Britney Parties With Ja Rule, Dwayne At Nyla Opening
Britney Spears' restaurant, Nyla, had a proper kickoff party Thursday night with celebrities ranging from Ja Rule to Jeff Gordon.

The restaurant, which boasts 40-foot high ceilings and a catwalk, opened to the public on June 14, though because of Spears' tour schedule, she wasn't able to celebrate until now.

With any A-list party, the guest list is strict, and some people had a hard time getting in. Those with enough juice to get past the velvet rope could see VIPs on the first level of the eatery — such celebs as Donald Trump and Jessica Simpson had the chance to mix and mingle with the likes of actors Donald Faison and "What's Happening!!"'s Haywood Nelson (Dwayne).

Upstairs on the balcony was more of the same, with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Jesse Bradford, Brittany Murphy, David Copperfield and Bo Derek making the rounds. Tables were also set up so some who came to the restaurant could actually eat. Britney's favorite hip-hop tunes from artists including Jay-Z and Nelly oozed out of the speakers.

As for the evening's entrees, Britney has an eclectic menu that features a handful of southern sushi dishes, the $16 Nyla burger, $20 Louisiana jumbo lump crab cakes, $18 duck and wild mushroom etouffee, and roasted pork chops for 16 bucks, among other dishes. Britney's spot also offers appetizers that include crawfish and crab gratin and lobster mashed potatoes.

Britney Dishes It Out!
BRITNEY SPEARS is taking on New York City with a swank new restaurant, Nyla, that pays tribute to her Southern roots. ET joined the pop princess Thursday night at the star-studded opening gala!

More than 1,500 guests including celebrities such as ALICIA KEYS, DONALD TRUMP, DAVID COPPERFIELD, WHITNEY HOUSTON, TAYE DIGGS, JAY Z, WYCLEF JEAN, RUDY GIULIANI, and JA RULE, joined the perky pop star to nosh and mingle.

Located in the heart of New York City in the Dylan Hotel, the restaurant was named by 20-year-old Spears for the postal code abbreviations of New York, her new home, and Louisiana, her home state.

Decorated with warm pastel oranges and pinks, yards of shimmering chiffon, a "catwalk" staircase and a huge fireplace -- the 150-seat venue features regional American cuisine with a Southern flair in recognition of Britney's roots, according to the New York Times. The crab cakes are reportedly her favorite dish.

Britney joins a long list of celebrity restauranteurs including JENNIFER LOPEZ, who just opened Madre's in Pasadena, CA, and ROBERT DeNIRO, who has a few successful restaurants, including the Tribeca Grill in New York.

Britney was recently named No. 1 on Forbes magazine's annual "Celebrity 100 Power List" with a reported $39.2 million income in 2001, and from the looks of it, she's just getting started! To see Britney dish it out at Nyla's opening party in New York, watch tonight's ET!

Britney's Eats To N.Y. Beat
Britney Spears wants to whet New York's appetite.

Donning a super sexy scoop-neck black mini-dress, the pop sensation popped up in midtown to unveil her first foray into the world of restaurateuring last night.

"A clap of thunder," magician David Copperfield noted, as hundreds of well-coiffed guests outside Spears' new restaurant, Nyla, frantically opened umbrellas to protect against the rain. "Britney's coming."

Undaunted by the thunderstorms, dozens of fans lined E.41st St. to catch a glimpse of the singer at the opening night party.

Nyla — that's "N-y" for New York and "l-a" for Spears' native Louisiana — is nestled inside the posh Dylan Hotel and features Cajun fusion fare. The menu ranges from a curious Po Boy sushi roll to a homey vegetarian hominy stew.

Spears announced proudly last night she planned to dine on "fried chicken," which at Nyla goes for $16 with fresh corn, potato Johnny cakes and vegetable slaw. She smacked on some chewing gum for an appetizer.

"I love New York," she told a mob of media. "The energy here is so good."

Britney's party drew a handful of the city's rich and famous, including Donald Trump and his model girlfriend, Melania Knauss, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and his girlfriend, Judith Nathan, Broadway's Deborah Gibson, porn star Jenna Jamieson and members of the boy band LMNT.

NYU student Kieran Sells, 18, waited two hours in the pouring rain to see the singer yesterday and was disappointed that she didn't acknowledge her fans. "I thought she'd at least wave," he said.

But he was pleased he got a look at her saucy getup. "She looked hot," he said.

NYLA Opens Today!
Just a reminder to all you Britney fan's out there, NYLA's Grand Opening is tonight. Here is a little article from the New York Post about the opening:

Come and get it

DESPITE the lousy track record of celebrity eateries, pop tart Britney Spears is betting $300,000 that her new restaurant will be a success. That's how much she's blowing on tonight's grand opening of Nyla in the Dylan Hotel. A sizeable chunk of the cash is going toward security, since thousands of Spears' teenybopper fans are expected to show up. According to event planner Ron Berkowitz, Lionel Ritchie, Whitney Houston and Adam Sandler will be on hand to sample Nyla's neo-Cajun delights.

NYLA opens to the public tomorrow, June 28th.

NVU Productions On Tour With Britney Spears
Britney Spears' current national "Dream Within a Dream Tour" features extensive contributions by NVU Productions, the premier celebrity-brand marketing services firm. From merchandise to in-venue promotional videos and demonstrations, NVU drew on its considerable line of services to help enhance the concert experience for Ms. Spears' dedicated fans.

The design and production of the official tour program is one of NVU's more prominent contributions. "We wanted to offer fans a real keepsake," noted Jim Forni, President of NVU Productions. "Something that would evoke the feeling of the whole concert experience for years to come." With its unique format (oversized and grommet-bound, with postcards, window clings and other extras) and dazzling design, the program is available at every venue.

As managers of the Britney Spears brand, NVU also served as a consultant for all licensed merchandise available at the venues, ensuring the integrity of the brand standards they developed. Prior to the tour, NVU reviewed and approved all T-shirt and related apparel designs.

For select product offerings, NVU produced new advertisements being aired on the large JumboTron video display. These include spots for WFX, SmartFlash, Samsung, and a promotional trailer for the THQ video game, "Britney's Dance Beat." Additionally, NVU created video content for AOL Music that is broadcast in the venues, as well as the official AOL online tour content at keyword BRITNEY.

Outside the concert hall, fans enjoy demonstrations of "Britney's Dance Beat." The game itself features more of NVU's creative work, in both the game and package design. A Samsung promotional vehicle parked at every venue features a bus wrap designed by NVU.

Inside the hall, NVU stages a promotional event for SmartFlash, a new premium Internet product from Internet plc. The event includes hands-on demonstrations and a giveaway drawing. The SmartFlash kit, also available at merchandise kiosks, features package design by NVU. Numerous banners for Samsung adorning each venue were also designed by NVU.

The Dream Within a Dream Tour travels to 36 cities and concludes in Mexico City on July 27th.

From BritneySpears.com: Lynne's Corner "Update from Sunny California"
From BritneySpears.com:

Update from Sunny California

The Nickelodeon world is fun. Jamie Lynn loved her first week and is now into her second as the youngest cast member on the show "All That." Jamie Lynn and I love the "read-throughs" on Monday mornings. The skits are really funny. Everyone seems to get off to a good start together. They’ve gone out of their way to make us feel at home.

Last week Jamie Lynn, her friend from home, Sara, and I bought a few things for Jamie's dressing room. It's fun decorating when you take it slow and wait for just the right thing to hit you. Jamie Lynn doesn't spend much time in the dressing room, because she's either practicing skits or playing foosball downstairs. Britney's good at ping pong, but Jamie Lynn will beat her at foosball.

Britney is in the middle of her tour. No more power failures! Crowds are still wild. Her last few days off, Brit spent in the water on jet skis. Next week is the 4th of July holiday. Bryan will be on a beach in Florida with Lauren and some friends. Hopefully, the rest of the family will be on some quiet remote beach area as well.

Jamie, Jamie Lynn, Sara and I went to Venice beach this weekend. We had so much fun watching the bicycle and skateboard contests. We walked to the beach to lay out after the contest. The sun was warm, yet there was a cool breeze. Later that evening, we needed sweaters. All of us thought how great it was to come home with a beautiful tan and not be dehydrated.

Jamie Lynne and I hated to see her Dad and Sara leave for home. I know it can be pretty boring being stuck with "Mom" 24/7. Dad's at home, Bryan's in New York, and Britney's everywhere. At least she will be with us soon. It's more fun sharing good times with friends and family.

Shakira And Britney: Feel The Love
There are no cat fights between Britney Spears and Shakira, so those of you looking for an all out brawl between the two NMC eCharting ladies --complete with scratching and hair pulling --are just going to have to wait for Celebrity Deathmatch.

"There's enough space for everybody, and she's really great at what she does," Shakira says. "And I think I'm an expert at what I do, too, so as long as, you know, there's people around always making good music and bringing it to people's hearts, I think it's all worth it."

Shakira and Britney have met in the past. "I love her--she's a doll! I met her and she's really sweet, so I wish her the best," Shakira adds.

Behind The Scenes Of The Britney In Style Cover Shoot
Here is what InStyle.com had to say about the July 2002 cover shoot:

the issue: July 2002

the settings: Independent Studios, New Orleans, May 1. Her home in Kentwood, La., May 2.

hair: Hairstylist Philip Carreon used Spears's natural curl to his advantage to create loose, beachy hair. "It looked piecey, like when you've been at the beach all day," says Carreon. When she arrived he applied Kérastase Oléo-Relax to help smooth her damp hair. Then he added a palmful of Rene Furterer mousse. After separating her hair into sections and blowing dry with a round brush, Carreon rolled the sections into big pin curls, leaving the ends sticking out. After removing the pins he ran some Sebastian Laminates gel through her hair to help separate it.

makeup: "I played up Britney's tan (which she had from a recent trip to Florida) with beautiful creamy pinks," says makeup artist Collier Strong. Before adding color he prepped Spears's skin with Prada Soothing Mask, then misted the line's Soothing Concentrate all over her face. Next Strong used a bit of L'Oréal Air Wear foundation to even out her color. On her eyes and cheeks he applied two blushes by MAC: Cubic (a soft muted pink) was brushed all over, and Reed (a plum-brown) was used to contour eye creases and hollows of cheeks. The final touches included several coats of L'Oréal Voluminous mascara in black and La Mer lip balm.

wardrobe: For the cover shoot, stylist Kim Chandler packed the clothing racks with chic suits and sexy dresses by Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior and Gucci. The dress code for Spears's at-home shoot, however, was much more casual. She donned bathing suits in the pool, romantic tops with jeans, and her own pajamas in a few shots.

Shakira On Britney Spears: 'She's A Doll'
Contrary to persistent rumors of a feud between her and Britney Spears, Columbian singer Shakira continues to reassure fans that there is nothing but healthy competition between the two stars.

"There's enough space for everybody, and she's really great at what she does," Shakira says. "And I think I'm an expert at what I do, too, so as long as, you know, there's people around always making good music and bringing it to people's hearts, I think it's all worth it."

Shakira and Spears have met in the past. "I love her--she's a doll! I met her and she's really sweet, so I wish her the best," Shakira adds.

From BritneySpears.com: Breaking News "Britney To Star in NASCAR Film"
New From BritneySpears.com:

Breaking News:

Britney To Star in NASCAR Film

The rumors are true. Britney is going to star in a NASCAR film, set to begin shooting early next year. The movie will be a realistic portrayal of life in NASCAR, filmed on location with real races and drivers. Although the character and script hasn’t been totally nailed down, Britney will play the daughter of a NASCAR vet who is considering a return to the track.

According to NASCAR, they chose Britney because she embodies the All-American Southern girl (tell us something we don’t know!). As Producer Ann Carli told CNN, "It is not just about winning -- it's about family, perseverance and the belief that any dream is possible."

Britney Tops Forbes' 'Celebrity 100' List
Image Credit:Forbes.com She's "not yet a woman," but Forbes magazine crowned pop princess Britney Spears as the world's most powerful celebrity on Thursday, dethroning movie star Tom Cruise from the No. 1 spot he held last year.

The seemingly ubiquitous 20-year-old singer from Louisiana tops Forbes' annual "Celebrity 100" list, which combines earnings with media exposure to calculate the relative status of entertainers, athletes and other famous people.

Spears, who heralded her own coming of age in the recent hit "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," actually ranked No. 25 in terms of money-making clout, earning an estimated $39.2 million during the past 12 months. "Star Wars" director George Lucas was the leading breadwinner on the list at $200 million.

But what she lacked in income, Spears more than made up for in terms of magazine cover stories, television and radio appearances, Web hits and overall media coverage.

Forbes managing editor Dennis Kneale noted that Spears has graced his magazine's own cover twice in the past two years.

(Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters)

From Forbes.com

Here is what Forbes had to say about Britney taking the #1 spot:

The teen queen mounted only a modest tour last fall, her film debut underwhelmed and sales figures for her latest album don't compare with her earlier efforts. But merchandising deals and pacts with sponsors like Pepsi keep her afloat, and she's still a magazine and Internet favorite.

money rank: 25
pay: $39.2 mil
web hits: 997,000
press clips: 25,856
cover stories: 10.5
tv radio: 373

"Overprotected" Retires At #1 On TRL
Well, "Overprotected" retired today at #1! I just wanted to say thanks to all of the Britney fans out there who voted and took "Overprotected" to #1. This makes Britney the artist with the most retired videos on TRL! Also, it looks like Britney's new video for "Boys (Co-Ed Remix)" will debute next week on TRL! Well will try to get the exact day next week it does debute and let you guys and gals know.

On a side note, I just wanted to say a few things about Total Request "Live". Today's show was pre-taped, so I guess that would just make the show called Total Request. Well, if it was pre-taped, how could you call in your vote and when was it taped, yesterday? So I guess you can just call the show "Total"? Well, how total is it if it is being pre-taped and you can't vote like you used to be able to, what should the show be called then? The point I am trying to make here is that I have noticed, as many other fans have too, that TRL is getting pretty lazy. I wonder whats next? TRL at 1pm when no one is watching and MTV picks everything, oh wait....

Anyways, lets keep voting for Britney when her new video for "Boys (Co-Ed Remix)" debutes next week, hopefully by then TRL and MTV can get their acts together.

Tossing Spears Into Sports Classics
I found this posted on the Britney Spears Forum by BigDavis161 and I found it hilarious, and pretty complementing too, and just thought I would share it with you guys and gals:

From ESPN.com

Earlier this week, NASCAR announced a partnership with Britney Spears Productions to make a movie starring Britney herself as a race team owner's daughter who applies her experience in the family business to inspire an ex-driver to return to the track.

Both NASCAR and Team Britney insist she won't be cast as a racer herself (what, they didn't appreciate her star turn behind the wheel in "Crossroads"?), but Page 2 would like to offer the pop diva a glimpse into what it would be like if she took a starring role in some of the classic sports movies of all-time.

Oops, we did it again ...

"The Natural"
Made-For-Britney Plot Twist: Hottie with, um, mysterious physical gifts comes from nowhere to lead a lowly baseball team to glory

"Chariots of Fire"
Britney Twist: Three words: Slow. Motion. Running.

"Bull Durham"
Britney Twist: With Britney as Annie, the memorable Crash Davis monologue goes: "I believe in the soul ... the midriff of a woman's torso, the pelvic thrust, high-pitched screams from teenage girls, good Pepsi, that the songs of Justin Timberlake are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe that you should be onstage alone. I believe there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing any underwear other than thongs and the designated 'Hit Me Baby, One More Time.' I believe in the Mouseketeers, soft-core school-girl outfits, opening your new CD on the morning of its release rather than midnight, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet music videos that last three days."

"Caddyshack"
Britney Twist: I mean, do we really need to list all the things that she's got going for herself (which is very, very nice)?

"Vision Quest"
Britney Twist: Do you think a lot of people would pay to see Britney as a high-school wrestler? Yeah, we thought so.

"Rocky"
Britney Twist: If Britney were Adrian, Rocky would have been so satisfied with his life that he never would have gotten in the ring with Appolo. At a minimum, let's replace James Brown with Britney in a "Rocky IV" singing cameo.

Britney Spears: Not Yet a Woman, Already a Restaurateur
NYLA, the restaurant partly owned by the pop star Britney Spears, opened loudly on East 41st Street last Friday night, not to the roar of a crowd or to the flash of cameras, but to the rumble and squeal of a garbage truck making the rounds on an otherwise empty block.

That's the sound of what the industry calls a soft opening, in which business is kept low-key, giving the kitchen and the dining room time to develop an efficient routine before facing the hordes. The real noise will be heard on June 27, when Ms. Spears, accompanied by actors, musicians and politicians, is scheduled to stroll down a red carpet under spotlights and before cameras, officially inaugurating her arrival as restaurateur. Only then, as Ms. Spears steps across the threshold, puts down the microphone and picks up a fork, will Nyla truly be in business.

From Germany to Brazil to Japan and beyond, the world is watching, often with a smirk, as the 20-year-old Ms. Spears, who cannot legally order a drink in most of the United States, tries to add restaurateur to her jobs as teen idol and celebrity endorser. She will be entering a business littered with more stars than Hollywood Boulevard.

Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and company rode the Planet Hollywood roller coaster from windfall to bankruptcy. Robert De Niro is part of a mini-empire of restaurants that have won critical acclaim and stood the test of time. For those with fame and money to spare, restaurants offer a seemingly endless allure, even though the sad truth is that most restaurants fail.

"It's a much more interesting way to invest your money than T-bills," said David Blum, whose 1992 book "Flash in the Pan" chronicled the collapse of the Falls, a SoHo restaurant backed by Matt Dillon, among others. "It gives them a place to hang out and go to anytime with their friends. Most of these people don't calculate the downside — the embarrassment of having a place close in three months."

Britney's Sis Joins Cast Of 'All That'
Nickelodeon's popular sketch show "All That" is adding an eighth cast member for the upcoming season, and you may have heard her name.

Or at least her last name. Jamie Lynn Spears, the 11-year-old sister of Britney Spears, will join the seven other kids in the cast beginning this fall. Production on the new season starts this week.

"All That" has been on Nick for seven seasons, acting as a kids' version of "Saturday Night Live." The show has launched the careers of Nick Cannon ("Men in Black II" ), Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell ("Good Burger" ) and Amanda Bynes, who stars in the upcoming WB comedy "What I Like About You."

Jamie Lynn Spears has appeared on camera before -- she had a cameo in Britney's movie "Crossroads" and on her sister's HBO concert special last year. Jamie Lynn also seems to be following a similar path to that of her pop-star sister, who first appeared on "The Mickey Mouse Club."

About 3.3 million kids watch "All That" each week. The best-known cast member to grownups is probably Kyle Sullivan, who has a recurring part as Malcolm's (Frankie Muniz) Krelboyne pal Dabney on "Malcolm in the Middle." The other cast members are Chelsea Brummett, Jack De Sena, Lisa Renee Foiles, Bryan Hearne, Shane Lyons and Giovonnie Samuels.

Is Britney Singing The Breakup Blues?
Is Britney Spears’ breakup with Justin Timberlake affecting her work? A backstage source at the belly-baring singer’s concerts says that the usually spunky, upbeat Spears has been in a “deep funk.”

“SHE HAS BEEN really depressed due to the breakup and just wants this tour to be over,” says the insider, who says that some of Spears’ handlers are upset that she hasn’t been interacting with fans more.

“There were even points during the show when she would not bother to lip-sync to the track the audience was hearing. . . as if she did not even care.”

The insider says that “all ties are now severed” with her former sweetie because last week Spears bought Timberlake’s share of the house they lived in.

But, the source adds brightly, “Maybe she’ll be able to sing about her breakup in her next album.”

Exclusive First Peek Inside Nyla
Extra TV got an exclusive first peek inside Nyla this week. Here is what they had to say:

Britney has more then just music on her menu. The pop princess is the proud parent of a brand new restaurant. “Extra” got an exclusive first peek inside Nyla, where New York and Louisiana come together.

Thirty-foot ceilings, comfy booths, and a floating second floor walkway highlight this midtown Manhattan eatery, located at the Dylan hotel.

Bobby Ochs is the co-owner of Nyla. He says, “Britney named the restaurant. The logo was designed by Britney by merely using her handwriting.”

Spears also influenced the fancy yet fun decor. She chose fabrics, colors and more. The food’s southern flair was inspired by Britney’s Louisiana hometown. You won't be able to taste these treats until the grand opening on June 27th. Ron Berkowitz is organizing the event. He says invites went out to Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Cher, Jennifer Lopez, and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Ochs says, “I did take a peek at Britney's personal invitation list. Justin Timberlake was on the list.”

Looks like Nyla will be music to Britney’s ears!

Spears Concert Won't Be Rescheduled
Britney Spears won't be able to reschedule her concert in Lubbock, officials at United Spirit Arena said Tuesday.

Her Friday night concert was canceled after two songs because of electrical problems.

Many young fans in a crowd of 13,351 left the arena in tears Friday after a power transformer failed.

Spears' promoter said she was disappointed that her schedule wouldn't allow her to return.

Tickets will be refunded beginning Wednesday.

Arena officials have a replacement for the malfunctioning transforme. Repairs need to be complete before a scheduled Eagles concert on June 28.

Spears' tour ends in Dallas on July 22.

Britney 'Transforms' At InStyle.com
InStyle.com has put together a slide show on there site that shows Britney's transformation from 1999 through 2002 and a little article about it. Here is what they had to say:

not that innocent: Britney Spears has changed from a little girl in oversize football jerseys and pink tube tops to a sexy young woman wearing designer togs by Roberto Cavalli, Chloe and Versace. Her album Britney, was introduced with a very steamy video for the song "I'm a Slave 4 U." The reigning teen princess continues to alter fans' impressions of how a young woman should look. "I'm going for an edgy but sophisticated look," she says. Plus, her teen years are over. Britney, who turned 20 last December, seems to be telling us something ... On Britney and in her current tour she sings Dido's song, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman."
stronger than yesterday: Since pairing up with stylists Kurt & Bart two years ago, Spears has shown off more of her famous body, with all seduction, all the time. "Britney is more self-confident, and she's definitely funkier," says Bart. She dared to be bare in a glittery bodysuit at the 2000 MTV Awards, and for last November's HBO concert (live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas), Kurt & Bart put together a Bob Mackie bikini top and thong over their Mackie-inspired crystal beaded jeans. Says Bart, "Part badass, part star."

Spears Sick Of Timberlake Talk
No matter where Britney Spears goes, she can't escape the reminders of her recent breakup with 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake.

"You go out to a club, and people say, 'Are you fine? Are you fine?' And it's like, 'I'm here, aren't I?'" the 20-year-old pop singer says in the July issue of InStyle magazine. "What if I was some weakling and I was like, 'Whaaa!' Crying!"

Spears says she and Timberlake, 21, split amicably: "We're climbing two different mountains. His priorities are different from mine right now."

After being friends since their Mickey Mouse Club days as kids, and three years as a high-profile couple, she says they still talk frequently. But she admits it wasn't easy seeing him photographed at a Hollywood club with a brunette.

"Of course it's gonna kind of hurt sometimes, and you wonder things," Spears says. "But you learn from it and grow. I'm trying to get to that point."

Broken-Hearted Britney Eyes 'Cute' Hugh Grant?
I seriously doubt if this is true and would be totaly surprized if it was anything but a rumor.

Broken-hearted pop princess Britney Spears, still hurting after her split from NSYNC star Justin Timberlake, has admitted a fondness for British actor Hugh Grant, a London newspaper reported Monday.

"I'm still hurting. It is a strange feeling getting used to being single again but I suppose I'll have to," the 20-year-old singer was quoted as saying by The Sun tabloid, before adding "Hugh Grant is so cute." Squeaky-clean Spears describes herself in her latest single as "not a girl, not yet a woman," while the worldly 41-year Englishman hit headlines in a 1995 scandal involving a Los Angeles prostitute. But the singer's admiration for Grant is apparently mutual. He was quoted recently as saying Spears was "special" and he would opt for a date with her over pop superstar Madonna.

Spears told the paper she had not dated anyone since her five-year relationship with Timberlake ended in February. "I am the type of person who can't go from a serious relationship and then just start dating someone else straight away," she said. The duo blamed the rift on conflicting tour schedules, but media reports said Timberlake was unhappy about repeated marriage demands from the religious Britney.

By contrast, Hugh Grant has taken a more casual approach to relationships since his 2000 split with actress Liz Hurley. At the recent Cannes Film festival the floppy-haired heartthrob said he was keen on Sandra Bullock, his sexy co-star in "Two Weeks Notice," but that it was "just a sex thing." Grant was arrested in 1995 by Los Angeles police after they found him engaged in a "lewd act" with a prostitute.

Britney Has Need For Speed In Next Flick
Transcending her tumultuous teen character in "Crossroads," a self-assured Britney Spears will live life in the fast lane for her next movie.

Spears has inked a deal with NASCAR to develop and produce a feature film based on the world's fastest sport, according to her publicist. In the film, Spears will portray the daughter of a NASCAR team owner who inspires a retired track veteran to return to the circuit. Although casting has yet to be completed, NASCAR drivers are expected to appear in the flick.

James V. Hart, who has scripted the screenplays for "Contact" (1997) and "Muppets Treasure Island" (1996), among other works, is writing the as-yet-untitled feature. A final draft of the script is expected to be finished in August, and production may begin in the first quarter of 2003 with a budget of $40-$50 million.

Talks of making the racing flick began in July, when Spears was the grand marshal of the Pepsi 400. A meeting was held with Spears and members of her Britney Spears Prods. production company at the racetrack in Florida, and the idea was hatched.

Britney Spears Prods. — composed of principals Larry Rudolph, Spears' manager, and Ann Carli, producer of "Crossroads" — has two undisclosed projects in the development stages.

Musically, Spears will wrap her Dream Within a Dream Tour July 22 in Dallas.

Britney Spears Is Living A 'Dream'
Her life has been a roller-coaster ride lately, but Britney Spears remains the queen of teen pop after nearly four years, an eon in that most fickle of genres.

Spears, 20, is now taking her ``Dream Within a Dream'' tour on the road.

A two-month on-off breakup with 'N Sync heartthrob Justin Timberlake is just one reason for Spears' ups and downs. Her latest singles have stiffed on the charts, and her movie debut, ``Crossroads,'' underwhelmed at the box office, suggesting that her reign may be nearing its end.

Edgy pop singer Pink tweaked her in ``Don't Let Me Get Me,'' which added insult to injury by peaking at No. 8 on the Hot 100 last month, higher than any Spears single since 2000. Last month, the New York Daily News reported Spears' parents were separating.

She also was embarrassed by a Fox News story in March in which she admitted she had never heard of Yoko Ono or the late Linda McCartney. Yet considering the rock community's dim view of the Beatles wives' musical forays, that actually might be in her favor.

But for her latest tour, Spears is getting rave reviews.

The Vancouver Sun said Spears' May 28 concert was filled with pyrotechnics and choreography, leaving a crowd of 13,000 in awe: ``There may be criticism for her sexy moves and revealing clothes, but Spears puts on a good show.''

Born and raised in Kentwood, La., Spears grew up in a friendly, small-town environment.

In a recent teleconference, she recalled those days: ``When I was like in the second grade or third grade, my favorite thing was to go - I know this sounds really retarded - but to go to Wal-Mart and get all my (school) supplies.''

At 11, she joined the Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club and at 15, signed with Jive Records.

Spears first landed on the airwaves in late 1998 with the No. 1 hit ``Baby One More Time,'' a fluffy, staccato pop-rocker written by producer Max Martin, who co-wrote a similar-sounding 1997 hit, ``Do You Know (What It Takes),'' for teen-pop sensation Robyn...

Britney At Home
Former Mouseketeer BRITNEY SPEARS has built her own magic kingdom just a hop, skip and a jump from her childhood home. But pop's No. 1 princess, who reportedly earned $40 million last year, still lives with her mom -- or rather, her mom lives with her.

Britney's four-bedroom, Tudor-style house with a country kitchen is located on a 7.5-acre estate in Kentwood, LA. "It's so peaceful," the brown-eyed, pouty-lipped blonde tells InStyle magazine, which features the 20-year-old multi-millionaire's mansion in its July issue.

Newly single since her breakup with JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, she also reveals in InStyle, "We're climbing two different mountains. His priorities are different from mine right now."

When she's not catching rays by her private swimming pool -- she even designed the shallow end so she can lie half-in and half-out of the water -- she has more than enough work to keep her busy. This summer, the former "Star Search" winner will wrap up the Britney CD tour, promote her cameo role in 'Austin Powers in Goldmember' and open a new restaurant in Manhattan.

So what does Britney do to unwind after such a heavy workload? The Pepsi spokes-woman says she loves to relax in her luxurious bathtub. Her favorite place to nap? Her mother's four-poster bed!

For more on Britney at home, tune in to tonight's ET. Then pick up the July issue of InStyle, which hits newsstands June 21.

Britney's A Downtowner
Britney Spears might be more hands-on with her East 41st Street restaurant, Nyla, than she originally planned. Spears, who has broken up with Justin Timberlake again, bought a $3.5 million, four-bedroom apartment in TriBeCa last week for her permanent home, having soured on the Hollywood Hills house she had lived in with Justin. "She doesn't really want to go back there," our source said. "Her record company, Jive, just got bought by BMG and it's good business to be in New York, and her brother lives here. She's very into family."

Spears Ready To Go Racin' In NASCAR Project
Britney Spears is ready to put her film career in the fast lane. The rumored Spears-NASCAR project has officially been given a green light. The superstar singer and her newly named production company, Britney Spears Prods., have closed a category-exclusive agreement with NASCAR to develop and produce a dramatic ensemble film set in the world of NASCAR. "Contact" scribe Jim Hart is currently writing the untitled screenplay that would see Spears star in the fictional story as the daughter of a successful, modern-day NASCAR team owner who uses her knowledge and experience in the family business to inspire a former NASCAR driver to return to the sport. Contrary to early reports, Spears will not play a NASCAR driver. The unique part about this deal, however, is that Spears may be sharing some screen time with the real thing. NASCAR, which is very protective of its brand and the values it has come to represent, signed the deal with BSP after the corporation and BSP principals -- Spears, her manager Larry Rudolph and "Crossroads" producer Ann Carli -- came to an agreement that the story line of the film would stay true to the sport and show its participants in the most authentic light. That means that, in addition to an approved story line, any scenes in the film that are meant to portray a NASCAR race or specific competitions and/or drivers will be plucked from real-life footage, giving an opportunity for the Jeff Gordons and Dale Earnhardt Jrs. of the sport to appear in the film as they compete at such events as the Daytona 500.

Though the $40 million-$50 million-budgeted project is still in early scripting stages, Carli said she plans to have a near-final draft in August with a planned start date of first-quarter 2003. The elements that still have yet to be put in place are a director and a distributor. If an early 2003 start is actualized, it would coincide with the start of the NASCAR season, which kicks off in February. NASCAR won't be contributing any cash to the project, but does have profit participation in the end gross. Raising money for the project shouldn't be an insurmountable task, considering the sponsorship-heavy world of NASCAR coupled with Spears, who is one of the biggest names in music right now and also had a successful film debut with "Crossroads." In addition, NASCAR is the second-highest rated sport on television -- behind the NFL -- backed by a legion of 75 million fans, said NASCAR vp broadcast Paul Brooks. It's still too early to tell which sponsors or NASCAR affiliates will join in the project or what involvement Spears' own promotional partners, which include Pepsi, will have. "NASCAR is not authentic without our sponsors," Brooks said. "(The project) lends itself to incredible opportunities to bring in sponsors to help support the film."

The signed agreement comes after eight months of sometimes tense negotiations. Talks for the project first got underway in July 2001, when Spears, accompanied by Rudolph and Carli, served as the grand marshal of the Pepsi 400 in Florida. The trio met with top NASCAR brass there to discuss a NASCAR-set film based on Rudolph's original idea. "Unfortunately in the past, there have been no movies that captured the values, the character and the true representation of the sport," said Brooks, who added that anytime NASCAR is approached about a project they evaluate it on how the project can help grow the sport and whether it involves the real NASCAR competition. "We were so careful on ensuring that whatever will be portrayed through this movie captures the heart, family and spirit that NASCAR represents. And BSP is smart enough to know that they want the NASCAR fans to love it." In order to accomplish that, BSP principals and scribe Hart have traveled to various NASCAR events during the past year. Carli, who has been to the Pepsi 400, the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 among other events, said the experience has turned her into a huge fan. "Because we are making the film set in this world, where there are so many fans, I want them to have a satisfying experience. And to do that, we have to completely capture the authenticity of it," said Carli, who will also continue with her other production company, Fuzzy Bunny Prods., which produced "Crossroads." "Our goal is to create a film that honestly portrays the spirit of NASCAR. It is not just about winning -- it's about family, perseverance and the belief that any dream is possible."

Added Brooks: "(Spears, Rudolph and Carli) truly care about the sport. They have come to care about our fans, our story and the community. "Britney herself has a lot of the values that represent NASCAR and her dad is a big NASCAR fan. She is close with her family, she's from Louisiana and represents true Americana," he said. Although the NASCAR project is the first to be announced out of BSP, the company has two other projects in the development pipeline. But before she can fully turn her attention to film projects, Spears must finish the summer leg of her "Dream Within a Dream Tour," which is set to wrap up July 22 in Dallas.

Fans Go Ape For Britney At Alamodome Screamfest
Britney Spears flexed her teen pop muscles Saturday night at the packed Alamodome, driving her followers to pandemonium.

The applause/scream meter, if there had been one, would have rested in the upper register all night. Even so, officials estimated the crowd at fewer than 18,000, down from the 25,000 or so her 2000 show drew.

From the opening number, "Oops, I did it Again" to the end run, which included "Baby, One More Time," her first big hit, Spears couldn't do anything wrong. The fans just kept screaming and screaming.

Early on, the merchandise booths enjoyed a gold-rush business, with lines 12 deep.

Devyn Carter, 12, of Austin and her friends Lauren Burton, 11, and Aryn Cater, 12, said they were thrilled to be at the show:

"I love her music so much," said Carter, outfitted in a Spears T-shirt. "We waited 11/2 hours outside (the dome) for the doors to open, and it was really hot outside."

Just like her previous appearance here, Spears brought out all the familiar big guns — massive fireworks, deafening flashpot explosions and blinding laser lights. Friday night, the special effects blew out the power at a concert at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, forcing producers to stop the show after just two songs. The show will be rescheduled or tickets will be refunded.

The power failure notwithstanding, it's those big-money special effects that have become requisite at every major dome or amphitheater show. Without them, it's almost a downer.

Of course, there were the usual half dozen costume changes and wild choreography by dancers across a massive elongated banjo-shaped stage that jutted into the audience and allowed many fans a close-up view of the action.

Spears ran down her familiar set including "(You Drive Me) Crazy;" "Overprotected," her latest tune; and "Born To Make You Happy."

For almost the entire 90-minute show, the enthusiastic audience was on its feet.

From the nonstop stage action and wild special effects, Spears appeared to be trying to outshine the masters, such as Michael Jackson and Madonna. She came close. She and her dancers quickly sweated up a storm as they frantically ran from one tightly choreographed number to the next.

After a run that included "Lucky," and "Boys," Spears slowed the pace for a few ballads, including one of her biggest hits, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," which included a crowd singalong.

Britney Fans Upset After Power Outage Ends Concert Early
A power failure ended a Britney Spears concert after two songs Friday night.
Many of the 14,300 people attending the event at United Spirit Arena on the Texas Tech campus expressed anger and disappointment as they filed out of the arena

Spears used pyrotechnic effects and explosions while performing "Oops...I Did It Again" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy." The arena stayed dark for several minutes afterward. The arena lights then came on for a moment, went back out -- and, when they came on again, a member of Spears' management walked on stage with the headliner at 9:10 p.m. and said there had been a power failure and, in the interest of not staging an unsafe show, the concert was canceled. Arena power and lighting still was operational. However, additional power is used to bring Spears' high-energy stage shows to life.

"I'm just so sorry," Spears told the crowd, before being met with boos. "Please don't boo," she said, then turned and walked off the stage. Some of the visuals used in Spears' show this year are a barge that "flies" above the stage with Spears and her dancers aboard, a bungee gimmick and a sheer water curtain near the finale. These were not seen Friday. Cindy Harper, assistant to arena general manager Kent Meredith, said, "Maybe a transformer blew."

"We just don't much know right now," she added.

Spears is scheduled to perform tonight at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Her current tour began May 24 in Las Vegas, Nev., and ends July 22 in Dallas. Harper indicated that either the show would be rescheduled or a refund policy would be settled upon. News of one or the other is expected by Monday, Harper said. Shortly after 10 p.m., John Walker, director of the computerized ticketing firm Select-a-Seat, walked into a crowded office where a meeting already was in progress, attended by arena officials and technicians, the concert's promoter and management.

No announcement was forthcoming Friday, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported in its Saturday editions.

Tickets sold for as high as $71 each for the concert.

Mishap Pulls Plug On Spears Show
Cousins Vanessa Monreal, 13, of Earth, and Sarah Monreal, 15, of Sudan, stood together on a dimly lighted grass median at 10 p.m. Friday in front of the United Spirit Arena, watching as cars passed them in the night.

They were angry.

Neither had the change necessary for a pay telephone so they could call relatives to pick them up earlier than expected. They had been waiting there for almost an hour.

Ever since Friday's Britney Spears concert was canceled at approximately 9:10 p.m., just two songs into her show.

That's when "it appears that a transformer blew," arena manager Kent Meredith said at 11:45 p.m. Friday.

"We really don't know what happened for sure," he continued. "It was an equipment failure that warrants an investigation to determine exactly what went wrong. It was just a horrible incident for everyone involved."

Arena lighting still was operational when the show ended.

Additional power was used to bring Spears' high-energy stage show to life, but Meredith said, "We did bring in two temporary transformers to use for Britney, but right now it appears it was the arena's permanent transformer that blew."

Some of the visuals used in Spears' show this year are a barge that "flies" above the stage with Spears and her dancers aboard, a bungee gimmick and a sheer water curtain near the finale. These were not seen Friday.

Spears was able to use pyrotechnic effects and explosions while performing "Oops...I Did It Again" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy."

But the arena stayed dark for several minutes afterward.

The arena lights then came on for a moment, went back out — and, when they came on again, a member of Spears' management walked on stage with the headliner and said there had been a power failure and, in the interest of not staging an unsafe show, the concert was canceled.

Britney Is Late To Meeting With J.Lo
The gossip section at Alloy.com is reporting on DIVA ETIQUETTE. Lesson One: Never keep a diva waiting. That's what Britney Spears did to J.Lo, and believe us, Ms. Lopez will never forget it. When J.Lo's manager arranged for the two pop stars to meet at a party, Britney was over a half an hour late. Plus, the only thing she said to J.Lo was "Hi." Ever since J.Lo's been fuming. Lesson Two: After you piss off a diva, don't ask her for any favors. J.Lo recently refused to hook up Britney with any goodies to give away at the pop tart's restaurant opening of Nyla in New York on June 27. If you're lucky enough to get one of these gift bags, they are fulled with $1,000 worth of free stuff including fancy watches, Jive Records CDs and plenty of make-up. Yowza.

The song's original version debuted on Britney's self-titled 2001 album and has been remixed for the highly anticipated motion picture Austin Powers in Goldmember, which also includes a cameo from Britney. The Austin Powers in Goldmember soundtrack will be in stores Tuesday, July 16 and the film opens nationwide Friday, July 26. Soupçon Of Spears On Menu
Oops, she did it again.

Britney Spears' career has taken her from Mickey Mouse to music to movies. Now the 20-year-old from Kentwood, La., has taken on a new professional challenge — restaurateur. On Monday, Nyla, the upscale restaurant she co-owns in the Dylan Hotel on E. 41st. St., opened for previews. The singer was nowhere in sight. She hasn't met the chef, and is not expected to put in an appearance until the red-carpet opening on June 27. Nyla's name is an acronym denoting Spears' connection to New York and Louisiana.

"Britney was very influential with regard to the design of Nyla," says operating partner Bobby Ochs, a well-known restaurateur. Restaurants always have been appetizing to celebrities, but with varying degrees of success. Mulholland Drive Cafe, on which Ochs teamed with Patrick Swayze in 1988, lasted 10 years. Peaches, a collaboration between Ochs and Marla Maples, rotted in less than a year. Ochs insists that Spears is very much involved in this latest enterprise. For example, Nyla's logo is based on the singer's own girlish, loopy lettering, says Ochs. And the pop superstar showed up "for a good hour" to approve fabric swatches. She also is said to have requested candles for the fireplace, nixed zebra-striped banquette fabrics and insisted that the color pink be used sparingly. (The original name of the place, Pinkey, was an endearment coined for her by deposed boyfriend Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync.)

But anyone going to chez Spears expecting to see Britney memorabilia will be disappointed. No platinum records. No posters. No videos. No bodysuits will hang from the $90,000, newly installed staircase and catwalk....

She Sings, She Dances, She Shops
Britney Spears is in town this week and everyone is, like, totally freaking out. Rumors of Britney sightings have Valley fans in a fit.

Is it true that the pop star went to Scottsdale Fashion Square on Tuesday, was mobbed by fans, but still spent $300 at Abercrombie? Yep. Is it true she's staying at the Ritz Carlton in Phoenix? Probably - but officially, no comment. And is she really just as pretty in person and super, super nice? For sure.

Mandi McKinney, who works at the Abercrombie kids' store in Scottsdale, said Britney stopped by to shop Tuesday evening with her mother, her little sister, her sister's friend and a bodyguard. "I thought she'd be rude, but (she and her entourage) were just really, really nice," said McKinney, 19. "They just seem like ordinary people when you meet them face to face."

Two hours before Spears' Wednesday night concert, girls waited - midriffs bared - in line outside America West Arena, copying the star's signature moves to Oops! . . . I Did It Again. Ava Peoples, 17, had passes to the sound-check and got to hear Britney - wearing a brown bikini top and brown low-rider pants - sing a new song. She even snagged her autograph. At the mall in Scottsdale, Britney wore makeup and "looked cute," McKinney said. Important disclosure for Britney fans: she was wearing a baby blue bucket hat, pink sunglasses, frayed jeans, and a fringe belt. Her famous belly button was covered by a shirt, but McKinney was too dazzled to remember what it looked like.

McKinney, who had tried in vain to get good seats to the concert, slipped Britney's mom a note while the star hid in a dressing room. "I wanted to tell her how cool it was to see her," she said. "Her mom was like, 'Oh, honey, put your phone number on here.' " Later, after Britney was escorted through the crowds by her bodyguard, a Britney rep called McKinney to say two concert tickets would be waiting for her at the box office. Later that night they were. Tenth row.

The pop star and company also stopped at Bebe, a trendy clothes shop favored by Britney, and Abercrombie & Fitch, a preppy store...

My Tears Over Spears
Justin Timberlake has been crying himself to sleep in the wake of his split with Britney Spears, the 'NSYNC star has revealed.

Timberlake, who admits he can't say the words "break-up" since the apparent split, has been the subject of intense media speculation since the end of his relationship with Spears.

However, he has now confirmed that it is all over, leaving Timberlake with a broken heart.

He told US magazine 'People': "I feel like I'm in the middle of a soap opera," after being named one of the publication's top 50 bachelors.

"I honestly know what it's like to have a broken heart now. You get to a point where you're crying yourself to sleep at night."

Timberlake, 21, confirmed their three-year romance was definitely over, but said he had only positive memories of the relationship.

"I love Britney, and I'll always love her."

He added: "I can't sit here and say that she's been a dark part of my life. She's been a big sunshine in my life."

From BritneySpears.com: Lynne's Corner "Summer Plans"
From BritneySpears.com:

Summer Plans

The tour is going great, and time is flying. Before we know it, the tour will be over and summer will soon follow. The crowds are so hyped. I've seen the show many times and I still feel excited every time because of the fans’ enthusiasm. The energy is contagious!

Brit, Jamie Lynn, Crystal and I flew home for Britney's three day vacation. It worked out perfectly because Sandra and Laura Lynn were home as well so we could all spend some quality time together. Laura Lynn and Sandra suggested we go with them to see "The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood." We laughed until we hurt. Brit and I are adjusting and readjusting schedules in order to be with Sandra as much as possible.

Brit had this wonderful vacation planned for July 4th at her condo in Florida. Unfortunately, the ice maker had flooded it! She's working on plan B now for the 4th. Britney has decided to redecorate the Florida condominium with a Moroccan theme. I'm excited because we've seen some great things in Anthropologie that would look really nice. Brit has another project!!

Jamie Lynn and I are going to spend most of the summer in Los Angeles. Jamie Lynn’s own project begins soon and Brit will stay with us when she's not touring. Jamie Lynn insists she must have friends from home visiting on regular intervals. It'll be nice to escape the hot Louisiana summer.

Britney has been meeting with "Make a Wish” kids before her concerts. These children are so special and so brave. They are a real inspiration to Britney. Brit wants to share this with her fans, and to thank these wonderful kids again for supporting her and sharing their time with her.

P.S. Thank you Frankie! Brit still wears the little gold heart locket you gave her.

Eat At Britney's
Waiters at Nyla, Britney Spears' new Midtown restaurant, better watch out for fans hoarding matchbooks and stealing wine lists to sell on eBay.

The pop tart created the restaurant's scripted logo, which is written in her own handwriting. The singer-turned-restaurateur has left her mark in nearly every aspect of the 140-person eatery, slated to open in the Dylan Hotel, at 52 W. 41st St., later this month.

The Post got an advance look inside the eatery, named after Spears' two favorite places, New York and her home state of Louisiana. (She originally called it Pinky after the nickname bestowed on her by ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC, but scrapped that idea after their messy break-up.) In the kitchen, chef Michael Pereselay (of the now closed Mulholland Drive Café in L.A.) created dishes that remind Spears of her childhood. His soul food selections include grilled salmon with Mississippi caviar and sautéed southern greens ($17); southern fried chicken with potato Johnny cakes ($16); and a lobster salad appetizer with fried green tomatoes ($12). The singer was instrumental in creating the restaurant's design and bright color scheme of pinks, reds and oranges. When deciding how to decorate the restaurant, partner Bobby Ochs says he thought of adjectives that describe Spears like "bright, youthful, sexy, vibrant and energetic."

"She was interested in every aspect," says Ochs, who added that she vetoed a zebra print fabric for banquettes and requested candles for a warm lighting scheme.

The restaurant won't open its doors until June 27, but the buzz has already reached a fever pitch. Rudy Giuliani, Gov. Pataki and magician David Copperfield have RSVPed to the opening party - and celebs like J.Lo and Cher have also expressed interest in coming, says Berkowitz, who has been inundated with requests for invites. Ochs insists the restaurant isn't just about Spears, though her celebrity will certainly rake in the crowds and the cash. Ochs' last restaurant, Mulholland Drive Café, was co-owned by Patrick Swayze in the '80s, but didn't survive his post-"Dirty Dancing" career. Nyla "is not a theme restaurant," says Ochs. "It's not a monument to Britney. We are really going to run a sophisticated upscale New York restaurant in an upscale hotel."

More News On BMG Buying Zomba, Britneys Record Label
BMG Music, a division of the German media giant Bertelsmann A.G., agreed today to acquire the rest of the Zomba Music Group, which has fostered superstar music acts like Britney Spears and 'N Sync.

The transaction, valued at $3 billion according to some industry executives, is set to close at the end of this year and would increase BMG's profile in the music industry. Even with recent successes like its J Records label, a joint venture with Clive Davis that released the Grammy-winning debut album of Alicia Keys, BMG, which has a roster of artists that includes Whitney Houston and the Dave Matthews Band, is still dwarfed by its peers.

Last year, the company ranked No. 5 in worldwide record sales, according to company executives, despite a significant showing in the United States.

BMG Music acquired a 25 percent stake in Zomba's music publishing division in 1991 and a 20 percent stake in the record unit in 1996. As part of those deals, Zomba, the largest independent music company, had an option that required Bertelsmann to acquire the company if Zomba exercised it by the end of 2002. Industry executives say it is possible that the music impresario Clive Calder, Zomba's chairman and chief executive, could leave the company after the acquisition is completed.

"While the exercise of this option will undoubtedly be a surprise to many in the music industry, this is a natural culmination of many years of close business ties," Mr. Calder said in a statement.

Thomas Middelhoff, Bertelsmann's chairman and chief executive, added, "We are all very excited about its future prospects, and it will definitely strengthen our music business."

Indeed, BMG Music will add an array of pop stars with Zomba's Jive label. Besides Ms. Spears, it has the Backstreet Boys, whose popularity has waned in recent months as the currency of bands like 'N Sync has risen. The Jive family also includes R. Kelly, the Grammy Award-winning rhythm and blues star who was indicted last week on 21 counts of child pornography; the authorities said he made a sexually explicit videotape with an underage girl. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined $100,000.

Aside from pop and urban music acts, BMG also obtains the Provident Music Group, which will give it a presence in contemporary Christian music, a genre that has grown in popularity over the years. For Zomba, the reported price could not be better. The music industry is in the midst of one of its worst slumps in decades, with album sales down 10 percent last year. Zomba is a private company, but a person close to the company said it had sales last year of $1 billion with profits estimated to be more than $300 million.

"It seems like a rich price given the state of the music business," said Michael Nathanson, a music analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein. "You could buy the EMI Group right now for about that."

In fact, EMI and BMG Music did hold merger talks last year, but the negotiations were scuttled because European regulators threatened to oppose it. Under the deal discussed, a person involved in the talks said, EMI would have acquired BMG Music. Since then, EMI's fortunes have declined, forcing it to cut thousands of jobs and restructure. BMG, for its part, has surged in recent months after its own restructuring.

Soundscan, which tracks market share in the music industry, reported that BMG's share of new albums sold in North America through June 2 was 18 percent, putting it second to the Universal Music Group, a unit of Vivendi Universal, which had 29 percent. The Warner Music Group, with 15 percent, was third.

Analysts said they did not know whether European regulators could scuttle BMG's deal with Zomba, but several said it was sure to be reviewed closely in light of recent concerns about consolidation in the music industry. Almost every part of the music business is being scrutinized by government regulators who fear that the industry's recent merger wave could be hurting consumers as well as recording artists.

Next week, legislators are expected to propose new legislation regarding how many radio stations a company can own as well as the role they play in concert promotion. The Justice Department has been reviewing antitrust concerns regarding record companies, too.

Justin Speaks Out On The Break Up With Britney
...his first-ever solo effort -- and a newfound freedom: bachelorhood. After seven years as the hottest 'N Syncer and three as Britney Spears's boyfriend, Timberlake is now, well, Just Justin. Which suits him just fine. "Right now I want to enjoy life," he declares. Holed up in a studio in Virginia Beach, Va., where he is recording the new album, Timberlake says he wrote the songs to reflect his growing independence. "I'm throwing it out there, seeing what happens," he says. "I'm testing the water, man."

When it comes to diving back into the dating pool, though, Timberlake is still getting his size-11 feet wet. Less than six months after his split from Spears, 20, Timberlake still can't bring himself to utter the words "break up." "It hurts too bad to say it," he says. Actually doing it has been even worse: "You get to a point where you're crying yourself to sleep at night." Given the scrutiny surrounding their relationship, "I feel like I'm in the middle of a soap opera. I honestly know what it's like to have a broken heart now."

And don't listen to the reconciliation rumors. For the time being, at least, the 6'1" Timberlake says he is definitively unattached. Even so, he says, "I love Britney, and I'll always love her."

So what went wrong? Blame the usual suspects: youth, distance and competing careers. "You can't have a real relationship when you see each other only two days a month," says Timberlake's mother, Lynn Harless, 41. Timberlake, who calls the breakup "mutual," agrees, noting that his priorities are shifting. "I just want to focus on my career," he says. "I want to enjoy the simple things. I want to take three days off when I want to, not when it's on my calendar. I want to go run in the park with my sweats on because I can. That's where I'm at right now."
Although still nursing his wounds, he has not allowed a broken heart to get in the way of a good time. Since splitting from Spears, Timberlake has hit the dance floor on both coasts -- sparking romance rumors in April after a particularly close encounter with 'N Sync dancer Jenna Dewan, 21. (For the record: "I haven't been with anyone,"he says. "Not a date, not a kiss.") And during the group's recent tour, Timberlake partied almost nightly with his bandmates and visited the strip-club circuit. A little post-Britney debauchery? You bet. After the strain of maintaining a long-distance relationship, "that's when it's time to take a break and sow your oats," he says. "It's part of being 21."

Those close to him, however, say that beneath the single-guy bravura, Timberlake is still a one-woman man. "Ever since I've known him, he's always had somebody," notes fellow 'N Syncer Lance Bass, 23, who first met a 14-year-old Timberlake in 1995. "That says he doesn't enjoy the chase that much."

Timberlake himself confirms that sentiment. "I never liked dating in the first place," he says. "I believe it's about four to six weeks of somebody acting like somebody they're really not. And you start to see the real them and you're like, 'Whoa! Where did you come from?' " Still, he does have his preferences. "He always said he was a butt man," says his mom with a laugh. Of course, "a good vibe and a big heart" also help, says Timberlake. Adds Bass: "He's a great flirt. He knows how to make girls laugh."

And how to make them swoon. A self-described "hopeless romantic" who lights candles in his hotel rooms wherever he goes and revels in the old-fashioned bathtub he had installed in his Orlando home, Timberlake has displayed a flair for the grand gesture since before he was old enough to drive. His mom recalls an adolescent Justin wooing a girlfriend with a carefully planned picnic. "He bought a bottle of sparkling grape juice, Alfredo pasta and fixed up a basket," says Harless. "He's thoughtful about trying to surprise people."
She should know. "When he was little, I used to say, 'Justin, someday when you get rich and famous, will you buy me a Harley?' " recalls his mom. (She and Justin's father, Randall Timberlake, 42, divorced when Justin was 3.) "It was just a joke between us." Gotcha, Mom: Several Christmases ago, when Timberlake cashed his first big 'N Sync paycheck, he surprised his mother with a jewelry box. Inside? The keys to her very own hog.

Of course, Timberlake reserved his most romantic surprises for Spears. "My head spun," he says of their first meeting as costars on The Mickey Mouse Club in '93. They reunited in '98 when Spears appeared as an opening act for 'N Sync. By the time their relationship was in full swing, Timberlake had traded grape juice for more elaborate overtures. On Valentine's Day, 2000, "we were rehearsing, and one dude comes in and reads a really nice note to Britney from Justin," recalls choreographer and producer Wade Robson, 19, a friend of both stars. "We thought it was going to end there, when all of a sudden a five-piece band comes in and plays Michael Jackson's 'The Lady in My Life.' That's typical Justin...

Label of Britney Sells Out to Bertelsmann
Reuters reported that Zomba Music, the U.S. creative powerhouse that has churned out stars from Britney Spears to 'N Sync, said Tuesday it was selling out to German media group Bertelsmann in a deal worth close to $3 billion.

Cashing in on an agreement that could boost Bertelsmann's BMG music arm into the world's top three music giants, Zomba exercised an option to sell BMG the shares it does not already own in its leading independent business.

In addition to pop princess Britney, Zomba will add acts such as boy band the Backstreet Boys, crooner Michael Bolton and rapper Mystikal as well as a library including blues legend Buddy Guy to BMG's roster. But it comes at a hefty price.

BMG, currently last among the world's five major music groups whose own artists include pop stars Alicia Keys and Pink, already owns 25 percent of Zomba's music publishing division and 20 percent of its record division. Bertelsmann said in its recent annual report Zomba's option was worth some $3 billion.

Britney's Peeping Fear
Britney Spears spent million of dollars on a sprawling home in the Hollywood Hills - but she's nervous about hanging out in her backyard.

The house, on a well-protected cul-de-sac, is located below several homes higher up on the hill which have clear views of her backyard.

A friend reveals, "It creeps her out."

To cope with her peeping-tom paranoia, Spears has consulted landscape designers about planting a row of trees for privacy.

Britney Sings The Blues
A source who attended a recent concert in Los Angeles says Britney at one point turned somewhat melancholy and said she wanted to sing a song that she’s been working on. “It was about a relationship gone bad,” says the source. “It was something along the lines of, ‘You’re calling me, but you run to her. I can’t take it anymore. I’m tired of your s- - -.’ ” But, says the fan, Britney stopped short of completing the word. “Most people didn’t seem to get what she was talking about,” says the source. “Since it wasn’t one of her big hits, a lot of the people in the audience looked at each other and sort of shrugged. But it seemed clear to me that she was talking about Justin.” Spears’ spokeswoman didn’t return calls.

Britney Stole Two Of Our Tunes, Philadelphia Songwriters Claim
Songwriters Michael Cottrill and Larry Wnukowski say they had high hopes for a pop tune they wrote and copyrighted in 1999.

Its title was "What You See Is What You Get."

An agent of teen idol and vocalist Britney Spears told them in 1998 that he would submit it to her producers for possible use on an album.

It could be their "first big break," Cottrill figured.

Instead, Britney broke their hearts. No deal, they were told.

Now Cottrill and Wnukowski are taking Britney to court.

In a lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in Philadelphia, the two songwriters contend that Spears, her publishing company and her recording company pirated their tune by using two versions of it on her platinum "Oops, I Did It Again" album, released about two years ago.

If true, the pirates didn't do much to conceal their alleged thievery.

The title of the song in question on Britney's album is virtually the same as the title of their copyrighted piece.

The only difference is using the letter U in place of the word You. On the album, the song's titled, "What U See Is What U Get."

A second song on the same album, called "Can't Make You Love Me," is "virtually identical to the music" in their copyrighted tune "with respect to the unique rhythm, cords, notes, arrangements of the notes and overall theme," the suit alleges.

Britney's handlers "merely made minor adjustments to some of the lyrics and music in the respective songs in an unsuccessful attempt to `conceal' their pirating of" Cottrill's and Wnukowski's musical talents, the suit asserts.

No one answered the phones yesterday at JIVE Records and Zomba Record Corp., the New York publisher and recording company, respectively, who, along with young Britney, are to be named defendants in the lawsuit...

Britney Brawls With Animal Lovers - Again!
Hoofs! She did it again! Pop tart Britney Spears is sure to infuriate animal lovers with her recent use of a zebra and a peacock in a music video just months after an animal rights organization asked her nicely not to use live animals as props.

On the busy set, the zebra bucked while walking down a ramp, falling on its side, say sources. At one point, says a source, the African Bush animal - a 4-year-old male named Zach - was limping. As for the peacock, he was too stressed-out to shake a single feather.

"There were at least 100 people milling around the set," a spy reports. "Something spooked the zebra, and it went wild. When he fell, lots of extras gasped."

The incident occurred May 15 on a sprawling Beverly Hills property where Spears, 20, shot the video, Boys. The song will be included in the soundtrack for the upcoming Austin Powers movie, Goldmember. And because Spears also has a cameo in the film, Austin Powers star Mike Myers returned the favor and appeared in the video - as did pretty boys Taye Diggs , the model, and Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley . About 60 extras were also summoned.

But jaws, including Spears', dropped when beautiful Zach and a male peacock were brought to the set. "They were all standing in front of the peacock to make him fan out his back feathers," the source said. "But they all were scaring him, and the peacock wouldn't do it. The producers were mad and abandoned the scene."

They're nitwits, blasts an L.A. animal rights activist.

"Peacocks use their feathers only when they're sexually aroused," raves Karen Rosa, a spokesman with the American Humane Society. Rosa investigated the presence of the animals on the set after Confidential alerted her to it. It's customary for movie and video producers to hire Humane Society monitors on sets - but no one called the organization for Spears' video.

Later, producers tried to have the zebra walk up a long flight of steps in front of the mansion. "The zebra slipped, but caught itself before it fell," the spy charges.

"But it favored a leg for a while." After the zebra scene was shot, a ramp was set up for Zach's way down to prevent another slip. Five feet from the end of the ramp, Zach tried to leap off. The witness says he slipped, crashed into a truck parked nearby, and fell to his side, then got up.

"Zebras are much more nervous than horses," Rosa explains.

Which is precisely why, says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals cruelty specialist Amy Rhodes, Spears shouldn't have allowed it. Last year, she sang at the MTV awards with a boa around her neck and a live tiger. PETA wrote her a letter saying that the music could stress out her living props. Another letter will be on its way soon, Rhodes adds.

"I can promise you that whatever was done to have this zebra walk up stairs was cruel," Rhodes says. "The animal did this out of the fear of getting yelled at or even hurt. Britney shouldn't exploit animals to ensure that her fans will still like her."

Britney Spears Toyed With Image At Oakland Show
Britney Spears has represented many things -- the enduring draw of nubile sexuality, the triumph of manufactured stardom, the art of perfect packaging. On her "Dream Within a Dream" tour, which reached the Arena in Oakland Saturday (and San Jose on Sunday), she signifies something unusual for streamlined career: indecision.

"Anything, I mean anything, can happen," she announced at the beginning of her show, before vanishing through a trap door for the first of many costume changes. The statement was absurd in that, barring an act of God, nothing unexpected happens at a highly rehearsed Spears concert. But it also revealed where Spears is positioned at this volatile point in her career -- not even the mistress of premeditation can say with certainty what's going to happen next.

At 20, she's at a career turning point, trying to draw an older audience without alienating her lucrative young fan base. It's a delicate balancing act, and her Oakland concert showed Spears wants to have it both ways. Unsure of how to proceed, she's keeping one foot in teen stardom while the other tests the waters of adult divadom.

Saturday's show was divided between professions of girlish innocence and demonstrations of womanly sensuality. Combined, they might add up to something puerile were it not for Spears' relentless ability to make the juxtaposition so over-the-top enjoyable. Her entrance was grand spectacle, something Cecil B...

Sky News reported that Britney Spears is to appear in the lead role as a racing car driver in her next film. She is all set to strap on her helmet and put the pedal to the metal in a movie about Nascar racing, the US motorsport where saloon cars race round an oval track. The pop star chose the film, her second, from a pile of offers and will start filming in October. An insider told the Sun: "There is no title yet but the film is inspired by one of Britney's favourite movies, Days Of Thunder, which starred Tom Cruise.

"Tom played a hot-tempered Nascar racer - Britney wants to race too."

The news comes after reports that the singer is to make a cameo appearance in the new Austin Powers film Goldmember.
