Photographer Herb Ritts Dies at Age 50
Herb Ritts, a celebrity and fashion photographer, died Thursday in California, due to complications with pneumonia. Britney Spears is one of the many celebrities he worked with throughout his successful career. He worked with Britney several times, shooting her cover art and promotional pictures for her tour.

Britney Spears Sues Skechers Over Skating Line
Reuters.com reports Britney Spears has sued Skechers USA, Inc. for more than $1.5 million, claiming the Los Angeles footwear company used her to plug its own roller skates instead of a skating line she designed.

Skechers USA. Inc. hired the 21-year-old pop princess on Sept. 1, 2001 to endorse its products, according to the lawsuit filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

The contract included a bonus royalty payment to the pop princess in the event that sales increased dramatically as a result of her endorsement -- a feat she accomplished in 2002 but was only partly compensated for, the suit claimed.

A subsequent deal between Britney Brands and Skechers to sell roller skate-shoes and skating accessories fell apart over Skechers' slowness in finding a company to make the products and its failure to market them, the suit said.

And, Spears alleges, the footwear company backed out of a written agreement to sponsor her 2001/2002 concert tour and sell the Britney Brands skates and products.

"Skechers USA used the lure of association with Ms. Spears to benefit sales of their own branded products and failed to honor basic agreements with Britney Brands," Jonathan Solish, an attorney for Britney Brands, wrote in the lawsuit.

Skechers officials could not be reached for comment.

The suit asks a judge to order Skechers to pay $1 million due to Spears under the merchandising agreement, $500,000 under the tour sponsorship agreement plus unspecified damages and attorneys fees.

Britney Spears: Legal Blonde
People.com has featured Britney, and her accomplishments in 2002. On her last album she sang about not yet being a woman, but Britney Spears turned 21 on Dec. 2 and has emerged as a very capable, very confident, very stand-on-her-own-two-feet kind of person. Of course, nothing speeds up the growth process like a kettle of bad karma. This year Spears was challenged on the charts by a new wave of grittier singer-songwriters like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch. She also coped with her parents' divorce. In June she opened a Manhattan restaurant, NYLA, that proved to be a flop, and she pulled out by November.
But her troubles began in March, when she suffered a very public breakup with 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake after a three-year relationship. "It was all pretty horrible," she admits. "I cried a lot, and it wasn't fun." Some solace from mom Lynne in Louisiana and a few bowls of Baskin-Robbins' Pralines 'n Cream helped mend her wounds, though, and after a summer tour she has just wrapped up a three-month sabbatical. "Britney is the kind of person who is crushed for one day and then picks herself up and carries on," says Steve Lunt, a vice president at Jive Records. "She always comes back stronger."

Trading in her low-rise jeans for Versace gowns and Dolce & Gabbana suits, Spears is at work on a new album that will reflect her more mature side. "She is going to have to sing songs that are more edgy," says producer Rodney Jerkins, who's working with Spears on her new CD. "The main key is to do something different to pick up a new fan base." Spears, who splits her time between a Hollywood Hills mansion and a New York City loft, could have a backup career on film. Though she didn't score a breakthrough success in last winter's teen drama Crossroads, she has been sent a few new scripts to read. "Some people want to say I'm over. Some can't wait for the next thing. Time will tell," says Spears. "The world hasn't seen all I have to give."

Britney's Tops In 2002
Billboard.com reports Britney Spears' "Britney" (Jive/Zomba) is the top album of 2002, according to a recently completed Billboard.com poll. A total of 19,505 music fans turned in a vote for their personal favorite out of the top-15 albums on the year-end edition of The Billboard 200, with Spears raking in a whopping 54% of the tally. On the 2002 wrap-up, Spears' set ranked No. 8.

The passion of Spears fans relegated the poll's second place entry, Linkin Park's "[Hybrid Theory]" (Warner Bros.) to a mere 9% of the vote, while third place Eminem's "The Eminem Show" (Web/Aftermath/Interscope) grabbed 8%. Those titles were No. 5 and No. 1 on the actual year-end version of The Billboard 200.

Further down the poll stats, Pink's "M!ssundastood" (Arista) landed in fourth place (5%), while Nelly's "Nellyville" (Fo' Reel/Universal/UMRG) and Shakira's "Laundry Service" (Epic) tied for fifth (4%). Tied with 3% of the take were Ashanti's self-titled Murder Inc./AJM set, Creed's "Weathered" (Wind-Up), Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" (Arista), and the soundtrack to the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Lost Highway/Mercury).

Beyonce Bounces Britney
First Justin Timberlake, now Pepsi.

After two years, PepsiCo Inc. has said goodbye to Britney Spears as its spokeswoman and replaced her with Beyonce Knowles of the R&B trio Destiny's Child.

The 21-year-old is "a multitalented entertainer who has achieved tremendous success and popularity in both music and movies," Dave Burwick, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Pepsi-Cola North America, said Tuesday.

Knowles' film credits include this summer's "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and a hip-hop version of "Carmen" that aired last year on MTV. Her first solo album is expected early next year.

She's agreed to star in two TV commercials for Pepsi. The campaign will include radio and Internet ads, point-of-purchase materials and consumer promotions. Pepsi also has the option to sponsor a solo concert tour, which Knowles is considering for 2003.

"I'm thrilled to be joining so many talented entertainers who have created memorable Pepsi moments over the years," she said.

Previous stars who've appeared in Pepsi ads include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Robert Palmer.

The new spots will continue the "Joy of Pepsi" campaign, which Spears began in January 2001, Pepsi spokesman Bart Casabona said.

The company's contract with Spears expires at the end of this year, and Casabona said there are no plans to renew it.

But Spears' spokeswoman, Lisa Kasteler, said the end of the contract does not mean the pop star's relationship with Pepsi is over.

"They are in conversation ... I'm sure Britney would love to work with them more," Kasteler told The New York Times.

Pepsi declined to say when Knowles' commercials would begin airing. Financial terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.

Britney Announces the Winner of the Samsung Karaoke Tour
BritneySpears.com reported that Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) and Britney Spears today announced the grand prize winner of the “Samsung Superstar Karaoke Tour.” Selected as one of the top 10 finalists from almost 600 contestants, Grand Rapids, Michigan, native Bethany Broekema was chosen by Britney Spears’ management team to represent Samsung as the company’s official Samsung Superstar.

Via a special message, Britney Spears alerted Bethany of her new status as Samsung’s Superstar and encouraged her to always follow her dreams. Bethany’s prize package includes a recording session with a producer in a professional studio, after which Britney Spears’ management will review the demo tape. Bethany will also be given a walk-on role in one of Britney’s upcoming videos.

“I am really excited about being Samsung’s Superstar!” said Bethany. “I’ve had some great opportunities to sing everything from country to opera, and I really enjoyed performing to Britney’s music in the karaoke contest.”

Russian magazine "7 dney" has published a rating (composed by the social group "Gallup") of foreign singers in Russia. According to this information in the Russian opinion Madonna is the most popular star and Britney is only the 6th. Also rather popular are Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Modern Talking, Enrique Iglesias, Sher, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez. But in other rating, the most pretty appearance, pop-princess is the third followed after Enrique Iglesias and Whitney Houston. However, I think it's very strange statistics cause really Britney Spears is better known in our country than some of above-mentioned artists (for example, Tina Turner).
This MTV Russia's weekend is devoted to Sexy Girls. Some Russian stars were asked to speak on this topic and name the most sexiest girl. And a popular duo Smash!! said that they like Britney Spears most of all: "She is very pretty and can gloriously dance." Then there was a little quarrel about what her video is the best - one of them prefers "I'm A Slave 4 U" and other thinks "Boys (co-ed remix)" is better - ater which we could enjoy watching at Britney as a "Slave".

Justin And Britney At War, Magazine Cover Story Declares
MTV reported that In just eight months' time, Justin Timberlake's feelings toward former love Britney Spears have gone from hurt to hate. At least that's what Us Weekly alleges in its current cover story, "Britney Vs. Justin: The War Is On."

The article, which surfaced on New York newsstands Wednesday and will be available nationwide Friday, suggests that pop music's hottest couple are feuding like the Hatfields and the McCoys, singling out Timberlake's video for "Cry Me a River" as the latest, and loudest, bomb dropped (click for the entire Us Weekly cover).

The video, which premiered November 25, features 18-year-old model/actress Lauren Hastings playing what could only be construed as a Britney look-alike in a newsboy cap and tinted pink sunglasses, accessories Britney has been known to wear. Timberlake is seen spying on his supposed ex getting into a car with another man, and subsequently plots his revenge. He breaks into her sprawling house and leaves a tape of himself half-heartedly making out with another woman running on her TV.

Although Timberlake has professed that nearly every career choice is his own, he told a "TRL" audience on the day the video premiered that the idea for the "Cry Me a River" clip came from director Francis Lawrence. And while the clip's sentiment — that Britney cheated on Justin, allegedly with choreographer Wade Robson, Us says (Robson denies it) — might be unmistakable to some fans, the 'NSYNC singer skirted around what everyone wanted to hear by saying, "The video is not about her. The video is about me."

Spears, meanwhile, won't fess up to the connection either. Calling in to "TRL" on Friday, she denied there was even a resemblance between herself and her supposed doppelganger. "The last time I looked in the mirror, I didn't think I really looked like her." When asked what she thought of the clip, Spears would only say, "Boys will be boys."

Despite this, the article quotes a friend of Spears as saying Timberlake employed the tabloid tactic purely for publicity because his album, Justified, wasn't selling as well as expected. (His solo debut has sold more than 1 million copies after five weeks). Another family source said that Britney and her mom, Lynne, are having a good chuckle over the whole thing.

While the Us Weekly article chiefly focuses on the "Cry Me a River" video to support its cover claim, other munitions incidents are cited. In October, Britney was seen in London wearing a T-shirt that read, "Dump Him," which provoked some to insist it was a message to Timberlake's alleged current girlfriend, actress Alyssa Milano, though the popular sloganeering top is readily available at many retail shops. And she was also spotted hanging around Timberlake's supposed rival, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.

While promoting Justified, Timberlike slyly revealed intimate details concerning the couple's sex life he had to know would get her attention, since she publicly proclaimed her chastity years ago. During a New York radio interview, he admitted to having oral sex with Spears, and during his 20/20 tell-all, he blatantly hinted that the two have had intercourse. In a Details magazine December cover story, Timberlake took shots at Spears' career choices, saying "If she had a clue, she wouldn't have made ['Crossroads']."

Us steals some of its own thunder, however, by including instances that suggest their parting was amicable. The piece notes that Timberlake said he "would never ever do anything to disrespect [Britney] or degrade her," in an interview with Rosie O'Donnell in April, after citing a quote from Spears saying that the pair "still talk all the time," though they consciously avoided each other at the Teen Choice Awards in August. A source from the Timberlake camp told the magazine that Spears invited Justin to her birthday party on December 2 in her childhood home in Kentwood, Louisiana.

Neither Spears nor Timberlake's spokespeople would comment on the article. "We're just going to continue to take the high road," a Spears rep told Us, and neither camp returned MTV News' calls by press time.

In the two and a half years since Us magazine increased its frequency to become Us Weekly, the publication has garnered a reputation for running fantastic headlines without any confirmation from the parties involved. Recent cover stories claimed that Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe were an item, and that Eminem and Kim Mathers were back together. The magazine's source in the Kidman-Crowe piece later admitted he lied about seeing the two involved at a Mexican resort because he was drunk and simply told Us' writer what the reporter wanted to hear. And Eminem's people wouldn't comment on whether the volatile couple have resurrected their romance.

Britney Names Stalker
dotmusic reported that Britney Spears has sought an injunction against a 41-year-old man who she claims has stalked her for the last three months.

Masahiko Shizawa is alleged to have made repeated attempts to contact the 21-year-old pop star at her Los Angeles home and once "tried to gain admittance" by unspecified means, according to court papers.

Spears' petition for "injunction prohibiting harassment", says the singer does not know Shizawa but alleges he "has been stalking plaintiff in this country and elsewhere" since September.

Britney claims that Shizawa tracked her to her parents home outside California and sent a series of love notes and photographs, with one note reading: "I'm chasing you."

According to Reuters, Spears' petition asks that Shizawa, a resident of Japan, stay at least 1,000 yards away from her at all times.

As yet, it is unclear whether the request has been granted with Spears' attorney currently unavailable for comment.

Britney Spears Seeks Restraining Order
Pop singer Britney Spears asked Monday to have a restraining order imposed against a 41-year-old Japanese man she claims has been stalking her since September.

According to a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Masahiko Shizawa of Yokohama, Japan, has "tracked and attempted to contact" Spears at her home in Los Angeles, as well as at her second residence and one of her parent's homes, both outside California.

Those attempts have ranged from sending photos of himself along with notes reading, "I'm chasing you," to showing up at Spears' home and refusing to leave when he was ordered off the property, the complaint alleges.

Spears' attorney, Joel Strote, asked to have Shizawa barred from coming within 1,000 feet of the 21-year-old singer and from contacting her in any way.

Britney To Work With Rodney Jerkins Again
MTV is reporting that For her fourth album, Britney Spears is drawing on past inspirations while looking ahead to some out-of-this-world production and help from a couple of punks.

Phoning in to "TRL" on Friday, Spears said she'll again work with producer Rodney Jerkins for the follow-up to last year's Britney. Jerkins, the hitmaking mastermind behind tunes by the Backstreet Boys, Brandy and Destiny's Child, produced the Britney cover of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," an Arrows song made popular by Joan Jett.

The pop princess also told trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter that she had taken meetings while in Europe with producer William Orbit (Madonna, Blur) and electronic duo Daft Punk about possible collaborations. Her working with Orbit was suspected in November, but Spears wouldn't spill (see "Britney Spears' Hiatus Is History").

"I can't tell you. Then it won't be cool when it comes out," she said.

Although she proclaimed a hiatus in July, following her Dream Within a Dream tour, Spears began dabbling with new ideas a few weeks later. She plans to work in earnest on the LP in January.

And like Pink and more recently Nick Carter, Spears might to go more rock on her next venture and perhaps delve deeper into hip-hop, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But it can't be forced, she told the magazine — it's got to be an organic evolution.

"It should just happen naturally from the way you feel. ... I'm in the studio just doing my thing and letting it flow. Whatever happens, happens."

Britney Party Celebrating Stages
On Friday night, Britney rented out the second floor of the Planet Hollywood in Times Square for a party celebrating the release of Stages. She arrived at a kind of side entrance and was in a black corset-like shirt and a black mailboy hat. She was very nice and shook people's hands. There was a decoy Britney in the store and it was the front-page article in The Daily News on Sunday.

Britney And Ben Affleck Relationship?
Sky News reported that Britney Spears had a steamy two-year affair with actor Ben Affleck, according to reports. The relationship was the real reason why Britney's ex-lover Justin Timberlake dumped her last year, the Daily Star credits US magazine Star as saying. Timberlake, the NSync singer, was 'heartbroken and furious' when he found out that Britney had betrayed him with Affleck, who starred in the film Pearl Harbor. Britney is reported by the magazine as saying: "I am totally hooked on Ben - he's so hot. "It started with heavy-petting, but became a full-blown romance. Justin heard rumours but he didn't believe it," an insider told Star. Affleck's publicist called the allegations "rehashed bulls...".

Keep in mind this news is from a tabloid reporting news based on another tabloid, so I myself believe this is a completely false rumor but I wanted to keep fans aware of everything.

Britney Calls Into TRL To Talk About New Justin Video
Today, Britney called into TRL to talk about Justin Timberlake's new video "Cry Me a River" and when asked about it, she said that "the girl in the video doesn't look like her at all" (everyone thinks it does) and "boys will be boys!" And she said that on her birthday she was in LA and she just hung out with girlfriends and did very little clubbing.

Britney Eyeing Orbit, Daft Punk For Next Album
Billboard.com reported the following:

Although there's no schedule set for her fourth Jive studio album, Britney Spears has already taken meetings with producer William Orbit (Madonna, Blur) and French electronica duo Daft Punk with an eye on future collaborations. "I've been off, but I've still been working, too," she says in an exclusive interview with the Hollywood Reporter. "The main thing is I've just been going on my [own] schedule. I've been going in the studio, I've been working, I've been dancing, but it hasn't been someone saying, 'You have to do this at this time.' It's really been on my own time."

"I would go crazy if I didn't do anything," Spears continues. "I always have to do something. When I first got off the [Dream Within a Dream] tour, I was going to try and chill out for a couple of months, but there's no way I could've done that. So after two weeks, I just started recording and playing around. We haven't really been taking it that seriously, but we are going to start taking it serious in January. Mainly, I've just been having meetings with people to hear their stuff to see if I want to work with them in January. I met up with some really hot producers, William Orbit and Daft Punk, overseas."

Spears stretched her sound on her 2001 album "Britney," which featured collaborations with such producers as the Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins, and Max Martin. "Musically, I seriously think I am going to do a little bit more rock, hip-hop and just play with it," the artist reveals. "That's the direction I'm in now, but who knows? A month from now, it may change, and I could come up with this amazing, amazing song, and then everything just kind of shifts."

Asked if she feels any pressure to reinvent herself amid ever-shifting popular tastes, Spears says, "No. Anyway, it's not something you should try to do -- it should just happen naturally from the way you feel. When people say, 'I'm going to do this,' or 'I'm going to do that' or they plan something, that's when it doesn't really come out. Right now, I'm in the studio just doing my thing and letting it flow. Whatever happens, happens."

"Britney" debuted in November 2001 at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 4 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Spears' three sets have sold a combined 23.4 million copies in the U.S. to date.

I hope your Thanksgiving was as nice and peaceful as ours was. As usual, we ate too much. Yesterday was Britney’s 21st birthday. Birthdays always make me a bit melancholy. I always remember times past. I haven’t had a perfect life, but I have more than my share of great memories, especially when it comes to my children.

Britney and I went to a private island last week. It was beautiful and so serene. The island was accessible only by boat. The flowers and greenery were wild and growing naturally on the island. We ate only delicious and healthy foods. A week of sun, sailing, massages, and yoga, helped us forget about all the distractions we endure in our hectic lives every day.

Britney went to her first Louisiana State University football game last weekend. Laura Lynne is a dancer at half-time for the Golden Girls. Britney was allowed to sit in the press box. Needless to say, she was able to see the game and half-time show pretty well. It was so exciting to see Laura Lynne on the big screen during the half-time show.

Britney hooked up with Laura Lynne and her friends to celebrate the victory over the rival team Ole Miss. Big Rob had his hands full that night. I was glad to come home to my nice comfortable bed.

We started our Christmas decorating yesterday. I love all the preparation for Christmas, even the shopping. I begin early, although I like to leave a few gifts to buy at the last minute. I enjoy being among the Christmas crowds and feeling the spirit. Although some of those last minute shoppers can be pretty “testy.”

Jamie Lynn goes back to school tomorrow. I dread getting her up at the early hours again. She has been spoiled by the Thanksgiving break. Oh well, just a few more weeks and it will be Christmas holiday break. Take care.

BMG Now Owns Zomba
Undercover reported that BMG is now the proud owner of Zomba Records but the deal was not one they are happy about.

BMG was strategically cornered into buying out the 80% stock of Zomba that they didn't own based on a pricing formula set up in 1991.

Zomba owner Clive Calder exercised his option which forced BMG buying out his company at a price far higher than the company worth of today. Had BMG not agreed to the option it is believed Calder would have had a reverse option to buy back their 20% for $1.

The remaining 80% stake in Zomba is reported to have cost BMG $2.74 billion. Industry insiders suggest that on current market value it is with around $1.2 billion.

The deal gives BMG ownership of the recorded works of Britney Spears, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. It comes the same day Backstreet Boys have taken action against Calder saying he had held them hostage from recording.

Last week BMG purchased J Records from founder Clive Davies. As part of the deal, Davies will head up BMG and BMG get Alicia Keys and Rod Stewart.

The Davies deal is a victory for the man who was dumped as head of Arista records just two years ago for being too old. In his new position his old company Arista becomes part of his portfolio. The position will not give Clive an opportunity for retribution. It is understood that all his conspirators have already left the company.
