. We have each other, and many wonderful memories. We have so much to look forward to in the New Year.

From our family to yours, we hope you all have a wonderful, peaceful holiday season.

Britney's Embarrassing Beginnings
From ChartAttack.com: "Do you remember what you looked like in the ’80s? That is, assuming you're old enough to take responsibility for the big hair and T-shirt emblazoned with the words "Relax" or worse yet, "Don't Worry, Be Happy." Ughh… it still gives me shivers just thinking about it

Picture Britney Spears, hard-body, virginal (yeah, right), debutante du jour in dental head-gear, green neon socks and a Cosby sweater with padded shoulders. This is just one of the many possible scenarios you may encounter with MuchMoreMusic's new series Before They Were Rock Stars.

Yes folks, reality TV has taken a brilliant turn towards humiliating and humbling the world of beautiful people. Throw some popcorn in the microwave and take a delightful trip in the entertainment time machine, all from the safety and comfort of your crappy, beer-stained couch.

Footage includes previously unseen commercials, photos and home videos of stars like Jennifer Lopez, Blink 182, Johnny Rzeznik, Lauryn Hill, good ol' Britney and many, many more. The show will premiere on M3 on January 19 and will run every Saturday evening
at 8 p.m. EST.

Set your VCR now — it's time for the stars to pay for their fashion crimes and remember the days when they were merely human like the rest of us. Finally, television that speaks to the average joe who buys toilet paper in bulk and rides a bike to work."

Britney's Spicy Moves, Fresh Pop Tunes Pack Her Concert In Miami
Here is a review of Britney's concert on 12/19/01 at the American Airlines Arena
in Miami, FL from The Miami Herald: "The recording industry is in a slump, with sales on a downward slide. The halcyon late-'90s days of mega-blockbuster CD sales have dissipated, as pop struggles for identity in a recessive, post-Sept. 11 economy. But no one told that to Wednesday night's sold-out audience at Britney Spears's AmericanAirlines Arena show.

The crowd of grade-schoolers, teens and adults was pumped to see the queen of teen pop. ``This is officially the livest crowd I've ever seen,'' opening act P. Diddy, the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, said. Hyperbole aside, the audience was hyped.

But those looking for shocking headlines must have been disappointed by this show, the second to last on Spears' Dream Within a Dream 2001 tour (the show was rescheduled from October when Spears developed a throat infection). Spears has matured, no longer needing to act out with attention-grabbing flesh flashers. Her midriff was amply evident, but her multitude of outfits -- mostly variations on her trademark halter top and bell-bottoms -- was tasteful. Even the Sheena of the Jungle bikini she wore during the controversial disempowerment anthem I'm a Slave, her current hit, was far from thong territory.

Spears confounded her critics in general, putting on a show that in many ways was more cogent than Madonna's much-ballyhooed tour. Her stage ran from one end of the arena floor to the other, providing generous sightlines and making U2's similar-aimed catwalk look like a mere gesture. Sets were cute without being cloying, or surprisingly gothic.

Spears' biggest obstacle is her voice. It's not a bad one, although it can curdle into little-girl sharpness at times, but it's just not a substantive voice. It didn't really matter whether she was lip-syncing (for the record, about half the time she was), because her singing is almost beside the point of those clothes, and those dance moves.

From the spry dancers, choreographed by 19-year-old whiz kid Wade Robson, to the techno dance breaks, Spears' concert was a celebration of youth culture. It will be interesting to see how long that will serve her..."

Britney & Other Celebs Have Helped Raise $200M In Past 3 Months
Here is an excerpt about Britney from a USA Today article about how celebrities have helped raise $200 Million for the families of the September 11th terrorist attacks: "...And Britney Spears is giving $1 from each ticket of her current tour to the children of terrorism victims.

Spears probably won't meet the kids who benefit from that money. But that's not always the case. In August, she spent a few hours visiting her Britney Spears Camp for the Performing Arts, held this year on Cape Cod.

Barely through being a kid herself when she became a multimillionaire — her estimated worth now is $46 million, says Us magazine — Spears knew she wanted to do something for kids.

Two years ago, while at a party at Jon Bon Jovi's house, Spears' manager met Marc Pollick, head of the Giving Back Fund, a Boston-based company that will set up a foundation in your name and charge 1% to 5% of its assets to oversee it.

Spears and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake, her boyfriend, both have private foundations housed there. The California Community Foundation is another such umbrella group, overseeing the Angelina Jolie Foundation, the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Fund, the Jamie Lee Curtis & Christopher Guest Foundation and the Jamie Foxx Foundation, among others. In this arrangement, stars are not required to reveal how much money is in them or how it's being disbursed.

But it was in Spears' best interest to show how she's spending some of her money. Having been criticized for her sexual persona and for not being a good role model, suddenly Spears was seen doing something positive for kids..."

Britney Spears' Spectacle Captivates Audience
Here is a review of Britney's concert on 12/18/01 at the Ice Palace Arena in Tampa, FL from TheLedger.com: "Where's Britney? Forget for a minute whether 20-year-old pop queen Britney Spears is a post-teen innocent or a precocious sex object for the new millennium.

In the jillion-dollar, mega production that wowed a packed crowd at Tampa's Ice Palace on Tuesday, Spears was the embodiment of a three-dimensional, stage-chewing dream -- materializing here, popping out of a trap-door there and leaving an open-mouthed crowd wondering what could possibly be in store next.

Actually, the first 30 minutes or so of her tour show played like a dream, turning songs from her three albums into a loosely woven narrative of a little, but all-grown-up girl alternately haunted by forces out of her control and elated by the fortune of incredible dreams come true.

The "stage" was less a proscenium platform than a misshapen, key-shaped collection of trap-doors and staging areas that ran the length of the floor, while offering its charge all manner of performing opportunities.

On opening number "Oops! . . . I Did It Again," Spears appeared on the bottom of a metal mini-stage that rose up like a moat's drawbridge to reveal the singer strapped in as if on a torture table.

That was before she laid down at the end of an extended catwalk and disappeared into it to end the song.

Such effects kept the otherwise amazing strobe lights on "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and the lasers on "Overprotected" relatively pedestrian in comparison.

Then there was the giant jewel box whose lid opened to offer Spears decked out in a ballroom gown before blowing open in a sea of confetti, and the drawbridge that lifted off the stage during "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" (her cover of the old Joan Jett tune), and turned into a metalloid magic-carpet, taking her and her eight dancers to the other end of the arena.

Want more? Don't forget the cartoon-like pink convertible Spears and another dancer rode down the main catwalk, while equally colorful houses dotted the main stage area like Munchkin City.

It was all enough to make you lose any interest in whether the star was actually singing the lines to her songs or merely lip-syncing them as she has sometimes been accused of doing.

The point in Tuesday's show, however, was that it really didn't matter, given the sheer money's worth of its bombast no doubt enjoyed by the 15,204 in attendance at the 19,000-seat arena.

Her voice sounded great . . . and why wouldn't it? The show looked cool and simultaneously raised the bar for all show-stopping productions to come.

By night's end, when her dress was ripped off for "I'm A Slave 4 U" and during sole encore " . . . Baby One More Time" -- when a giant hologram of a woman preceded Spear's own reappearance on stage -- you almost didn't notice that the whole thing only took 80 minutes to present its 15 songs.

But so what? Spears, the hero of millions of star-eyed little girls everywhere, came to Tampa and conquered Tuesday night. And most of those witnessing the spectacle of it all couldn't have been happier."

Britney Takes A Huge Bite Out Of The Big Apple
From BritneySpears.com:

Britney takes a huge bite out of the Big Apple, playing to a sold out crowd including Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Barkin, Bobby Brown and fashion designer Vera Wang.

Britney pulled out all the stops this week at her sold out performance at New York City’s legendary Madison Square Garden. She slowed things down at bit during the show to thank all the heroes of the New York City Fire Department and Police Department and to commend New Yorkers for coming together during these hard times. Her performance was full of pyrotechnic special effects, acrobatic bungee moves, and dancers decked out in colorful, playful costumes.

The sold out crowd cheered her on to the very end, waving glowsticks in approval and screaming loud enough to rattle the entire arena. Everyone was out of their seats, dancing along with Britney and her dancers, even the Moms and Dads.

Britney Spears Shows Dream-Like Evolution From Fresh To Frisky
Here is a review of Britney's concert on 12/15/01 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA from AJC.com: "'I'm not a girl, not yet a woman,' pop queen Britney Spears sang during a quiet moment in her spectacle-filled show Saturday night at Philips Arena. This lyric served as the theme of the thrill-packed 90-minute concert, which played to a mixed group of tots, tweens, twentysomethings and indulgent parents.

The concert featured tunes from each of Spears' three albums, which chronicle her journey from tentative teen to becoming a young woman ready to explore her desires. On songs from her debut album, such as '...Baby One More Time', which she performed as an encore, she was overwhelmed by romance, singing 'my loneliness is killing me.'

But the second album found her more empowered in matters of the heart. 'My loneliness ain't killing me no more,' she sang during the bold dance anthem 'Stronger.'

Her latest album, titled simply 'Britney,' works as a portrait of the artist as a lusty young woman. Though she delivered the sexy single 'I'm a Slave For You' sans snake, it was still a steamy dance-heavy bacchanal. And on the song 'Boys,' she breathily cooed 'sometimes a girl just needs one.'

This frisky new attitude set the tone of much of the show. The staging was aggressive. She entered strapped to a torture-like device that raised in the air and spun her around. And, at the end of her cover of 'I Love Rock and Roll,' she did a Madonna-esque bungee jump off of an elevated platform.

Her dance moves were less mechanical than they've been in the past.

Spears was consistently charming and commanding throughout. Yep, she lipsynced. But at this point, folks should just accept some recorded vocals as an inescapable part of the modern concert experience like pyrotechnics, corporate sponsorship and $70 t-shirts.

The show climaxed during the finale with Spears being showered by a rush of faux rain. This functioned as a symbolic loss of innocence. But lest you think Spears is completely ready to chuck her highly marketable chastity, the concert ended with the words: 'It was only a dream.'"

Britney Feels Sorry For Mariah Carey
Ananova reported that Britney Spears says she feels sorry for Mariah Carey. But she says Mariah's problems could be down to her believing her own hype. Britney says Carey "takes herself too seriously." She told Q magazine: "I feel really sorry for her, but I don't think it's what she does that has made her feel unhappy. I think sometimes it's something personal. "Maybe she takes herself too seriously. A lot of stars believe their own hype and actually think they're some kind of goddess." Asked if she'd ever had a "Mariah moment" of her own, Britney said: "I'm only human. There are times when I get mad and upset. I only get really mad when I feel like I'm being taken advantage of."

Review: Britney's Dance Beat WITH SCREEN SHOTS!
Here is a GREAT review for Britney's new game "Britney's Dance Beat" form the December 2001 issue of Unplugged Magazine:

"Games like Star Wars Galaxies for PC, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for PS2 and Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II for GameCube were considered to be the best games of the show at last May's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, but the biggest news to come out of those three hellish days was undoubtedly that THQ had signed on to publish a Britney Spears videogame. Yes, that's right, an all-new videogame starring everyone's favorite ex-Mouseketeer and multi-platinum award-winning recording artist, Britney Jean Spears, is coming home to your very own PlayStation 2. Titled Britney's Dance Beat, the game will have you rhythmically pressing buttons to show off your dancing skills while you move to the beat of the best songs from Ms. Britney Spears. Your goal is to become a backup dancer for her upcoming tour, and to make things a little spicier, you will have the option to be one of a variety of dancers that each brings to the table his or her very own unique dancing styles and moves. Britney Is #2 On Web's Most Wanted 2001
According to Lycos 50 in 2000, Britney Spears narrowly defeated Dragonball; in 2001, Dragonball received almost twice as many searches as #2 Britney. That's because Britney searches fell in half while Dragonball's stayed constant. In fact, Dragonball searches actually went up in the week after September 11 -- one of the few non-war searches to go up that week.

"Britney Drives Me Up The Wall," Says Justin
According to Ananova: "Justin Timberlake admits his girlfriend Britney Spears can drive him up the wall. The NSync singer says one of his ambitions is to get her to say the words: "I'm sorry." He made the admission in the January issue of YM magazine. "She is one of the most hardheaded people I know - in a good way," he said. "It's funny how when you're with someone the things that you find attractive are also the things that drive you up the wall." Timberlake also says he's best friends with his mum. "I've done some stupid things, but there wasn't anything that I couldn't talk to my mum about," he said. "She told me 'You're gonna do dumb things and you're gonna do great things. As long as you learn from them, that's all that matters.'"

Britney's Limo-Less
WENN Reported:

"Pop princess BRITNEY SPEARS was dismayed to find her limousine had disappeared when she returned from a video shoot.

The BORN TO MAKE YOU HAPPY singer was at the exclusive BELLAGIO HOTEL in Las Vegas earlier this month (DEC01) filming her performance for the BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS and left her limo in a no-parking, no-waiting zone.

Doormen were not prepared to let the singing sensation have special treatment and ordered her chauffeur to park elsewhere, leaving Britney waiting outside."

Britney Won't Go Nude
According to UK MTV:

"Britney Spears has cut her ties with animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), following reports that she was to pose naked for their forthcoming anti-fur poster campaign.

Britney cancelled her involvement in the campaign after a report in the New York Post that she would appear in the nuddy, like previous PETA spokesmodels Pamela Anderson and Melissa Etheridge, and current poster girl, actress Dominique Swain. This was despite the fact that PETA themselves had not requested the 20-year-old to strip off.

A spokesperson for the singer said: 'Contrary to what has been widely reported, Britney Spears was never going to appear in a PETA poster undressed.' The statement also claimed that Britney would provide the organisation with a photo of herself fully clothed for the anti-fur posters, but 'because of the false exploitation, Ms Spears' representatives have now declined any involvement with the organisation.'

A PETA spokesperson said that they had hoped to picture Britney entering New York's trendy Centro-Fly nightclub, which enforces a no-fur policy, with a caption reading 'The only wildlife at Centro-Fly is human. No fur coats allowed.' They had hoped to put the posters up in clubs across the US to encourage other venues to adopt a no-fur policy.

Although disappointed about the cancellation, the PETA spokesperson remained upbeat about the campaign. 'At least the whole world will know that she's anti-fur, so there's some good in that.'"

Britney Overexposed?
Entertainment Weekly has put together an un-ranked list of the 7 most overexposed celebrities of 2001. Britney was on this list, but don't be too mad, she was the only one on the list to get a good verdict, which was "We're a slave 4 her". Here is the piece on Britney: "Britney Spears: Back when the teen seductress hit airwaves in braids and knee socks, it was hard to imagine the ''Hit Me Baby One More Time'' singer would turn into anything but a one-hit wonder. But this year, I could not get enough of her. Whether she was selling Pepsi on Superbowl Sunday, busting a move during her HBO concert, bonding with her little sister on MTV's ''Diary,'' or promoting her single ''Slave 4 U,'' Britney was everywhere...in a good way. The fact that her album, ''Britney,'' didn't do as well as some hoped only adds to her charm. The one thing that scares me is that Britney is pulling a Marky Mark and branching out into acting. Somehow I don't think she's going to have the range of great singer-turned-actresses. And while I love her now, when her first movie, ''Crossroads,'' comes out next February, I may be singing a different tune.

VERDICT: We're a slave 4 her"

They also mentioned that Spears will follow up her current tour with more dates next spring and summer, likely a combination of sheds and arenas, Wright says.

Britney Picture Wearing A Thong
The Sun reported "Britney Spears makes a brief appearance at the shops — and shows she knows a thong or two about keeping her fans happy. The cheeky 20-year-old gave a flash of G-string as she walked round New York stores before popping into a hair salon. She clutched a large cup of coffee on her spree. But one onlooker said: “There’s no doubt it was Britney who was the real hot stuff.” Ironically Britney — girlfriend of ‘N Sync star Justin Timberlake, 20 — has had to COVER UP in her new movie. In comedy Crossroads, which she helped finance, she dances in her bedroom wearing only her undies — but that scene has been trimmed. Another has been reshot so that she wears a shirt instead of just her frillies." Go take a look at the picture here.

thanks Jeff

Nude Britney To Champion PETA
CNN.com Reports: "Will Britney bare it all for animal rights?

That's the word from the New York Post's gossip section, Page Six. Columnist Richard Johnson's Wednesday report claims that pop princess Britney Spears will star in a new, nude poster campaign for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Though Johnson quotes PETA spokesman Dan Mathews, a call by CNN to PETA didn't confirm the scoop.

"I can't confirm or deny any of it," PETA spokesperson Shelly Breitbeil told CNN. She said that plans for the next campaign were still in the works.

Spears met the ire of PETA officials this past September when she performed at the MTV Music Awards with a caged tiger on stage.

The Page Six story also claims that Spears will model faux-leather outfits on PETA's pleatheryourself.com Web site.

Dominique Swain, who starred in the title role of the 1997 remake of "Lolita," is PETA's current celebrity spokesperson of choice. Her poster campaign features her nude (but covering vital body parts), writing "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" on a chalkboard."

Message From Britney To You!
From the Britney Spears Official International Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 1 Issue 1:

Dear Fans,

I'm so happy to hear my new fan club is up and running well. I welcome all of you. There's so much happening and about to happen that I can't wait to share it with you.

There is so much turmoil in our country right now and I feel compelled to tell you how I feel. Maybe it will help you with trying to understand the craziness of it all.

My brother Bryan lives in New York in lower Manhattan. I heard about the crisis after leaving New York and landing in Los Angeles. I was terrified for my brother and everyone else. I didn't want to continue to Australia but we did. A twenty-two hour flight allows you to do a lot of praying and thinking. I calmed my fears by deciding that I live in the best county in the world. President Bush is a fine leader. The American people should support his decisions. It was a horrific action against the USA by a heartless group of people. I stay in prayer for the victims, our wonderful county and our leaders. I am donation my time and money for relief for the families of the victims. My hope is that you will also do what you can to help out.

Love,

Britney

Britney Spears Offers Dazzling Costumes And Music
Here is a review from Philly.com on Britney's performance on December 10th at the First Union Center in Philadelphia, PA:

"At the First Union Center last night, she played to the teen and preteen crowd. It's a crowd that knows she's meant to be enjoyed, not analyzed.

Britney Spears paid a visit to the First Union Center last night, and the runway show did not disappoint.

The pop princess opened with a beguiling little number in sequined black, reminiscent of an Elvis jumpsuit, but showing more skin than the King would have dared. Sequins were the theme of the concert, delicately balanced by an abundance of midriff and cleavage. Halfway through the collection, Spears paraded around in a hat that could have easily doubled as a dark-chocolate cake topped with strawberry frosting. Meanwhile, apparently hungry dancers clad in '80s-retro, puffy-painted spandex circled the fashion-forward chanteuse. Gasps were audible as the encore outfit, a shimmering cowboy ensemble, and wearer rose skyward on a lighted platform.

Plus there was the music.

If it seems like Spears' career has swelled at a faster rate than even her cup size, the succession of hits performed proves her worthiness to fill the major venue. The show, nearly identical to her recent HBO special, was bookended by needlessly remixed versions of the already perfect "Oops! . . . I Did It Again" and " . . . Baby One More Time." Spears, backed by a band and a gaggle of dancers, gave the mostly teen and preteen crowd all the big singles, from "Crazy," "Stronger," and "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" to the latest, "I'm a Slave 4 U." The screaming persisted throughout.

When she delivered "What It's Like to Be Me," from the recently released Britney, it was difficult not to wonder what it is like to be her. Is she still a virgin, as she's has said in the past? How much control does she have over her persona? Is she actually singing live?

Sometimes it takes being slapped in the face with multiple video screens, bubbles, smoke, and confetti to realize what every 13-year-old has known from the start: Britney Spears is not meant to be analyzed, she's meant to be enjoyed. And you would have been hard-pressed to find a fan who didn't enjoy the spectacle."

Lynne's Corner Updated For Britney's 20th Birthday
Lynne's Corner on Britneyspears.com was updated for Britney's 20th Birthday!

What a whirlwind week! Jamie Lynn, Jamie Covington (Jamie Lynn's cousin and tutor), and I left for New York to tour with Britney. There has not been a spare moment all week.

We've seen shows in Atlantic City, Albany, East Rutherford, Madison Square Garden, and Hartford, Connecticut. During Britney's off times, we haven't been "off" at all! We shopped, saw Sarah Jessica Parker's hilarious Off-Broadway play and a few movies too. We even went ice-skating in Central Park... we have bruises to prove it!

A few friends and family flew to New York to celebrate Brit's birthday. The party was perfect. There was good food and music in a lovely yet cozy restaurant setting. The last hour Brit and her dancers took over the dance floor. It was amazing to watch them. They have so much fun, and it's contagious.

Brit received so many beautiful gifts, especially the ones from Justin. Justin called three times during the three-hour party. He was in rehearsals for the Billboard Awards, and couldn't be there.

The next day we shopped and went to Radio City Music Christmas show. It was fabulous as usual. Our friends from home left the next day. It was nice having everyone in New York at the holiday season for Brit's birthday.

Our time in New York was great, but it was also time for Britney to leave the New York area for the rest of the tour. We hate saying goodbye to Bryan, but it was time to go. We drove to Hartford, Connecticut. The crowd there was overwhelming.

After the show was over, Britney and I had a good heart-to-heart. Sometimes she can't believe how very blessed she is, and times like these are reminders. Even though we are all "on the edge" with worry about Maw Ruth and Aunt Sandra's illnesses, we still see how good life is. No one has it all; it's just how you choose to look at your life.

Spicy Spears: How Britney Spins Naughty Into Nice
Here is an E!Online article on Britney: "While everybody and his hormone-conscious mother are furiously discussing whether or not Britney will marry Justin (oh, whatever) or whether Brit-hon was lip-synching for her HBO Vegas concert (oh, please), I've got some infinitely more lip-smacking stuff we can savor. Together.

Know the fab poster of Britney as Elvis that accompanied her Sin City performance? Sure ya do. (By the way, that glittering, Presley-inspired, slit-to-the-navel-ring outfit Britney's wearing was dubbed the "Bombshellvis" by its designers. Love it!)

Well, my strut-smart snoopers, here's a little background from the photo shoot for that poster with pizzazz:

Location: Smashbox Studios, Hollywood, USA (Culver City, if I'm telling the truth).

Temperature: Red-hot. (Not only was Spears' presence heating things up, Salma Hayek was next door doing her own shoot and, of course, dropped by to kiss B.S.'s Elvis ring. Not kidding.)

Chaperone: Britney's omnipresent (and rather savvy) mother, Lynne.

Mood: Wild.

Result: Luscious girl-woman B.S., according to lucky onlookers, was "falling out of her outfit" and so hell-bent on grinding her booty for the camera, Elvis-style, that the photographer actually had to ask Britney to stop.

Problem: The 20-year-old's private parts--which Justin's g-f kept reaching down and grabbing, much to the lensman's dismay. Hey, sounds pretty kinky to moi. You go, girl!

Irony: Mama Spears chatted nonstop through the shoot about what "a fine example" her daughter was setting with her "clean living" and "chaste image." (Future irony, of course, will be provided by Brit's upcoming movie, Crossroads, which deals heavily with teen pregnancy.)

Compliance: Total. "She may have showed off her ass a little too much," said one of the many highly paid staffers, "but I've never seen anybody work her ass off harder than Britney did. Never complained; did everything she was asked."

Or was asked not to, as it were.

Oh, my. Now all that gossip about a male stripper being at the Louisiana babe's recent B-day pah-tay in New Jersey doesn't seem so out of whack. (Kindasortamaybe.)

Besides, just because a gal knows how to get down (and then some) doesn't mean she's necessarily that way when the cameras are covered up."

Oops! Spears Misses Mark At Hub Show
Here is a review from The Boston Herald of Britney's December 9th Concert at the FleetCenter in Boston: While there was no shortage of sparkly spectacle during Britney Spears' show at the FleetCenter last night, the end result was oddly uncaptivating. Maybe it was the middling execution of the Dream Within a Dream conceptual framework, since none of the many moving set pieces, video images, costumes, dance moves or personas seemed linked to either each other or any dream concept. Or perhaps it was the fact that Spears' vocals - both live and Memorex - were almost completely drowned out by her thumping, synth-driven band for 80 percent of the 90-minute show, leeching away an important artist-audience connection. It was not for a lack of effort on Spears' part, however. The newly minted 20-year-old worked hard to hit every mark, be it a sinuous pelvic gyration or scripted stage patter about the beauty of the nation coming together since Sept. 11. From the moment she arrived from under the stage twirling on what looked like a medieval bondage rack inaudibly cooing ``Oops! I Did it Again,'' to the moment she took leave of it, soaked to the bone in tight jeans and a bustier after an authentic rain-drenched techno-fied encore of ``Baby One More Time,'' Spears ardently shook her booty with the best of them alongside eight dancers. But no lasting impression of an image was made. Songs from her new, more mature album ``Britney'' play up the theme of Spears taking control, but the show itself seemed an uncomfortable struggle between little girl fantasies of being a princess-ballerina (``Born to Make You Happy'') and tarted-up club 'ho (``I'm a Slave 4 U''). The Dido-penned ballad ``I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,'' in which Spears' live vocals were audible and adequate, seemed to capture that dilemma exactly. Both the sexpot and the baby doll seem like dress-up personae. Certainly, few people go to a show by a pleasant pop trifle like Spears seeking substance, but even her sisters in the lip synch and dance club like Janet Jackson and Cher manage to cement concrete and personable images that make a connection that seemed to be lacking in last night's performance.

Britney Reshoots Film Scenes
WorldPop.com reported: Following test-screenings of her debut film, Crossroads, Britney Spears has been forced to reshoot certain scenes. The scenes involved Britney in various states of undress. The film was to have opened with Spears dancing around in her bedroom dressed in her underwear. Britney then skips down the stairs semi-naked and embarrasses her father, played by Dan Akroyd. Now the scene has been re-cut with Britney wearing her school uniform instead. In another scene, the star was originally filmed in her underwear preparing to go to bed with a man she has picked up in a bar. The scene has now been reshot with Britney wearing a shirt. Spears, who celebrated her 20th birthday last week, has given herself five years to make her name in Hollywood. She partly paid for the financing of Crossroads out of her own personal fortune. In the film Britney plays Lucy, a poor white girl who drives across America with two female schoolfriends and a hijacked male to be reunited with her mother in Los Angeles. Along the way, there are comic incidents and hilarious mayhem. Some of Britney's lines have also been cut in order to concentrate more on her screen mother, played by Sex and the City TV star Kim Catrall. Audiences at test screenings held over the past few weeks in New York and California have complained that even at a relatively short 105 minutes, the film went on for too long. The film, described by its director as a comedy about growing up is part of Britney's long term plan to become a movie star. She will follow up Crossroads with a cameo appearance in the forthcoming Austin Powers 3 film, Goldmember. Britney has also been approached to play a small part in the film adaptation of the musical Chicago with Kevin Kline, Renée Zellweger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The makers of Crossroads insist the film is still in 'rough form' and is not intended as the final print. 'It is unfair to make judgments from this because it is a work in progress,' said a studio executive. 'Changes will be part of the process of making a great Britney movie for release in February. She will sing, dance and cavort in skimpy clothes, just like her fans expect her to.'

Britney Told To Put Her Clothes On
PeopleNews.com has reported: Following test-screenings of her debut film, Crossroads, Britney has had to re-shoot some scenes wearing more clothes. Scenes that audiences particularly disliked included the opening scene with the virginal singer dancing around her bedroom in her underwear and a scene containing the stirring line, ‘What is so great about me?’. Some scenes have been reworked so that they concentrate less on Spears herself and more on the other characters. Audiences at test screenings have also complained that even at 105 minutes, short by current Hollywood standards, the film was far too long. The film, financed in part by Britney, is intended to see the bubble-gum singer gain a credible reputation in films as well as success in the pop world. Early indications, though, show that Britney should stick to watch she’s good at, singing in her school uniform.

Britney "Bondage" Ballad Hits Sour Note
PageSix.com reported: "Britney Spears' song, which touches on the subject of slavery, has her tied up in p.r. knots (Phil Roach/IPOL). Pop tart Britney Spears has rubbed anti-slavery activists the wrong way with her latest single "I'm a Slave 4U." The song, which seems to be more about a romantic entanglement than modern-day slavery, inspired an escaped slave to write the songstress, asking her to consider the political implications of her sultry lyrics. "When I hear you sing ‘I'm a Slave 4U,' I hear much more than a simple metaphor," wrote Francis Bok, 22, who was a slave for 10 years in Sudan. "I know you don't mean any harm. You probably just didn't know that millions of people, many of them our age, are enslaved around the world," he said. "You've got the voice, please use it to educate your fans about slavery and urge them to become abolitionists." Spears' publicist didn't return The Post's calls." (News Story Via NYPost.com)

Crossroads is due for release next year, but a Hollywood expert says, "As a lot of the fans at the preview weren't happy, it could undergo significant changes."

Britney's Performance At MSG "Eyes on Britney, Mind Off Trouble"
NewsDay.com also had a great review of Britney's performance at Madison Square Garden last night. Here is some of the review: "The young fans who showed up early last night for Britney Spears' Madison Square Garden concert said her stylish spectaculars - while maybe not the best music in the world - offer them a much-needed distraction. "She helps take my mind off things," said John Reyes, 16, of Jackson Heights, who was attending his fifth Spears' concert. "I like her music, the way she looks and that she dances good." Reyes, who also attended the pop princess' Nov. 7 show at the Nassau Coliseum - which was well-guarded by heavily armed officers - said he was surprised by the seemingly relaxed nature of security last night. "I was expecting to see at least triple the machine guns here," he said. But his friend, Christine Hobbes, 16, also of Jackson Heights, believed the security was adequate. She added that although Spears' dance music is not necessarily profound or relevant to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, "It's uplifting. It takes your mind off it." Among Spears' female fans last night was Maria Phillips, 8, of the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Dressed in bell-bottom jeans and a white top with glittery hearts, Maria said she has been a fan since hearing her first Spears tape five years ago. Maria, who said she has formal dance training, said she gains inspiration from Spears' performances..." Click Here to read the entire article.

Britney's Performance At MSG "So Hot, She Sizzles"
The New York Post had a review of Britney's performance last night at Madison Square Garden. Here is a bit of the article: "EVERY show, from when she was a kid through her recent Las Vegas HBO spectacular, was practice for Britney Spear's headlining concert at Madison Square Garden last night. If P.T. Barnum worked in rock 'n' roll, this is the kind of extravaganza the master showman would have designed. Laser lights shot across the Garden, fireworks exploded, confetti flew and Britney was on-fire hot. By the third tune, you had to wonder how the just-turned-20 pop princess was going to keep up that level of excitement throughout her 90-minute show. She did it with her racy costumes and one of the most elaborately built stages in rock. The concert was built around every young girl's worries and passions and every boy's fantasy. Early in the concert, when Britney was introducing her piano ballad, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," she said, "I'm not that innocent. I get a lot of flak for what I wear and what I say, but I'm not a little girl anymore." Throughout the night, she proved that. In this song, she was passionate, powerful and believable. With all of the elaborate staging, the show took a slightly dangerous turn when Britney and a gaggle of girl dancers performed Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll" from a 10-by-20-foot platform suspended above the Garden's floor..." Britney Named One Of US Magizines Women of the Year
Britney Spears has been names one of the Women of The Year According to US Magazine. 12 women were featured in this years issue and here is what US Magaizine had to say about Britney: After smiling politely and patiently through a two-year dialogue with the world about puberty, her clothes (or lack of them), rumored boob jobs and whether she has had sex with her boyfriend, 'NSync star Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears had finally had enough. "I'm not a role model," she declared earlier this year. "When I go on stage I do my thing and I perform. And that's my time to express myself. And when I come off I trip, and I burp, and I fart just like everybody else. With that, the newly turned 20-year-old kissed her teens good-bye after a year that biographers will describe as the one when America's favorite virgin transformed herself into a vixen. Her jeans got lower, her G-string more visible, and her tops skimpier. She released her third album, aptly titled Britney. She hosted the American Music Awards, danced with a snake on the MTV Video Music Awards, mounted a 30-city U.S. tour, performed on HBO and acted in her first movie, Crossroads, due in February.Far more interesting, though, are the other things she has done. Spears confessed that every now and then she enjoys a cocktail -- a cosmopolitan to be exact. "But I never go overboard," she said. She also acknowledged that her relationship with Timberlake is serious. "I'm very in love, and it's just really cool," she said. As for sex? "There are certain things I think are personal," she said. All we can be certain of is that this Mouseketeer turned Madonna heir apparent has left girlhood in her closet. Is Spears a woman? " I think I'm on the verge of being a woman."

Spears vs. Thomas on Star Search
ABCNEWS.COM had an interesting article about Britney and Star Search which said Britney Spears, Drew Carey, Rosie O'Donnell and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake are all be big stars now, but back in the 1980s, the judges on Star Search didn't think they had what it takes. Bellybutton-bearing star Britney Spears once lost out to Marty Thomas. Back in 1992, 12-year-old Marty Thomas beat out his Star Search competitor — an 11-year-old named Britney Spears. "I remember walking offstage thinking, 'She's going to beat me,'" said Thomas. When the judges him gave him four out of four stars, Thomas said he was "shocked out of my mind." Thomas went on to have a singing career that has taken him from television to Radio City Music Hall. But the cute brunette who walked off the Star Search stage in defeat went on to be a multimillion-dollar, platinum-selling phenomenon — and a blonde. Thomas said Spears had the drive to become a star, even back then. "She wanted it. She wanted it bad," he said. "She worked. That's what you've got to do." Asked if he feels any envy now, Thomas said: "There's always going to be a certain amount of, 'Man, I wish that were me.' But I've never for a minute felt jealous of it. I've never for a minute felt anything but sheer pride for her."
